Playing with PB+VIET, as one the Russian Prince of Kiev. I managed to unite the principalities but how do I declare war on the northern pagan tribes ? The tooltip say I can't declare holy war on pagans.

Unless it was changed in the mod it's a vanilla thing. As orthodox you cannot declare holy war on pagans while you have any provinces that are still pagan. Convert those first. Otherwise I don't know.

Anyways about the converter, I haven't really gotten around to finishing a VIET game yet so I haven't done anything over but what are the religion effects from Miaphysite and Reformed East African when converted to EUIV? I've yet to think on how these new "religions" could effect balance.

Which one of viet modules has zoorastrism expanded in it? :)

Immersion.

Have you thought about integrating ZAP Mod? Would add alot of immersion for Persians/Zoroastrians

I have, but decided not to. While I like the idea of Persians who look more like Persians, I don't like the roundabout method with which it is done - i.e. having a separate culture. Might cause some unintended consequences, in my opinion.

As Sainturl said the main requirement in VIET for holy wars on pagans is that you can't have any pagan provinces yourself, so convert first or find other ways to conquer.

Some issues I ran into towards the start of my first 1.4.1 game, as a Jewish Khazaria (starting off as the default king):

First, for some reason I couldn't swear fealty to either of the nearby empires, the option wasn't even available (no button on the emperor's diplomacy screen). This persisted even when I used the console to swap both my culture and religion to match his, in order to see if that was a requirement in VIET.

Second, the Maygars didn't loose all their land when Hungary was formed:

Third, unless it is celebrated within what the game would consider to be de jure Israel, Passover is eight days long, not seven.

Also, on another note, I disabled the prayers from the Jewish music pack. They made me feel uncomfortable, and, in my opinion, don't really work (and aren't really appropriate) as background music.

I don't think kings can swear fealty to emperors in vanilla, so that wouldn't be a VIET thing. If it is happening in VIET for some reason when it shouldn't be, I don't really know why it would be doing that then unfortunately.

Second, the Maygars didn't loose all their land when Hungary was formed:

Ah, whoops. Looks like I forgot to update the Magyar event for the new de jure setup in Russia.

Third, unless it is celebrated within what the game would consider to be de jure Israel, Passover is eight days long, not seven.

You're talking about the localization incorrectly saying it is seven days, right? (The in-game event chain is longer than a week or two for gameplay reasons.)

Also, on another note, I disabled the prayers from the Jewish music pack. They made me feel uncomfortable, and, in my opinion, don't really work (and aren't really appropriate) as background music.

I admit I don't really like the selection I have for the Jewish music pack either, but I couldn't really find any good, legally free Jewish music online so I took whatever stuff I could find. I might try a second Jewish music pack and try to find a better selection, but given how difficult it was for me to find good legally free stuff the first time I'm uncertain whether I'll be able to find anything the second time.

Doing a bit of testing in vanilla, it appears that a king can only swear fealty to his de jure emperor, so that was the issue.

And yeah, I was talking about the localization saying seven days, not eight. (Both in the event text, and the transliterated Hebrew title.) Though, if the event does need to be longer than 7-8 days, why not toss in the counting of the Omer, and Shavuot as well?

I wish you luck with the music thing.

Edit:
Any chance you might put out a quick patch for the Maygar thing, if I may ask?

Not sure if it's a vanilla or VIET bug, but while playing as ERE emperor, after I conquered all the de jure trebizond provinces, an even started popping up every few days that trebizond kingdom is part of the empire. It just keep giving me the same message over and over again.

So you couldnt find 100% free jewish music? Jee, imagine that shocker... :p

Now seyously, I should take a look at that and see whats so wrong with your selection, which I wouldnt know as I play pdox games muted. Tbh its quite impossible to separate prayer and scripture from song in traditional jewish culture, but not everything is drony "Ave Maria" type songs. I know at least a few who would fit quite well in the background, and it shouldnt be too hard to find renditions in creative commons. I'll take a listen at what you have, see if it can be improved and get back to you on that.

A PSA about the VIET -> EUIV Converter

Yesterday a fan sent me a PB+VIET save game, telling me that while he seemed to be able to convert his game to EUIV just fine, when trying to run EUIV with the converter's output, the game would then refuse to load it and would just display the vanilla version of the game. While I was hoping this was a one-off weirdness, some testing turned out similar results which I simply couldnt expain, which then lead me into a mad hunt, and several PM to cybrxkhan that can be summed up as "NEED SAVE FILES NAO!!!"... Now I'm happy to say I found the issue plaguing this particular save and some others. First the bad news: It's almost certainly hardcoded, but the good news is that the workaround is particularly easy.

The problem here appears to be the name of the "mod" created by the converter. In the case, EUIV would not, for whatever reason, load a mod called "Poland-Lithuania1443_01_05", but if I switched over to Iceland and converted, the new mod "Iceland1443_01_05" works like a charm. I also got the previous converter mod to work by switching its name to "MYCK2CONVERT". Ence, if you get this issue, you have 2 options:

1: reload your save and select another character, convert your game and see if it works now.

2: change the name of your unuseable eu4 export. For this you'll need to change the name of the folder, as well as the name of the .mod file and the references to the previous name in the first 3 lines of the mod file.

I have no darn clue what cause EUIV to say "nope, not loading that" to certain mod names, and I have even less belief that theres anything I can do about it, so do bear those workarounds in mind (I'll also add them to a readme, once I actually make on :p ) Hopefully its not very widespread and you wont ever run into it, but just in case...

Omer and Shavuot would probably not be needed. Anyhow, if I made the Passover event chain only last a week you'll be getting a bunch of event spam as I try to fit all the events within a week, so I have to make it longer than a week as it's better in terms of immersion (since players are most likely running the game on highest speed, they won't notice it that much anyways); a number of vanilla event chains (both decision related and generic flavor events) are structured similarly as well, I believe.

Do I have to replace the VIET music folder from the vanila VIET mod pack if I wanna use PB modules?

It's not necessary. You can use the same VIET music folder for anything, really, you don't even need to use it with VIET.

Not sure if it's a vanilla or VIET bug, but while playing as ERE emperor, after I conquered all the de jure trebizond provinces, an even started popping up every few days that trebizond kingdom is part of the empire. It just keep giving me the same message over and over again.

Hmm. Looks like my fix in 1.4.1 only fixed it popping up for people who didn't need to reconquer it in the first place. I'll have that fixed for 1.4.1.

In the meanwhile, you can try the fix in the link below. It was made for 1.4.0 but should work for 1.4.1.

It's very interesting indeed, though credits should go to Zaldax, he made the event chain and decided to donate it to VIET.

Is it possible to deselect Norse and Celtic portraits without getting black squares?

If you don't have all the portrait DLCs you should apply the portrait fix, it's in the "customization options" folder.

Perhaps I should reword it - I didn't have problems finding 100% legally free Jewish music. I did have problems finding 100% legally free Jewish music that would feel appropriate for the time period. Actually I found a lot of Klezmer, but anyhow a lot of the stuff I found, for instance, used relatively modern instrumentation - brass bands and pianos, for instance - that would feel out of place while playing CKII, for instance. I'm not too iffy on using modern tunes per se (one of th emusic packs is classical Spanish guitar music, which is definitely not in CKII's timeframe), but if the instrumentation feels too modern then the immersion is lost in my opinion. For example I was going to try to find an appropriate version of Hava Nagila, because that's funny, but all the versions I found had some element of modern instrumentation - whether it used a piano, a brass band, modern drumming, or it felt too jazzy or rock-like, etc.

So yeah that's why I resorted to using a few prayer stuff. Anyhow if you find any good links feel free to show me, I actually really like Jewish music but unfortunately the stuff I wanted to use in the Jewish music pack is not legally free, so yeah.

:p

But I get what you're saying. For reference, how out of place with all the other music packs would a song without instruments, say just a woman singing, be?

That's fine.

I mean I got a "music" pack that's nothing but nature sounds, so that'd still be pretty good in comparison. :D

Kay, I listened to the pack, the jewish fiddle is cute, the rest is errr, the shofar is wtf... It should be noted that when I mean "jewish prayer" in this context, I mean prayers that are actually meant to be sung, or piyyut. Those are the ones you should look for. I'll get back to you with a few.

Here’s the first post-1.4.0 test game, ran up to 1493. It’s okay balance-wise; some of the results were a little WTF but nothing too unusual for VIET I guess.

Notes and interesting things:
  • Golden Horde went Sunni, while the Ilkhanate went Nestorian. Basically most of the Middle East is ruled by Christians (Mecca in fact is ruled by a Chaldean Nestorian Mongol, while the kingdom of Oman is ruled by the Nestorian descendants of the Seljuks) while Russia is mostly Islamified, with two Sunni Russian kingdoms, Vladimir and Kiev (the remnants of the Rurikids, for instance, are Sunni).
  • A number of Republics popped up during gameplay, including the Kingdom of Sicily, Gascogne, Beja (technically a direct successor of the now feudal Somalia), and Achaia (in the ERE - they’re somehow independent)
  • West Africa is unified under the pagan Wolof/Serer
  • Iberia went mostly the way of the Muslims for the majority of the game, with them controlling most of the kingdom titles, although Aragon managed to survive; France and a post-Crusade Andalusia show a slow Christian comeback, though
  • Pisa dominates most of Italy
  • Denmark somehow ended up getting the kingdoms of Lithuania and Hungary
  • Only major pagan kingdom is the Finnish Eryza/Novgorod, which is still pagan
  • There was a Muslim enclave in Ireland during the 1100s and 1200s for some reason, but that obviously has been swallowed up by the rather powerful Kingdom of Ireland
  • The “Republic” of Hormuz went full Zoroastrian. Dunno how they managed to survive for centuries like that.

Hey, Cybr, I want to bring your attention to something I see in every VIET game at the TOG start date. The big, brown blob of doom:

EzsnOdz.jpg

This happens in every game for me. For whatever reason, the Magyars don't lost their old lands like they do in vanilla. I know, I know. It shouldn't matter in this game as I am playing as Sweden, but the Jewish concubines I "liberated" from Khazar keep crying because their families are stuck between the three biggest armies in the world. It is interrupting planning for the next raid. How exactly is a proper Northman supposed to carry out his goal of having a Jewish, Sayyid, Born in the Purple member of his dynasty recreate Israel without careful raid planning?

dc1Zw7t.jpg

Ignore Thessalonika in the ledger. Random Frankish landless adventurer whose troops didn't disband after the war for whatever reason, but probably will on reloading the game.

Anyway, this happens in every game I play with VIET. It makes playing in that region as one of the underdogs that much more precarious.
