Why not consider it an upgrade? Dorian's version is a firsthand experience. Maybe that's what the writers wanted to be lore? A lore can be wrong or subject to change. Kinda like the whole elf wanking which essentially says that there are no true elven culture left. So Dragon Age's elves are the romantization of the original story in the game. Like horned vikings. It's a major lore changer.
As a major opponent of mages I say lock them up! Having mages free is like a spawn of Trump people running around freely waiting to pop and doing something evil or harmful to others. Blood magick or no its unaccountable for and thus the very definition of dangerous. So in the next installment I'm looking forward to putting the Soporati in power in Tevinter if its possible.
Not every change is a good change. I won't consider it an upgrade because I
don't. And anyone who says it's because I'm an old fogie who played DA:O and can't let go? Is not right. I did DA:II first, got bored halfway through, played DA:O, was enraptured, played DA:II fully and cringed at Flemeth's redesign among many other things. And when a game dev flat out says that the reason a seemingly reasonable person (Orsino) goes crazy is because the end game needed more bosses? I tend to view their ideas on 'needed' changes with skepticism.
Treating the Dwarves like the redheaded step-children is uncool. Also? The blatant Blizzard ripoffs only made the setting less interesting for me.
Bioware: "We're never going to answer whether the Maker exists or not because it's about faith."
Bioware: *Proceeds to dismantle all evidence of Maker's existence.*
It was actually a bald elf and another bald elf (no relation) all along. Also , you know how the Dwarves are radically different from the other races because they don't dream , aren't connected to the Fade and can't use magic ? That was a bald elf too.
Darkspawn? Bald elf.
Archdemons? Bald elf.
Demons? Bald elf.
That old lady that talks too much? Bald elf.
So basically: news at eleven "local egghead ruins everything".
Also Dwarves were made by Titans.
Bioware: *Desperately tries to hide idea from Blizzard lawyers.*
And magic is related to the Titans in some way.
Blizzard: I CAN SMELL BLOOD.
Bioware: nuuuuuuuuu-
Humans are just tall fucking Dorfs. Fuck that idiocy.
So, you can see I just ignore the people who continue to have 'Liking Dorfs is like being a pedophile' as an opinion.
As for mage lockup? For fuck's sake. That's a symptom of the idiocy of the later games.
I think that Mages should be allowed to have more rights. Keep the phylacteries, and the Circles are schools where they have to graduate from to be recognized as legal mages. Also havens for them. And knowledge areas. Allows them to have their own lives, but also makes sure they can handle the power they have.
It's a happy middle, and means that if they end up going rogue or insane blood mage? Phylacteries are there to aid in putting them down, and local Templars are called in.
There also needs to be a tribunal of sorts to handle disputes. Giving a mage the chance to defend themselves in a court of Templars and Magi.
Also, might I mention that I absolutely
loathe the Avvar?
They literally nullify the entire Mage-Templar debate by
existing.
"There's this whole debate on the dangers of Mages versus their rights? Oh, we can exorcise Demons no problem!"
Then what was the fucking point of Dragon Age II?!
