The good news is that thanks to help of talias, richvh and blackninja9939 the Gladiator spamming is partly resolved!
The problem remains a little if your gladiator is particularly able he could do a fight any 2 months and then you are spammed, again...

Probably the fact that the thing is based on the "luck" of the Gladiator himself is not the best idea... maybe it would be better if we had used a specific ruler decision something as "Hold a Gladiator Fight" we could have maybe more interesting the thing if we had find a way model the battles between gladiators of two different houses (maybe using the duel engine of Galle?) :cool:

What do you think? Let me know your ideas please...

By the way I've restrict the decision "become a gladiator" at characters with martial at least 20, not landed (it does not make sense that the Patrician of Badjoz decide to "suicide" himself becoming a gladiator, note that a ruler should get an event to emulate Emperor Commodus) and, more importantly, not the son of the ruler! This should "cure" the problem a little (being less Gladiators less fights...) but it could not be the real solution...

Good I could say to you that I'm yet working to it (and I don't know Frank because it is a little I don't hear him but he had great projects the last time I hear him) I'm a little stuck creating the event chain for "The Defender of the Faith" in this period... you should have patience as this is our first modding experience and so mistakes could happens.

If you, dear players, could let us know what do you think of this new release would be better... at least we should see this as a sort of encouragement to continue the work!
Thanks...

Developer Diary - The Defender of the Faith

In this Developer Diary we explore a new mechanic we are adding to "The Commune of Rome": The Defender of the Faith.
As you have noticed it is too easy to defeat the Pope being the Commune of Rome: if you decide to accept the Holy Roman Emperor vassalization he does not try to attack you anymore (he fear the Emperor) and so you simply eat all his land using counties claim CB until he simply become landless, right?
Well no anymore! Now the Pope has a sort of ally "The Defender of the Faith" that:

  1. He is called in all offensive wars of the Pope
  2. He is called in all defensive wars of the Pope
  3. He has a special CB against who has usurped Rome from the Pope
But well some images speak more that a lot of word so...

Here you see the Pope that decides to select "The Defender of the Faith" tipically he should be the Holy Roman Emperor and so the Pope starts evaluating him before...

if the Emperor has not good characteristics (excommunicated, at war with him... as in our scenario, has an Anti Pope, etc...) a random Crusader Kings will be selected...

The Emperor is "The Defender of the Faith"!

The rest of the world is informed that "The Defender of the Faith" is selected...

The Emperor is really happy with the Pope, obviously!

Sometimes could happen that Emperor is not an acceptable candidate to be "The Defender of the Faith", for example in our starting bookmark in which the Emperor is at war with the Pope! So...

As you could imagine the ruler of "The Commune of Rome" is not happy of this, too...

Finally the Pope calls "The Defender of the Faith" against his worst enemy... "The Commune of Rome"!

The Pope could call "The Defender of the Faith" when is attacked, too

In the end I show you the special casus belli that "The Defender of the Faith" could against who has usurped Rome from the Pope...

"The Defender of the Faith" war for Rome

Do you survive to "The Defender of Faith" my brave players? Do you do reach as "The Commune of Rome" / "The Roman Republic"?

P.S. Have you noticed that some screenshots are taken as the Pope, right :happy: ?

3. How do you mod the game to play as the Pope?

You can use console command to give the pope a holy order (Don't know if it works with normal Mercenary titles) and tag switch to him, it wont give you game over. The African pagan holy order is a good one to give to him if you want to play him, not sure how dying and succession works tho, never tried.

Yeah, I noticed.

1. Cool Feature!

2.How did you mod the game to recognize the Defender of the Faith title?

"The Defender of the Faith" is, in reality, a trait I liked to make it shown as title too but sadly it is impossible for a not liege character to give an honorary title to another... it is a pity because a part for this title one could have used for other Pope's given titles as "Catholic Majesty", "Apostolic King" and so on...

3. How do you mod the game to play as the Pope?

As Chewy Yui said I have simply given an Holy Order title to him using the console: he is the Gran Master of the Templars... this seems to transform him in a feudal character do you now he is wearing a crown now?

This weekend I do some test in this release and I'll release it, thanks for your support...

Hi, I made some COA for the default Patrician families of the Commune (Excluding Orisini which P-Dox has COA for already), I didn't see anything about it in the thread (but I am tired atm so may have missed if it was there). Hopefully these are of some use to you.
Source for them is from (mainly) Italian Wikipedia - http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armoriale_delle_famiglie_italiane

Annibaldi

The Fragipani COA is based on the Croatian Branch of the family, before they changed their name to Frankopan and subsequently changed their COA. It's all I could find for the family :) The colours are abstracted as the image of the COA I found was a bronze shield.

The Annibaldi COA I would have liked to get more detailing on the Lions, but all I could work from was a photo of the COA from a book, but I think it still looks OK and maybe In-game wouldn't be such an issue.

IDK how to upload .tga files or how to implement them into game for existing dynasties, but I can zip-up the .tga and post a Link if you want. I also have a larger version of the Pierleoni and Annibaldi COA if you want them for w/e reason.

Anyway, I hope you like them, or at least give you some basis for work upon your own set of COA or whatever, I can give exact links to source if asked :)

Really thanks for your help!
We have yet to understand well how to mod / add COAs I've seen in mod/gfx/coats_of_arms there are tga files in which the COAs are put using some particular group schema (more COA in a file apparently) then mod/common/dynasties the magic happens:

Code:
2109000 = {
	name="Pytheid"
	culture = greek
	divine_blood=yes
	coat_of_arms = {
		template = 0
		layer = {
			texture = 10
			texture_internal = 0
			emblem = 0
			color = 0
			color = 0
			color = 0
		}
	}
}

This part is really not clear to me: the game is using one of the COA file but the file name is not indicated and how the images is taken between all the ones in the COA file?

I used the CoA builder tool for custom coat of arms. It lets you build them how you want and gives you a code to put them in-game.

Let me know what you think, I'll probably do some more work on it over the weekend to try and get them more in line with how P-Dox 'historical' COA's look and to have them lined up better in-game.

I followed this tutorial, it was really helpful. http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?591229-TUTORIAL-How-to-Add-Custom-Coats-of-Arms

Excellent work my friend!
Let me know when you are ready to integrate your work in the mod...

Glad you like them! Anyway, I went and "cleaned" them a bit, made them nicer and so that they line up better in game. They're ready to be added if you approve of them. Just merge this with the base folder for the mod. The Commune of Rome - COA

Changes made are - '00_dynasties.txt' in common/dynasties folder (added the custom COA to the 4 Patrician families) 'coats_of_arms.txt' in the interface folder (so the game will search for the custom COA) and added a 'coats_of_arms' folder in gfx (with the new COA graphics)

Pics below with changes. You can see the main 3 sizes of the COA that will appear in-game :)

Guys, this mod is awesome, but how can I make work with HIP? I try enabling the commune of rome- hip option in the launcher, but I get weird bugs. For instance, I get a lot of bugged decisions in the decisions menu, called "if", "prestige", "allow", etc. Also colliseum doesn't get built in the city view. It stays unbuilt with condition "never", even though I get all the events about finding relics inside and the such from building. This happens even when I use CoR with vanilla.

As said in change log there is no compatibility garantue with HIP, I simply tried to enable them togheter and seemed to do not happen to much weird things... I didn't look well apparently :eek:o
Probably more work needs to be done to make it compatible with HIP...

Are you sure to use the last version 2.02? With previous version this bug was present but now after some time you should get the end of the event chain and the Colosseum built... a note I had a problem in the beta testing phase using a save create with 2.00 alpha, the event chain never ended but effectively Frank had solved the problem, I need to restart the game and finally I had the Colosseum built and I could enable the Gladiators....

Good Sunday to all!

New version today: here

Change log:

  1. Added "The Defender of the Faith" as special title / trait to defender the Pope against attacks
  2. "The Commune of Rome" patricians families have now the correct historical COAs (thanks to Chewy Yui for the excellent work!)
  3. Fixed the Doge's title for the new Italian cultures
With this I announce that this mod is in "hibernation" for now, maybe you will see "The Commune of Rome" in other forms inside other mods (well this already happened :D) in the future...

Gladiator events fire way too much, and almost always are negative, and people are lining up to become gladiators. Honestly, I'm reconsidering if the Colosseum is a good investment. xD Also, how did the status of the Volantene succession go=?
