With regard to balancing Chinese Imperial for religions, why not make not having the gov itself as a condition for GHWs?

It'd do effectively nothing to prevent CI rulers from blobbing through GHWs, seeing as they still would be able to join a GHW called by someone else (that wouldn't necessarily be a (sub-)vassal of a CI ruler, meaning checking for not having any CI liege would be insufficient) on the attacking side, likely would have sufficient forces to easily become the main contributor, and thus would get all the land if the GHW was won (since non-Crusade GHWs give all land to the most contributing attacker), which is contrary to the intended design of having CI rulers generally lack CBs for taking land that's not Chinese and not being able to take advantage of religious CBs.

Any option that allowed a religion with GHWs access to the CI government would also result in other things coming into contact with CI that currently aren't concerns; Autocephalous or Hierocratic religions have excommunications and claim requests (which undermine the "Can't imprison/revoke without a valid reason" part of the government), a Temporal head (that's not barred from the government) invalidates the currently true "If CI then not a rel head" assumption, and a completely different religion would mean that anything that checks for that religion (or even religion group) and doesn't check for a specific government or that checks for CI and doesn't check religion suddenly needs to be checked for possible issues arising from that combination (and either adjusted or disabled if that combination is present and is an issue). This means that even if we ignored the ability to get around the GHW restriction, changed up how you join GHWs (which means trying to partially replicate the logic of the hardcoded "Request to join war" interaction in script and disabling normal joining for that CB, at the very least), or changed what happens if the most contributing attacker is CI to avoid the blobbing issue there might be (are, in some cases) other reasons not to give certain religions (or reformations) access to CI.

Dev diary 51 - Muist flavour, a new Buddhist pilgrimage, and Grand Chancellors

It is time to go over some additional flavour that has been added in Korea, as well as one thing that's a bit more widely available.

Muist flavour:

In addition to access to the Hwarang society (if it exists) and the Chuseok harvest festival Muist characters have been given two new decisions and a decent chunk of events related to them: The decision to search for a Court Mu and (if you have a Court Mu) the decision to have your Court Mu perform a Gut.

ck2_17.png

The former decision is somewhat similar to the "Recruit Court Physician" decision in that you pay a small amount of money and get a possible candidate a while later, while the latter deals with your Court Mu preparing and holding a Gut, which either will be a Dodang-gut meant to bring well-being and prosperity or a Ssitgim-gut meant to pacify the spirits of the deceased. Depending on your Court Mu (and partially on your character) and whether you've got supernatural events enabled, a number of different things can happen here.

Pilgrimage to Bulguksa and Seokguram:

Koreanic Buddhists (that don't have their capital in Gyeongju) have been given the ability to go on a pilgrimage to Bulguksa and Seokguram.

ck2_18.png

While it is possible you'll get the normal Buddhist flavour events on arrival there is also a decent number of unique events that can happen on this pilgrimage, one of which is quite beneficial but also quite rare...

Grand Chancellors:

Assuming Conclave is active, duke- and king-tier Confucian Bureaucracy vassals of independent king- or emperor-tier Confucian Bureaucracy and Chinese Imperial lieges that are not of their dynasty have been given the ability to forge a new bloodline if they can obtain sufficient support from their liege's councillors (using a targeted decision costing prestige (and possibly further things being requested))... or if they lead a Takeover or Claimant faction to victory in a civil war and their new liege isn't from their dynasty. Their liege is also forced to give their council one more power unless that would result in Full Council Authority (i.e. forced Elective).

This mechanic also covers the military leaders in Goryeo, such as Yi Uimin, who get such bloodlines at the appropriate times (and also hold most counties in the Korean Peninsula, meaning they've got a pretty strong start).

ck2_19.png

Assuming they have the Confucian Bureaucracy government, that their liege is an independent king- or emperor-tier Confucian Bureaucracy or Chinese Imperial ruler not from their dynasty, and that they are not blocked due to being too young, incapable, women, or the like, members of these bloodlines have quite a few things going for them:

- If not on the council, they can demand that any council member (whose spot they could fill) that's not their liege's heir, the Spymaster, a Court chaplain with a different religion, their own rel head, or a Permanent Regent (since it's possible for a Shogun to have the Confucian Bureaucracy government) gives them their spot. The target can accept, try to ask for something in return, spend prestige to deflect the request, or resign outright and hope that their liege will give their spot to someone completely different.

- If on the council, they can pressure anyone that's not the current heir or a Permanent Regent to adopt their current voting pattern (and to keep it for a minimum of five years). Again, the target has a number of options to deal with the request.

- They can be on the council regardless of their stats, meaning the Chinese Imperial and Confucian Bureaucracy stat requirements don't get in their way (meaning that if you are their liege you might not want to murder them and have a low-stat heir take over).

- They cannot be fired from the council except through events (or something that renders them incapable of being a councillor, e.g. being captured in battle).

- In AI hands, they are unlikely to be Loyalists, and reasonably likely to be Malcontents.

Unlike Permanent Regents, these people are permitted to join factions if the council is discontent (or isn't allowed to vote on wars), potentially including factions for any claim they might have on their liege, and their liege is not forced into a regency (and can thus potentially try to arrest them if they've got a reason). They also lack special powers such as setting up a marriage for their liege or getting their liege to give them a title. It is possible some such things will be added at some point in the future, but the intention is for this to not be entirely similar to that system and anything further that might be added could therefore be fairly different.

As the liege of someone from one of these bloodlines (that isn't from your dynasty) you might want to ensure that they like you... or make sure you wipe the whole dynasty out so that it stops being a problem.

That would be all for today. The next dev diary will likely cover assorted things relevant to (Jurchen) Jin, their puppets, and a few related wars... and may or may not end up containing some patch notes too.

Is it possible for you guys to release a Self-improvement doctrine standalone mod?

Do other doctrines affect what trait is desirable or not for use of Self-improvement doctrine?

No. This is consistent with how Random World not-Buddhists (i.e. the custom religion using the buddhist tag) work with regards to those ambitions and with various traits being regarded as good/bad globally even when that is weird. Changing it would not be straightforward, seeing as we'd need to figure out another setup and then create new events (and possibly ambitions) to handle anything that's not simply disabling some of the relevant ambitions, so it is definitely outside the scope of the 13.0.0 update and its bugfix patch(es).

Is it possible for you guys to release a Self-improvement doctrine standalone mod?

If I remember correctly what was involved in adding that Doctrine, it should be fairly easy to release it independent of Tianxia, and I'll try to remember to check that once 13.0.0 is out. Of course, since it would mess with a couple of vanilla files such a mod would be incompatible with any other mod that has messed with those files without a compatibility patch, so it wouldn't be a standalone mod that could be run alongside any other mod right away.

Dev diary 52 - A Clash of Dragons

It is time to get the last non-patch note dev diary prior to 13.0.0 out of the way. As previously mentioned, it is about the bookmark we've added during the Jin-Song War, as well as some things related to this war and the things leading up to it.

ck2_1.png

It's obviously neither a clash of kings nor a dance of dragons.

The last days of Liao:

Though rather irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, before (Jurchen) Jin and Song clashed with Liao a Liao official by the name of Gao Yongchang had the "brilliant" idea to proclaim himself the emperor of Yuan (no, not that one). His ill-fated rebellion ended with his realm being conquered by (Jurchen) Jin and his death around the same time (the exact date is unclear). It is very unlikely things will go much better in Tianxia (barring console usage or anything similar), particularly as he doesn't have any great marriage prospects, but he's playable if you want to give it a try.

ck2_2.png

Though his stats aren't fixed, in this particular instance he started with about a sixth of the troops of (Jurchen) Jin. Good luck, have fun.

Several years after this series of events, the Alliance Conducted at Sea between (Jurchen) Jin and Song was negotiated, and the two of them attacked Liao (or, in the game, Liao's little tributary). Though the nomadic Liao will survive in Tianxia (since neither attacker is meant to take their vanilla land), chances are the war in question will still be a resounding victory for the allies, and (Jurchen) Jin will vassalize the land held by the tributary. Of course, there was a deal regarding the Sixteen Prefectures with Song that they might expect to remain unaltered...

When the war ends with a victory for the attackers, Song will get an event giving them three options: Ask for the Sixteen Prefectures in exchange for an NAP, ask for a straight up NAP, or just ignore both options (and perhaps consider a war declaration, if you think that's wise). If the ruler of Song is Huizong and he is controlled by the AI, he will always pick the first option, with anyone else picking an answer based on traits, giving (Jurchen) Jin the opportunity to respond.

ck2_4.png

Is this actually a reasonable demand for him to make?

If (Jurchen) Jin is ruled by Taizong and AI-controlled, they'll pick the middle option, while traits otherwise will come into play. Some further events will potentially fire in this case (you'll have to find out just what they say on your own), but the historical rulers will stick to the (roughly; the historical outcome was "Hand over some prefectures... and then have a war break out shortly thereafter anyway", which would be rather messy to try to handle) historical script, and war will be declared if both stick to it.

(Jurchen) Jin will also get to respond to the straight up NAP offer, which they're more likely to accept, and will be notified if Song decided to pick the third option.

Wars between (Jurchen) Jin and Song:

There are two historical wars between (Jurchen) Jin and Song that are relevant at this point (there are some others later on that have not been added at this time): One that starts in 1125 and one that starts in 1126.

The possible outcomes are as follows for the first war:

- If (Jurchen) Jin wins, they take all territory in China that's north/east of the Yellow River (unlanding any dynasty members of the emperor) and Song becomes a tributary of (Jurchen) Jin.

- If the war ends in a white peace, Song becomes a tributary of (Jurchen) Jin. This is roughly how the war ended historically (there were some minor border adjustments, but it's much cleaner to have just the tributary).

- If Song wins, they take all territory held by (Jurchen) Jin in the China region (unlanding any dynasty members of the emperor).

The second war is a bit messier.

If you start prior to the fall of Bianjing (1127.1.9), the outcomes are as follows:

- If (Jurchen) Jin wins, they take all territory in China that's north of the Yangtze (unlanding any dynasty members of the emperor) and Song becomes a tributary of (Jurchen) Jin. This is roughly what they wanted when they made their first peace offer.

- If the war ends in a white peace, Song becomes a tributary of (Jurchen) Jin and the border is moved to the Yellow River (unlanding relatives on both sides as necessary).

- If Song wins, they take all territory held by (Jurchen) Jin in the China region (unlanding any dynasty members of the emperor).

If you start after the fall of Bianjing, the outcomes are as follows:

- If (Jurchen) Jin wins, they take all territory in China that's north of the Yangtze (unlanding any dynasty members of the emperor) and Song becomes a tributary of (Jurchen) Jin. This is roughly what they wanted when they made their first peace offer.

- If the war ends in a white peace, Song becomes a tributary of (Jurchen) Jin and the border is moved to the Huai River (unlanding Song imperial relatives as necessary). This is the historical outcome.

- If Song wins, they take all territory held by (Jurchen) Jin in the China region (unlanding any dynasty members of the emperor).

Should either (Jurchen) Jin puppet emperor -- Zhang Bangchang of (Da) Chu or Liu Yu of (Da) Qi -- be around as puppets, any land that would have been taken by the Jurchen is instead given to the relevant puppet, while a Song victory also would destroy the puppet empire and put its lands under Song.

Puppets and related mechanics:

The (Jurchen) Jin puppets are around between the relevant historical dates and start as a special tributary of their overlord.

ck2_5.png

Zhang Bangchang is perhaps not the real Emperor of China despite possessing the former Song capital...

There are two special decisions relevant to the puppets, one for them and one for their overlord, inspired by how the two puppet regimes ended historically.

The puppet can choose to renounce their empire and become a vassal of China. This gives their former overlord claims on all of their titles and makes their former overlord consider them a traitor. This decision cannot be taken if Song currently is winning the war by 25 % or more, seeing as they'll have little reason to accept.

ck2_7.png

Maybe this whole thing was a mistake?

Meanwhile, assuming their warscore is above -25 % and that they've got 2k prestige, the (Jurchen) Jin emperor can inform the puppet emperor that their services are no longer required.

ck2_6.png

Perhaps it is time for direct rule from Zhongdu?

This gives the puppet emperor an ultimatum: Submit (resulting in them losing their empire title and becoming a vassal) or declare war to try to drive (Jurchen) Jin out of China (and also invalidating their war against Song, if that's still ongoing). It is doubtful that this will be an easy war to win, and losing would be bad, but maybe you can pull it off if you can get a good alliance with someone.

Should a puppet emperor die without a dynastic heir, their overlord will immediately step in and take all of their land, so that's another option for integration if you're unsure how much of a fight they could put up.

That's all for today. The patch notes for 13.0.0 will have to wait a few days as there's a lot to include. They'll be posted alongside a release date announcement.

A nitpick, Gao Yongchang was Bohai, not Han. So if you treat Balhae and Jeong'an Kings as Koreans, then so should Gao Yongchang be Go Yeongchang.

I've only come across the former name (not that he has been easy to find at all...), which is why I went with ethnically Korean (due to the little information I found about Balhae ties) but culturally Han, but if that's not the case he can be changed easily enough.

Is there a list of impossible starts anywhere? That is right up there with starting as the Jewish Alan and forming Israel as a merchant republic.

I think there was a list for vanilla which had some landed eunuchs, some women with non-dynastic heirs past childbearing age right at the start, and the like posted way back when, but given that the search function isn't working well it's probably hard to find.

I can think of at least two worse starts in Tianxia that have been added in 13.0.0, however: Fang La and Lü Shinang. Both start at war with a more powerful Song, and though they have some event troops to help them (or, rather, to keep Song busy) they will have everything they own taken from them if they lose their war (seeing as they weren't actually landed revolters and only are landed to ensure their war works). I don't remember if they have any good marriage options (it's possible, since they start a few years later and a candidate could have been born), but if they don't their only real hope to survive is to capture Huizong (or anyone that succeeds him, should he die prior to the end of the war) in battle (given that he is a Craven Misguided Warrior, I wouldn't expect him to take to the field personally) or a siege (good luck sieging down Bianjing in time...).

So if I am neither the Tenno or a dynast of his, I can send the Imperial Regalia to the EoC?

On that topic, what factors affect the likelihood of the EoC accepting tributes and the Grace the tribute senders get?

So if I am neither the Tenno or a dynast of his, I can send the Imperial Regalia to the EoC?

As things currently stand, yes. This is actually a bit stricter than for vanilla's reformer artefacts (only the current rel head is blocked there, unchanged from vanilla).

On that topic, what factors affect the likelihood of the EoC accepting tributes and the Grace the tribute senders get?

At all? He must not dislike you (a lot of things are checked; use the "Determine Grace Feedback" targeted decision to see if you're safe or not), assuming he is AI-controlled (a human can still accept (and can refuse for no good reason, too), though the AI wouldn't send a request an AI would rightfully refuse).

For himself rather than for his heir/a vassal? A combination of traits (e.g. a Lustful EoC will probably keep a concubine for himself unless he's homosexual, Celibate, etc.), eligibility (e.g. if a woman sits on the Dragon Throne she can't accept concubine tributes for herself (not even if homosexual, since CK2 isn't designed to handle that)), and the perceived value of the tribute (based on vanilla's script and checking e.g. the traits on a character being sent or the quality of an artefact).

The amount of Grace mostly depends on the perceived value and whether the EoC/his heir gets it or someone else, though there are a few other bits (e.g. a Greedy EoC will give you more Grace for money than a Charitable one).

Hanami lovers?

There are some events that can result in tumbling/getting a lover during the Hanami, and one of them previously didn't properly check for compatible orientation.

I find it jarring that Ancestor Veneration is ineligible for CI gov. I understand the mechanic reasons, that it requires a head, but in the historical Chinese empires ancestor veneration is a big deal. Maybe you guys can make it so that ancestor who meets certain conditions are immediately venerated even with no head, both to model historical culture and to give some value to Autonomous?

It's an unfortunate side-effect caused by Cosmopolitan + any non-Autonomous Leadership resulting in GHWs and thus having to be blocked because that isn't something we want to give CI rulers. Automatic veneration with Autonomous (and unlocking Ancestor Veneration with Autonomous) would mean a change to vanilla in a fashion that's outside the scope of Tianxia (it's not a bugfix, a consequence of an addition, or effectively exclusive to our part of the map), and just unlocking it for a few religions would be inconsistent (and inconsistent design is generally a bad idea), so that's not an option.

However, to slightly spoil the next dev diary and the third dev diary from now, one of the current plans for 14.0.0 (due to... the topic of the second dev diary from now, it's unlikely to be something that's feasible to do in a bugfix patch, and there was a reason to not do it in 13.0.0) is to update the conditions for being eligible for CI (and ConBu, and <Redacted>), and Ancestor Veneration (and the unique Thanist Doctrine) not being an option is something that likely will be fixed as a consequence of some related changes.

What religions are eligible for CI gov now?

Currently (and in 13.0.0) Taoist, Buddhist, and specific reformations of Shenist, Thanist, Muist, and Ryukyuan. There's also a culture requirement unless you use the game rule to disable that (which still will be an option in 13.0.0).

Is it too far fetched to have Christian or Manichaen or Jewish Chinese Emperors?

From a plausibility standpoint? Some or all of the religions in question might not be entirely implausible.

From a mechanics/balance/implementation/etc. standpoint? You can at the very least rule out any religion with Crusades/GHWs, multiple holy orders, Divine Blood, and/or autocephaly, which takes out nearly all of the religions you mentioned.

Uhm, why not multiple holy orders and Autocephaly? And Buddhism in Tianxia has multiple orders too...
