Lol. It's funny you say that. In all honesty, when @KingTao86 was around we discussed using a version control stategy. I guess you could call my current system 'nightly', but there are no crazy frills to it. I usually have 3 versions of the mod at any given time. Public. Stable. Test.

Public is the last published version of the mod. I try to keep this in a stable enjoyable state.

Stable means the mod is running successfully with additional fixes and changes applied.

Test is usually the wip version that will often break when I am trying out new features, scripts, etc.

Ever since I started this project I have realized that a lot of people enjoy this era (as well as other parts of Asian history such as the warring states, sengoku, etc.) I have tossed around the idea of starting a kickstarter to launch a game that would compete with Koei's RoTK and DW series. May just complete a budget estimate and see.

Will this mod ever fix the heraldry? I don't know what the Chinese version of it was, or if it corresponds at all to the system CK2 forces you to use, but seeing the vanilla randomized CoA is an eyesore (three cyan clam shells on a field of dark and light purple, a black unicorn on a maroon field with a dark green diagonal strike).

I don't mean making customized heraldry, I mean making the randomized heraldry look less disgusting. Like Patrum Scuta and making them use whatever banners the Mongols use in Patrum Scuta or ARKO's or something, rather than shield shaped European banners.

Hmm. I will check out the mods you suggested. I haven't paid attention to CoA only because it never existed in China. The closest thing to it would be Clan banners which were only used by military commanders to organize armies, but this would require the custom work that you suggested not doing.

In every day life, the rank insignia and dress/uniform you wore said more about you than anything else. Unless your clan was at the very top of the food chain, for example the Imperial Liu. But people really didn't walk around with family crests or coats of arms. I will check the mods regardless.

Latest Version Up!

I haven't finished the clan rivalry concept, nor the random events either. Though I can tell you what ideas I have.

1) Bridge Crossing - Run into peasants with a broken wagon.
2) Flooding Rivers - You hear of flooding displacing the locals.
3) Wild Pup Found - During a hunt, a pack of wolves attack.

The latest version has been tested using 3 grades of PCs with some, all, and no DLCs (with and without Addons). I have performed 10 tests in observation mode and 5 playthroughs ranging from 1-3 generations. I experienced 0 CTDs during gameplay, though I did experience 3 CTDs after reloading saves a few times (which I assumed was due too much memory?).

Changelog:

(0.938)
  • Updated Limit Territory event chain.
  • Updated Warlord, Chancellor, Emperor events and decisions.
  • Updated and streamlined various other events.
  • Added a few more graphics.
  • Updated more vanilla localizations.
(0.937)
  • Overhauled Limit Territory event chain (there should be no more CTDs).
  • Added Weapons and Horses events.
  • Removed In the Field event.
  • Updated Final Invasions.
  • Streamlined dozens of decisions and events.
  • Updated cultures and religions.
  • Updated graphics.
  • Updated localizations.
  • Various other minor updates.
  • 5 characters added.

@Enriador I have fixed the LAMA localization. It will be in the next update.

Anyone having any issues with the mod? I found a typo in the execution file that may cause ctds, not sure.

We have added 30 Sun 3rd and 4th generation characters as the children of Guan Yu and Zhang Fei.

Also, I just discovered an anime on Three Kingdoms called Souten Kouro. It's pretty radical and takes a more humorous take on the characters. Check it out and tell me what y'all think. No spoilers though! I don't want to ruin the plot. :p

Looks awesome. I think I will enjoy this greatly :)

I'm a bit surprised that the Kingdom of Shu looks stronger than Wu in 220 scenario.

I would think Wei:Wu:Shu's power balance should be closer to 5:3:1, or if we take the population into account, 420:230:94.

I strongly, strongly recommend reading manga over anime. SK Manga is available in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, and partially in English, and it is considered one of the best mangas on the three kingdoms era(with the likes of Ravage of Time). It actually doesn't have a humorous vibe to it. It's quite over-dramatic and exaggerating but still badass. The badassery level is probably on par with Berserk here with some depictions of famous heroes, for instance Zhang Liao at Hefei. I would rate it 4/5.

On the other hand the anime is considered one of the worst animes on the three kingdoms era among fans; practically a joke. It was received badly and commercially failed as well. Trust me, the original manga isn't supposed to be that comical nor cheap. 0/5, IMO. Avoid at all cost!

I bought and watched the 1994 series in 1995 (without subs) while I was in Beijing. And then watched the 2010 series as it was translated by Jianghu. I enjoyed both.

1994 has better story and acting.
2010 had better fight scenes and costumes. That's also 15 years of film tech improvements though... So I definitely preferred the 1994 version. Highly recommend it for any uninitiated.

I am so glad this exists! I've been hoping Paradox would build an East Asia game for years, but I didn't even think to look for a dedicated mod. While I'd love something that covers a thousand years, realistically the Three Kingdoms is a great time period for CK2. Can't wait to try it tonight when I get home from work. Will be sure to give you some feedback, but thank you for building this, it looks amazing!

Howdy gang,

I want to thank everyone here, on reddit, on moddb, etc. who have continued to inform me on issues or add their thoughts on different features we can add as well as any characters not already present in the game.

Current status:
  • I have added some 50 odd characters so far (mostly to Wu, several to Shu, and a few to Wei and others.
  • Updated more title inheritance/usurpation events
  • Added a few other casus belli and correlated events
  • Updated Chancellor/Empire related events (they were wonky and firing for the wrong reasons)
  • Updated a dozen maintenance and random events
  • Updated several decisions
  • Added/updated several titles (there were several provinces named or placed incorrectly originally)
  • Reduced disease occurence (I feel like diseases occur and spread way too far and fast)
  • Updated several localizations
  • More graphics updates
  • Fixed several typos in various files that may have caused CTDs or errors (ex: some deaths by executions)
  • Added a few more random events

P.S. Just a note for people that say there aren't enough events in the game. I agree with you. If you aren't into the fighting aspects and you don't have the WoL and other DLCs, then your game will have limited random events. I have added over 100 events into the game already, but most of these events are background processes to create the Imperial Chinese flavor wrapped around a Feudal European CK2 engine. I want to write more random events for you, but I generally don't find as much as much satisfaction from writing these events. I've tried working with a few others in doing this, but the core majority of the event scripting has been from my end. I will try to get more out as I realize it adds enjoyment to use experience, but it's not really something I enjoy making all too much.

This is because I have to write several paragraphs of script for a truly complex enjoyable event chain that then only fires once in a while... The input/output ratio for these random events is skewed... But I do want to implement the Petition system which will randomly add counters on your capital (each one reducing tax/levy and increasing revolt risk), forcing you to 'hold court' and deal with random Petition related events.

Anyway... Thanks for the continued support and fandom. I wish we could get the kind of fandom that the major mods enjoy, but I realize that the majority of fans for this genre would be in Asia... And unfortunately this game doesn't support Asian language encoding. Bah!

tl;dr - Working on events. Meh. Wish I could work on an engine that supported Asian encoding.

Update later this week will include 50+ more characters, more event corrections, localization fixes, and more war/title history up to 200. Everything will be updated to 2.6.2 as well.

The main focus of the next stage of this mod is to add all of the fantastic events and terrible battles of the Three Kingdoms into the game leading up to and beyond Red Cliffs. Because nobody has offered to expand the map, there are still no plans to add Vietnam or Japan. I might include Japan as a landless title, but we will see.

EDIT: Also, Sun Ce won't be fat anymore.

Yeah, I realized that there are still many missing characters from the Sun clan.
Sun Ce's, Sun Yi's and Sun Kuang's, and Sun Quan's descendants, for example.
I also think that Zhuge Ke, Ma Cheng (Ma Chao's son) and Liu Zhang's son, Liu Xun, are still missing.

I honestly don't think Vietnam and Japan are need additions. In my mind there is already plenty of room to add more depth without needing to add new areas/cultures.
