The official VIET->EUIV Converter religious icons status list

Ok, as I said I'd do, here is a list of the multiple (56!) religions introduced by the converter and their current status in terms of religious icons. This should provide a good resource for resident icon creator extraordinaire AnaxXiphos as well as myself, plus everyone is fully welcome to make recommendations on what kind of symbol each religion should have. Please bare in mind that many of these heresies and secs never had any specific iconography associated to them, so I am completely ok with having symbols that aren't historically associated with the faith, so long as it makes at least abit of sense and nothing better exists, so for example nothing stupid like a cross from a muslim sect, but a generic crescent not associated with any faith that's different from all the other crescents is fair game.

Cathar

Done!

Fraticelli

Not done
Suggestion: I considered a simple wooden cross design, very simple to represent their poverty traits.

Waldensian

Not done
Suggestion: According the google search this symbol tends to appear alot:

WWAQg0m.jpg

Lollard

Not done
Suggestion: Probably an anglican cross

Bogomilist

Not done
Suggestion: Not much, maybe something that either says orthodox, gnostic or bulgarian

Monothelite

Not done
Suggestion: Since it was more of an academic debate with the orthodox, probably a different design of the orthodox cross

Iconoclast

Not done
Suggestion: Yeah... the icon for the guys who smash icons... An hammer? :p

Paulician

Not done
Suggestion: Weren't they abit gnostic? I dunno...

Bosnian

Not done
Suggestion: Doesn't make the most sense, but my first idea was the bosnian lily... If nobody else can think of anything...

Miaphysite

Done

Monophysite

Not done
Suggestion: Technically the same as miaphysite, but since the coptic cross can either have a blue or redish outline and miaphysite uses the blue one, coptic/monophysite could use the red one.

Syriac

Not done
Suggestion: Not sure, but maybe something from the church's emblem?

wLikC1z.jpg

Maybe that snake scepter? :p

Maronite

Not done
Suggestion: A maronite cross...

Not done
Suggestion: No idea, probably just a different crescent

Psaw. Show me a sleight_of_hands_events.txt or ordepnm_events.txt in this mod...

My god that was a big post xD
Heresy overload :p

And by the way, I have a superskierpat.csv or two in there, do I get a weak claim?

We are forgetting a very important detail.

I am also officially proclaiming OrdepNM a member of the VIET team. As he has admirably worked as VIET’s de facto converter for the past couple of months, and is continuing to make interesting and meaningful changes and improvements to it, I think it’s proper that he get official recognition for work that I am not doing. In CKII terms this is like me giving OrdepNM a kingdom within my de jure empire. Very dangerous indeed. Anyhow, yay OrdepNM.

Of course, this now means that technically in the unusual and obviously not suspicious case that I am incapacitated, OrdepNM is by default the most senior member of the VIET team. :p

It's been decided. :D

I'm forming a faction to press Sleight of Hands claim to the throne, who's with me?

REBELS! *rattles saber*

My excellent suggestions:

Fraticellis - use the cross from gfx\flags\d_fraticelli.tga

Lollards - use the square cross used on Lollard pits? View attachment 96344

The Bogomils in Bulgary used "Celtic" crosses, like this: View attachment 96345

Monothelist: Whatever that thing on d_monothelite.tga is

Iconoclast: d_iconoclast.tga (black Orthie cross)

Paulician were basically Gnostics. Maybe something like this? View attachment 96346 Perhaps add the slanted extra bar most Orthie crosses have though.

Bosnian: see above with Bogomils. Why cybr gives the Bosnian Bogomils their own church... I'll never know.

Monophysite: either your idea or just d_monophysite.tga

Random thoughts:

While iconoclasts hated icons, they had no problems with simple, basic crosses. The Wikipedia page on Byzantine Iconoclasm shows the only remaining example of an Iconoclast cross, that could be a basis for inspiration.

Doing a bit of internet searching, it seems the bogomilists used a crescent pointing upwards with a star above that as their symbol. This icon compilation for CK2 also uses it.

For Zurvanites, it's important to consider that their God was literally 'Time'. An hourglass would make for an appropriate symbol in that regard.

The Manichaean should probably get the 'default' Gnostic cross; the Denawari as an offshoot maybe a variation of it (dunno, rotate it 45 degrees or something).

For the Sabians; one of the groups under that name considered Hermes Trismegistus their prophet. Maybe that's an interesting direction for research.

Pfff, that's only true if you decided to snub me and not use my Maasai shield icon... Which, if true, means I'm going to be forced to preemptively join the rapidly coalescing faction against your tyrannical (theoretical) rule...

More seriously though, that's quite a list... I'm not entirely sure I'll take a crack at anything just yet, but since I do plan on revisiting the Gnostic religious icon (probably just minor tweaks) I might be able to put together something shiny for the Gnostic types. I actually have a more EU4 type Gnostic icon made already as part of my unused Gnostic concepts, so I'd just need to make a bigger version.

I really wish Paradox would stop with all of these patches. Things are fine as they are! Just make sure the game doesn't crash and leave the rest to the modders since they seem to know what the players want.

No.
And thats without mentioning that patches often add new modding cappabilities.

Oopps! I simply copy/pasted "Paradox done!" under all the reformed faiths and completely forgot east pagan is not vanilla. I'll have it fixed when I update the list :)

That's fine, you do whatever you want. One thing you might consider doing is giving me a heads up if you decide to do some of those icons, just to make sure I'm not making the same icons myself. But if you don't, it should be fine, what are the odds we choose the same religion out of that big list?

Send the assassins

I see a shaddy guy near my house and it's war.

Gosh, succession season is tough.

So every person should play at the same skill level, or else don't play at all? I understand about the modding and crash fixes and such, but why does Paradox feel it is necessary to make things twice as hard for everyone, including those who already have a hard time playing the game?

I'm sorry you feel like this but this isnt the place for this discussion.

Gnostic cross thingy, suitable for EU4 shenanigans:

(Thingy, of course, being the technical term.)

Great :) I already had a gnostic icon I slapdashed in a minute because I didnt want to waste more time with icons after the ibadi and druze ones, but this looks much better. I dunno wich religion will get it because the gnostic cross fits alot of them, probably the ones who proves harder to find something suitable for.

Hey OrderNP. I friend of mine helped did a quick conversion of my current West African Pagan game in CK2. Done in the year 1055, this is the result.

Somehow Songhay ended up getting Eastern tech despite not holding Marrakesh, Tunis, or a reformed pagan. Is that planned for where it is at? (Mali I imagine would have it differently when I finish the game as a Mande ruler... hopefully) Must of the other techs are standard, Muslims have muslim tech, Europe is split into Eastern and Western tech, and nomad states like Khzaria have nomad tech.

So far this converter is really pleasing me! Thanks so much for the work you put in this. :D

Eastern? No, thats not WAD, they should only scale between sub saharan and ottoman depending on your situation. Im guessing you probably fell within a gap of the west african system, ie, a situation I didnt antecipate and as such didnt code for. I also noticed a bug that gave an easy ottoman tech in west africa shortly before release, I wonder if fixing that might have accidentaly opened a hole.

Really theres alot of variables here. Could I ask you for the save game (CK2) so I can see what's causing it myself? Dont forget to mention what mods youre using.

That's fine, you do whatever you want. One thing you might consider doing is giving me a heads up if you decide to do some of those icons, just to make sure I'm not making the same icons myself. But if you don't, it should be fine, what are the odds we choose the same religion out of that big list?

Yeah, I should be able to give you a heads up if I work on anything specifically for the converter. In non-converter icon news, besides the Gnostic icon, I'm planning on revisiting the Nestorian icon I did for VIET, and I hear cyber is planning on integrating a mod which splits the Miaphysites into Coptic and Armenian, which means I'll probably be doing an Armenian cross as well. All of which is a long way of saying that it's likely I'll be doing some various crosses in the near future. Not sure any of the designs will be suitable for something in the converter, but we'll see.
