Please look forward to another update (changes already completed) which:

  • fixes several events/decisions
  • fixes several character/title history issues
  • replaces several vanilla flavor schemes and localizations (replaces deus vult! and several church, crusade, and bible references)
  • adds 200 characters (including more fleshed out Wu, Wei, Shu, and Yuan officer counts)
  • mercenaries re-added
  • game balancing (including province/holding changes)
  • fixes provinces names/history for historical accuracy
  • fixes and adds ~75 province histories so that the map is more filled out beyond 194
  • testing a new feature where characters can form independent clan armies without landed territories to represent Liu Bei, Lu Bu, Sun Ce and others at various times (potentially playable from bookmark screen?)

The Black Sheep
Born the eldest son of Yuan Shao, I am lucky to have inherited the Yuan name through my noble father. He fought victoriously against the Yellow Turbans in Youzhou and Qingzhou. He remained ever loyal to the Han throughout his tenure. Unfortunately, my father's life was cut short by villainous assassins. His murderer heretofore remains unknown, but I have my suspicions.

Having risen to the seat of power in Bohai, vicious rumors spread around that I was my father's killer. Base and unseemly, they nonetheless affected my reputation with my peers. Like my father, I was an avid supporter of family. I sponsored my brother Yuan Xi for the Imperial Examinations. He passed with flying colors and gained a county seat in Yan. Once I had a son, I sponsored my brother Yuan Shang as well so as to secure my son's inheritance. Yuan Shang still serves at court.

My darkest day came during a territorial war between my lord Han Fu, Inspector of Ji, and Liu Bei, newly appointed Inspector of Yan. In the midst of battle my young brother Yuan Xi came charging at me. Why someone put him in a battlefield I will never understand. I could have run away and avoided the conflict, but our army's position was tenuous. I was the prime commander of Ji. And I had to maintain morale. I dueled my brother, and slew him in the field, allowing our army to win the day. A military victory, a personal defeat.

I became known as kinslayer. A person willing to do anything to gain fame and fortune. My own Yuan clan rejects me. Shang at the capital won't speak to me. My cousins always plot against me. Less than a year after the war ended in victory, I declared war on my Liege and secured Ji under my rule.

Now Governor, I, Yuan Tan, stand witness and testament to the greatness of my clan. Though my clan distrusts me, I still serve them. I have placed my kin in key positions throughout my province. As long as I live, the Yuan name will not be forgotten. My brother's blood was not spilled in vain! For the Emperor! For the Han! For my clan!

(Yuan Tan, succeeded Yuan Shao in 193. 184 campaign)

Will the map ever get more pronounced terrain? The Central Plains aren't that flat, are they? I don't even see Mount Tai.
Isn't China more diverse in height than that?

Forgive me if that sounded rude, I'm just honestly confused as to whether the map isn't fully completed or I'm ignorant of Chinese terrain

Anyways, just discovered this mod, and I'm very pleased that it even exists.
You have a new fan!

Lastly, is it easily possible to get a white "province" map of the mod's current map, just like this map of vanilla and this map of swmh?

Well, some people prefer more level map, with less pronounced terrain.

I can understand that, but many provinces that I would assume to have "mountains" terrain (or "hills" at least) are just forest and plains.
Shouldn't at least the mountainous ridge-lines south of Chang'an and around the Wei Valley be present?
I've been under the impression that the mountain ranges and passes of western China have been instrumental in strategy throughout Chinese history.

Somehow there is bug with the rise of Dong Zhuo events in the Turban Rebellion bookmark. The events leading up to to the rise of Dong Zhuo fire, but the Devil in Luoyang event doesn't fire.

I made a few changes in the code, and I haven't had the issue come up yet. Will be included in the next update. Just a note, the Devil in Luoyang event doesn't fire until 4 months MTTH (mean time to happen).

Will the map ever get more pronounced terrain? The Central Plains aren't that flat, are they? I don't even see Mount Tai.

I hear what you are saying mate. I wouldn't mind if someone wanted to work on the terrain.bmp and add more terrain flavor. This is not currently on my to do list since there are literally thousands of characters to create, and hundreds of title history entries to add, not to mention the hundreds of events/decisions yet to be written.

The terrain.bmp file can be found in the map folder of the mod. Good luck!

I made a little mod that replaces some resources/stats with more or less appropriate chinese characters. They weren't really chosen with a particular system in mind, so I'm very open to suggestions.

What about color coding them and/or adding little symbols next to them to make them more obvious (like a small sword with the character for martial)

The characteristics do have a VERY light background, but it's so light you can't see it, even in other circumstances like the character browser. I'll change that when I get around to it. Wealth, prestige and piety don't, right now... any suggestion for good colors? I'm actually terrible at coming up with entirely new ones ;).

More Updates!

0.9 wip
  • New improved province integrity events.
  • New improved empire forming events.
  • 50+ more characters added to the mix. I plan to release as 0.9 once all the empty spaces (provinces) are filled up to 200. Putting off the 208 goal for 0.91 version.
  • New Nobility ranks being tested. Grantable by the Divine Emperor. (Marquis, Duke, King, Emperor = Self-abdication)
  • Various character and event bug fixes.
  • More localization updates to remove vanilla flavor.
New
  • Fixes for Emperor/Empress/Guard/Eunuch title handling
  • New events to handle Emperor inheritance
  • Fixed problem with Dong Zhuo event not firing, thanks @NickFeyR
  • Fixed Way of the Five Pecks government, thanks @QwarterPl
  • Added Northern Invasions starting in 300 AD
  • Updated more title histories, filled out most histories for You, Sili, Yan, Qing, Ji, Xu, Jiao, Liang provinces up to three kingdoms era
  • Added 25 more characters
(Eta for 0.9 is 1-2 weeks from today)

Would it be possible to also remove all of the tribal characters/holdings in the north (for people with Horse Lords) to make it more in line with the Horse Lords model of nomads?

It's certainly possible. The way Nomads work (in Horse Lords) is that you have Nomadic Government types at the King/Emperor level. Everything below that is tribal. If you make all the provinces Holdingless, then all the territories go to the Kings/Emperors. No vassals. There are no nomadic tier dukes and counts. This has the double effect of giving each Khan/Khagan nearly 10k soldiers and removing the hierarchy of the nomadic states. I don't personally like the idea of just 3 dudes in the north with doomstacks... But I'd like to hear y'alls thoughts.

It would be cool to have a chance that some dude from the north gets a huge army and invades south. I know its happened a few times :) But also, playing in the borders of the Empire shouldn't be a doom campaign. Some kind of fealty event would be cool. - either "I'm going to take your lands and kill you and your people" or "come join us as we kill others around us."
