When mousing over many parts of the game, tooltips appear. One example is in multiplayer, when you mouse over another nation's icon it'll say their name, whether they're in an alliance or independent or a vassal, who they're played by, and tells you to click to open the communications screen. This tooltip is grabbing strings from the localisation file, using PLAYED_BY and PREVIOUSLY_PLAYED_BY, along with INDEPENDENT, and some others. The problem is that I can't find the file referencing these, and I've searched the whole Stellaris folder for each of these strings, unable to find anything. Has anyone found out how to modify these tooltips, or is it just impossible? Thanks for the help.

That's exactly what i'm searching for right now, too. I would like to create a mod, which add's the planet's space to the tooltip at the galaxy maps available planet icon.

I just used a tool called "Agent Ransack" to scan the entire stellaris folder for "PLAYED_BY".
That's a list of file's which contains that string:

stellaris.exe
l_braz_por.yml
l_english.yml
l_french.yml
l_polish.yml
l_german.yml
l_spanish.yml
l_russian.yml

After all my search including search's with other string's, the stellaris.exe is almost everytime existent which makes me believe, that this one is the one we need to modify.
And that may be impossible for us, right?

Btw. im new to this.

I've done absolutely everything I can to try and hide the played by attribute, but no dice. The localisation files don't have any effect :(

So is there any chance of this happening, or should I change focus to multiplayer wish list type stuff to see if Paradox could patch that in?
As i said, i am new to this type of stuff. But i guess, atm it's not possible for us, or we simply just don't know how. As said above the only part in the scanns almost everytime existent, is the .exe and i srsly don't know how to access that one. So changing focus for the moment, might be a good thing.
