Hello all,

I am new to this forum but I’ve played many Paradox games including HoI3 with over 1000 hours. I have read through every dev diary and watched all WWW for HoI4 and I am really loving the way the game is turning out with the new focus on equipment and production.

One thing though that I find really disappointing – and I think many of you on this forum agree with me – is the removal of supplies and fuel from the game and the fact that fuel is used instead to produce equipment.

I am not a modder by any stretch but I have been mulling over the game mechanics and I’ve come up with this idea to simulate fuel and supplies usage for ground units.

Basically what this mod would do is:

1. Remove all fuel cost from equipment production.

2. Reduce by half the rate of attrition on most types of land equipment (since equipment attrition would no longer represent munitions/fuel usage)

3. Rename the “fuel” strategic resource to “oil” since fuel will now be a type of equipment

4. Add two new equipment types, named “ supplies/munitions” and “fuel“ respectively. Those two equipment types suffer a very high rate of attrition, so you need to replace them all the time. Due to the way attrition works in game you would use a lot more fuel/supply when fighting or training or in difficult terrain.

5. Supplies could be produced by your military factories at a small resource cost (maybe a little metal) while fuel would be “refined” also by your military factories at a high cost of “oil” strategic resource.

6. All types of brigade template now use a certain amount of “fuel” and “supplies” equipment depending on their type. When the amount of fuel/supplies is insufficient, they will perform much worse in combat due to existing game mechanics.

So here goes, I think this would go a long way towards adding fuel/supplies to the game. Unfortunately I don't think this would work for naval and air units so we would need to come up with a separate system for these (maybe a strategic modifier reducing your oil by a preset amount once you have X number of planes/ships?).

As I said I am not a modder, but I would be willing to give it a try once the game comes out if you think this is a good idea.
Also I apologize if someone has already proposed something like this, I was not able to find it on the forums.

Cheers

So, not only do we need different attrition rates for different equipment types, but we also need different consequences (maluses) for being short of different equipment types, not to mention, shudder, a lack of certain equipment types need to effect different division types differently. For example, Tanks need to attrition at a different rate from fuel while training. Being short of fuel has a different impact (different maluses) on a division than being short of tanks. Finally, being short of fuel effects an armored division different than an infantry division. I hope, but doubt, that all that would be the case. If it did, it would end up being a very complicated system.

It wont be as good as a proper fuel system but would be better than having fuel used to produce tanks and none used operating them. The problem is that attrition only roughly equates to fuel use. And the effect of fuel shortages wont be very well simulated.

What Tommylotto said - that 'graveyard' has actually had an active conversation going since it was launched, including something along the lines of what you're suggesting, but that doesn't mean suggesting it again is a bad thing :). It's going to depend a lot on how easy it is to have different rates of attrition for different activities for different equipment for different battalion types (varying by weather and supply status). There are definitely a few of us that are thinking about this kind of thing, and it's good to have another brain in the mix, but I suspect this thread will be closed and the discussion have to be moved to the oil and logistics thread. Don't feel bad if that happens - the idea behind that thread was so that the forums didn't fill up with a bunch of posts like this.
