SWMH is fully compatible with Vanilla without any other Modules of course. Just like all other parts of HIP
It is worth nothing that there are a few things which you may expect to be vanilla-like in gameplay on standalone SWMH (SWMH installed with no other HIP modules-- not EMF, specifically). The different properties of the map make various vanilla mechanics like vassal limit and such behave very differently than vanilla, and SWMH still uses vanilla defines (with a small exception). We've got it to the point where nothing should be outright broken, but the EMF+SWMH compatch specifically treats for these aspects of making SWMH more playable at this time. Perhaps we can adapt those parts of EMF+SWMH to SWMH so that it's what you'd actually expect. Otherwise, e.g., for the Conclave compatch, infamy/coalitions will be completely and utterly insane on standalone SWMH, as one example.
TL;DR: It's worth nothing that a) standalone SWMH doesn't play like it should due to a mismatch between historical goals and vanilla gameplay goals, and b) EMF+SWMH has several unique SWMH-specific features-- aside from specializations-- which are intended to make SWMH play-out more historically and workably in-game and such.
But, yeah, it works-- not going to crash or something. The HIP installer would never let you choose an installation configuration that was known not to work.
