In CK1 the Christian Names list was a very simple file: "Culture, Gender, First Name" over and over until you had all your choices. To have your own set of first names to be chosen for kids, it looks as though all you had to do was create your own list. But you could not add a culture. You could have your own unique First Name set only by replacing another culture from what I saw on the CK1 boards.

Now, CK1 was released some time ago, so I'm guessing that CK2 will allow us to add new cultures, but I don't know. I also expect I'll be able to figure out how to make my list from looking at the files in the Demo. However, I doubt we can mod the Demo (for fear that it wouldn't be a Demo anymore if that was allowed, very reasonable if so), and so I won't be able to test until release. That would be fine, but I'd like to get some work done before the 14th if possible.

So, can we add a culture? Any comment on what more is required besides the name list? FWIW all I'm looking for is to add unique First Names to be chosen by the AI for grandkids or distant cousins of my culture but not otherwise nameable. I'll just copy and paste anything else the culture requires.

Any information would be appreciated.

Almost certainly, yes. I imagine modding cultures in CK2 will be very similar to modding them in games like Vicky2. You have your culture groups, the cultures that belong to these groups, and perhaps whatever CK2 specific stuff needs to be attached to cultures like preferred names.

Can you add cultures in Vicky2? That's a way of looking into it that should have occurred to me, or Sengoku which seems similar as well.

Yeah, I've seen that occur in some of ParadoxianLP's Lets Plays. What I want though is an entire culture of Billy Bobs and Billie Joes. I like that if my wife's name is Bettylou Thelmaliz that there's a chance the grandkids will have that name too, but I want 100% names which instantly identify to me that these Characters were born of my culture for RP/AAR reasons.

Not sure anyone will see this but didn't want to add another thread until we get a Mod subdirectory. Anyone have a clear idea how the names are handled? I'm not sure what spaces and _'s mean. Obviously one is a break between names and the other is either a way to make double names or possibly a way to equate names (e.g. John=Johan or whatever). I'm not sure which is which. Here's the English Male Name List

" Adam_Adam Alan Albert_Albert Alexander_Alexander Alfred Andrew_Andrew Anselm Arnold_Arnold Arthur_Arthur Aubrey Christopher_Christopher David_David Edmund_Edmund
Edward_Edward Eric_Erik Eustace_Eustace Fulk_Folke Geoffrey George_George Gerald_Gerald Gilbert_Gilbert
Godfrey_Godfrey Gregory_Gregory Guy_Guy Henry_Henry Hugh_Hugh Humphrey Jocelyn John_John Jordan_Jordan Laurence_Laurence Lionel Mark_Marcus Martin_Martin Matthew_Matthew
Maurice Michael_Michael Nicholas_Nicholas Paul_Paul Peter_Peter Philip_Philip
Ralph_Ralph Randolph_Ralph Reginald Richard_Richard Robert_Robert Roger_Roger Simon_Simon Stephen_Stephen Theobald_Theobald Thomas_Thomas Waleran Walter_Walter
William_William"

If a space separates names, then it looks like you cannot have double names (except maybe "BillyBob"?) . There's an awful lot of "Henry_Henry" etc here, does that mean more often and the ones which appear only once happen less often?

Any help (or educated guesses) would be appreciated.

The "Henry_Henry" names are actually two things:

The first part is the name
The second part "_Henry" is a handle to the name.

If you specify it in another culture, for example Swedish, you could add:
"Henrik_Henry", where Henrik it the name and "_Henry" is the handle.

If you then have someone called "Henry" ingame, which then converts to Swedish culture, he will also change his name to "Henrik" (and vice versa, of course)

That means that Henry = Henry. Let me explain:

In different langauges, the same person is called differently. Think of the Holy Roman Emperors. A lot of them were called Heinrich. That's a German name. But in the UK and America they are called Henry.

The example with the english names is kind of a bad one. In the German culture thingy you will find: Heinrich_Henry. This is a way of telling the game that Heinrich = Henry. (Just like Henry = Henry). It is used for switching names if a ruler converts to another culture. (If a German character named Heinrich becomes English, his name will change to Henry.) It's also used for numbering monarchs. If there have been 8 German Heinrichs as HRE, and an Englishman named Henry succeeds them, the new emperor will not be called Henry I, but Henry IX.
