Version 0.4 is up!

Code:
SoH 0.4 - 03/15/12

- Incorporated Syren's Culture Buildings Mod (many thanks to him for that!)
- Added coats of arms for Burgundy (duchy and kingdom), Epirus and Nikaea courtesy of pothkan.
- Moved Saxon culture to the 'north_germanic' group.
- Moved Dutch culture to the 'central_germanic' group.
- Moved Scottish culture to the 'west_germanic' group.
- Changed Scottish culture from 'celticgfx' to 'englishgfx'.
- Renamed Scottish to Scots.
- Renamed Saxon to Anglo-Saxon.
- Renamed Galician-Portuguese to Galician (the name was too long, and (Old) Galician is still more accurate than Portuguese).
- Tweaked a number of traits.
- England now has the Gravelkind succession law until the reign of Edward I.
- Corrected England's history file by adding its pre-1066 monarchs (I've separated Eadward from Edward to avoid numbering issues).
- Corrected the history files of several French counties by changing their liege from the duke of Gascogne to the duke of Aquitaine.
- Moved the county of Foix to the de jure duchy of Toulouse.
- Removed 'the Affable' from the list of triggered-only nicknames (so it can now appear like any other nickname).
- Added the 'greedy' trait to Henry III.
- Added the 'misguided_warrior' trait to Henry III.
- Added the 'scholarly_theologian' trait to Henry III.
- Added the 'crusader' trait to Richard the Lionheart and Edward I.
- Added the 'homosexual' trait to Richard the Lionheart and Edward II.
- Added the 'skilled_tactician' trait to William I, Edward III and Edward the Black Prince.
- Added the 'wroth' trait to Edward the Black Prince.
- Corrected the birth and death dates for Edward the Black Prince.
- Added Sibylla as Queen of Jerusalem in place of Guy de Lusignan (he was only king jure uxoris).
- Added several new bookmarks with descriptions.
- Replaced the kingdoms of Anatolia and Hellas with Epirus and Nikaea respectively.
- Replaced the duchy of Gascogne's history file with a dummy file since it has been merged into the duchy of Aquitaine.
- Changed Cornwall (31) from Welsh to Breton culture.
- Changed a few county/duchy and culture colors to better highlight border contrast.

All feedback/bug reports here please.

Oh, one oversight from the change log is that I've slightly tweaked Harold Godwinson and William the Conqueror's starting forces so as to give Harold a bit more of a chance (as he also has to defeat the Norwegians).

Simply that I didn't want English to be in its own culture group when Scottish seems to represent lowland Scots culture as opposed to Gaelic. If you look at the naming convention and list of available names for Scottish it's very similar to English, whereas Welsh, Breton and Irish are far more Celtic-looking. Also, there should be much less of a penalty for a Scot as an earl, duke or king in England than for a Gaelic chief from Ireland or Wales. I may add a separate highland Scots culture to the Celtic group in 0.5; this will help to represent the lowland/highland split which developed between the ruling class in Lothian and Strathclyde and the clans north of the Grampians. I hope this makes sense, and you can now see why I did this.

Remember that there were a lot of marriages between English and Scots royalty, whereas the English would never have dreamed of marrying into Celtic chiefdoms/petty kingdoms.

In 0.4b I will address any bugs we find, as well as add the remaining bookmark text. I've finished the text for the two 1066 bookmarks, which I think are both quite good.

Do you have any feedback thus far?

Oh, and Harold Godwinson will now be displayed as Harold II of England (which he is classed as), and if Hardrade wins he should becoming Harold III. :)

I see what you're doing with the Scots, and I think it would be good to go ahead and add the highland culture for the reasons you identify.

It's all looking great so far. In fact, it's looking so good that I can't bring myself to start another game as anyone in the Isles until you've finished 0.5. So maybe I'll just start one as a Spaniard or something while I wait for 0.5. ( I guess I could just finish my 1.03b Wales game, but in that one I've expanded from Wales into Ireland, and that just feels gamely to me, for some reason.)

Well 0.5 will require a great deal more work, as it will mean going through various earls' and dukes' history files and re-writing them accordingly. I can see that being quite tedious. I'm not sure what else I may have to change accordingly, but if you wanted to start a new game as Wales then I think 0.4 will be just as fun because I've revised the culture setup and I still think the current Hereford+Wales version of Wales is pretty well balanced.

Of course if you wish to wait then that is up to you, but I do plan on releasing 0.4b before 0.5 with minor fixes and adjustments.

As for Iberia, I still need to tweak it a little as I want it so that the kingdoms of Castille and León can not be created once Castille-León has formed. I am not sure of the best way to go about this, but I have found an example on the forum of an event which may help me do it. Ideally I'd like to fix the Castille/Castille-León naming issue, but I'm not sure how to do that without making all previous kings of Castille also appear as kings of Castille-León.

Either way, have fun and enjoy 0.4 :)

I can just imagine the amount of work entailed in 0.5.

I think what I'll do is start a game as Wales in 0.4 and run it as a play test, so if there's anything that seems to be not working as you intended I can let you know.

Do you know if the beta hotfix for vanilla 1.04 is stable?

I haven't tried it because I have the Steam version of the game so I do not really want to mess around with the .exe before Steam updates the game itself when the patch is officially released. Therefore, because I do not know what the beta patch changes I would not recommend it... but if it's only changes to the .exe then there should be no problems as I will obviously never modify that file myself.

Of course I will update the latest version of the mod when 1.05 is released. In fact, I may wait for it before I release 0.5 as I believe there are stability issues with the current patch (though curiously I have yet to experience any myself).

I'll run a couple of test games myself before I release 0.4b, but hopefully there won't be any major issues.

I hope you like the new culture buildings... that is not my work (the author is credited) but I very much like what he has done and was going to do the same before I realized someone else already had. So for example the Saxons now share their bonuses and Huscarls with the Norse (also now their culture group) but the English and Welsh will get Longbows.

I'm trying to install this, but success eludes me. How do I go about it?

(I downloaded the mod, uncompressed it, and put the SOH folder into the game's mod folder. But something else seems to be necessary. The game doesn't seem to see the mod -- it doesn't list it in the load screen.)

I've started a new game as Harald Hardrade; I lost to Harold Godwinson and had to concede defeat, losing a lot of gold, prestige and my claim to England. I then got on with running Norway, assuming that William would eventually win, but then I happened to click Normandy one day to see Robert II as Duke, and this when I clicked England:

Good luck to the Saxons I suppose.

Do you think I should change England to elective monarchy until William becomes king? I think it would better represent the way the Anglo-Saxon nobility essentially picked the most powerful and influential noble as king.

I'm not sure what the problem is. If you put SoH (folder) and SoH (module file) in your CK II mod folder, the mod should appear in your mod list.

All versions have worked fine for me.

I've been reviewing the thread on installing mods, but I'm not clear on how to use the description file named "<modname>.mod". I don't see such a file in your mod. Do I need to create one in order to get it to work from the mod folder?

EDIT: Just saw your post above. I'll check my installation again.

EDIT: Ok, got it working now. I'd put both the SOH folder and the module file into the mod folder together in one folder. Once I put the module file in outside the SOH folder, the game recognized the mod.

Congrats to the Anglo-Saxons! (I've always favored them over the Normans.)

I do think that elective monarchy would best reflect the Anglo-Saxon way of choosing kings.

Looking forward to starting a new game using 0.4 during my lunch break today.

- Moved Scottish culture to the 'west_germanic' group.
- Changed Scottish culture from 'celticgfx' to 'englishgfx'.
- Renamed Scottish to Scots.

I don't see any justification of this and it just seems absurd. Scottish in the game is very clearly Gaelic, not the English-influenced Lowlands.

Here's the cultural set up of CK2:
2jezc07.jpg

And this is the total spread of "Scots" by the year 1400 CE. They also called it "Inglis" at the time and it was limited to the Red seen here, so clearly Paradox decided that using the Ænglisc (Saxons) as the local culture was the way to go (Scottish/Scots used to equal Gaelic).

Yes, but lowland Scotland shouldn't be Anglo-Saxon. As I've already said, in 0.5 I will have Scotland divided between lowland and highland Scots (as well as some Norse).

Ah, so it's gone from "May add" to "Will have" now. Alrighty.

I don't see the justification for calling what is in-game Scottish rulers as Inglis, however. Just because he's Anglicized as Malcolm the Third doesn't make him stop being "Máel Coluim mac Donnchada". Keep in mind that the Lowlands were not Inglis at all yet. Those lands were limited to half of the Southern Uplands. Even the three Ænglisc provinces in vanilla is being generous since at most it was 2½.

All the Kings are Anglicized. Even Cináed mac Ailpín back in 843 is called "Kenneth I".

Might it be possible to add in the council-shuffling and death causes mini mods? I'd love to have that added functionality in this mod, since this mod has basically become the standard way I'll be playing CK2. (I don't know how much work that would take, though.)

EDIT: I see you've been looking at the Saxon England mod. Very interesting information there. I agree with your thought that some or all of it might be helpful to your work on 0.5. (It seems to me that one problem with vanilla 1.04 is that the English duchies relate more to a time long after 1066 than they do to how things were actually organized at the game's start date.)

I will certainly look into this, although I haven't used either of those mods and I am unsure as to how much work it will be implementing them. If it's not too much work and the authors don't mind, then of course I shall consider it.

Yes, that was one of the first mods that took my interest and there are some good ideas floating about there. I agree that the vanilla England setup isn't really up to scratch, but the question is what the best overall setup would be. If things go historically you might want some dukes later on, but if the Saxons win then of course there'd be no reason to have anything but three or four powerful earls with large tracts of land.

For 0.5 I shall attempt to come to some sort of compromise here, and try and sort out the numbering issue with kings of Castille-León.

Finally, I am glad you consider my mod your standard. Very kind of you, and it's all I play as well (though I still enjoy seeing what other people have done).

Purely out of interest, in my Harald Hardrade game one of Harold Godwinson's daughters married Philippe I of France, so they are now allies.

Also, my two eldest sons - Magnus and Olaf - died, so my heir (who everyone else is currently supporting) is my youngest son, Prince Eadweard. I named him myself of course. I also have two daughters called Godwine and Haralda. I have no idea if any of these would be suitable as late 11th century Norwegian names, but I was inspired by my valliant foe Harold the Great and eventually I'd like to ally with his dynasty.

I like this.

Vanilla 1.04c is officially out now. Apparently just a few necessary fixes that couldn't wait. (The only real difference from 1.04b beta is the sound reversion, which apparently fixes the crashes that were happening with the beta.)

In regards to reworking England for 0.5, I trust your judgment, based on your decision making in this mod so for.
