It's probably a stupid idea that's been done before...

but would it possible to change the research dates of technology while maintaining some of the historicity of the tech trees?
And could that be achieved by increasing the experience points needed to research the technology.

example:

tech 1, unmodded:
date: 1939:
levels: 7 7 7 7 14

tech 1, modded
date: 1936 (i.e. N/A)
levels: 21 21 21 21 42

so in essence there'd never be a research penalty due to year of research, but the slower research would come from increased difficulty (since techteams wouldn't be improved).

It's not something I can mod myself though. I just thought to share this one in case it's a novel and useable idea.

Not a bad idea, although how would this differ if the inceased time meant the tech wasnt available till approximately the same time anyway?

But then it will take forever to research techs in late game since the increased difficulty will make it take longer time for any given tech team to research it. If i understand your suggestion correct

heh, it was just an idea I had, don't know if it would work though.
The idea was to get rid of the date-of-optimal-research thingy without making it so that you can have late-game infantry before the war even starts.

It was mainly an attempt at getting rid of some oddities (like germany having to research motorised infantry at the start of the GC) without removing the increasing difficulty of researching more advanced techs.

the result would probably more or less the same as in vanilla though.

You can modify the penalties for this research dates stuff its in hoi2\db\misc.txt simply change the values in following line:

# Pre-Historical Date Mod (value * days prior to historical date. Lower limit for the total is -0.9. )
-0.0015
