You know, I mean those templars hospitalers and teutonic knights.

- Is it possible to make them playable, and if so then how? Maybe someone already made a mod about that?

- Can I change them so that they always use their own unit sprites? I mean, when I get templars or hospitalers via event they look ok, but when I see one of their regiments in their own provinces they have the look of the culture there.

I saw in the country.csv these entries:

Country;main_color;ArmyNationalitySprite;FlagA;FlagB;END

specifically:

HOSP;Gray;frankish;black_regular;silver_regular;X
TEMP;DarkGreen;frankish;red_light;silver_regular;X
TEUT;LightRed;german;blue_light;grey_regular;X

Can I change the ArmyNationalitySprite so that they use the correct unit sprites?

You can only do that by changing them into a feudal title. Then you would have the King of the Templars etc. Same goes for ecclesiastic titles and republics...

AFAIK the troops get the sprite linked to the province culture where they are raised.

Two options, one to make order's province(s) have the orderous culture and another to have orders rely on event troops instead of provincials, which you can make nicely orderly.

Thanks - I think I found a solution to the second question. In the events they use culture definitions for those templars etc. you get. For the templars it is "templar_knight". This however can be used in other files to, for example in a save file. When you edit this in for the province which is controlled by templars, the province info in the game shows "Templar" as culture and the regiment uses the templar sprite (tested it).

I am not familiar with modding CK so much, but I'd guess the entry in the country.csv indicates to which culture a province should change when conquered by a certain country/ruler, so it seems it also would have to be edited from (in the case of the templars):

TEMP;DarkGreen;frankish;red_light;silver_regular;X

to:

TEMP;DarkGreen;templar_knight;red_light;silver_regular;X

Otherwise the game would still convert the culture later to frankish again. I could be wrong though, hard to say without testing.

Province culture is only changes through events, and is not using country.csv at all. I'm not sure if this colum is used as it is now...

Hm, but how does the game determine to which culture it should change in a certain province?

I had a brief look in the conversions events, they have actions like:

action_a = {
(...)
effect = { type = to effect = { type = set_to_realm_culture } } (...)

But somehow the game must "know" what realm_culture is to change it. I thought that would come from the country.csv?

I don't think so - the templars or hospitalers in my game just have both only the province they got via event in the middle east, and the templars changed (without modding) from muslim to frankish, the hospitalers are still muslim.

Edit: x-post

Realm culture is the culture of the King

Is it tied to the character names? I see culture definitions there, but not in the file for the dynasties....but then I don't know if it is possible to edit this or to add more of them with a culture defined as templar etc....I just hope it isn't hard coded.

Characters have cultures defined, not dynasties. You can have a ruler of one culture with children of other dynasties.

Character names are randomly chosen from a list of names defined for the culture

Character names are selected by culture from character_names.csv. Yes, you can add new ones for cultures without names etc.

The province culture changed? What culture is the Grandmaster?

Yep, just checked two saves (v 1.04a), they were muslim/arabic before (1251), and are catholic/frankish (in the 1280ies now). The Grandmasters were in both cases catholic/frankish.

So it seems I could try to change it via those character names, by adding new names with a culture defined for the orders as in the events for the troops the player sometimes gets....sounds good.

Those provinces converted to the culture of the grandmaster (=king in this case).

I am guessing that if you change the culture in country.csv that will affect the culture of the randomly generated grandmaster when the order is released.
