I’ve been playing BT since it launched and have thoroughly enjoyed it, even when the changes forced me to change my play style.

I have resisted loading any of the interesting mods to keep my install pristine and not create issues with HBG updates. Now that it seems HBG is done with this version of the game, and with the recent addition of mod support, is it safe to start down loading mods?

Will a mod eliminate using old vanilla game saves?

I understand there's a 1.9 patch due "soonish", which may fix the currently "slightly broken" HBS mod system*. It's probably worth waiting to find out if that is true...
I've dabbled with mods and iirc a savegame requires BT to be in the same state as when it was created, for it to be loaded and for the game to behave properly. So your old saves would still be usable if you started playing with mods, but only if you were sure to disable/remove them before trying to load your old savegames. Does that make sense? :D

*my understanding from reading this very forum, I've not yet tried the HBS mod system/framework/whatever it is

I’ve enjoyed Modded BATTLETECH gameplay.

But being new to Gaming with Mods, it took me a bit to get everything in proper working order.

My time of trial and error (before I had Modded BATTLETECH up and running) is not a criticism of our Modding Community.

Instead the above maybe should have read, “our Modding Community’s How to Guides made Modding so easy that even I was able to do it... after a few days.” : )
