Update released. It kind of stalled for a bit there because I've been sick on and off for the past three weeks. I didn't get everything done that I wanted to do but all of the bugs pointed out to me have been fixed. I've also added a system that will alter Byzantium/Rome's flag depending on the holder's faith. Syriac also now has a religious head based in Antioch, so you can play that now without any issues. It still lacks specific content, but you can go on pilgrimages and so on.

Coming up in the next version, which is due for sometime next month, will be various changes to the game's history so that realms and borders suit the new map, a new confederal government type for the HRE and Kievan Rus, new mechanics aimed at vastly empowering tribal realms, events covering the rise of powerful groups such as the Normans, Pechenegs, and Magyars, the addition of Roman provinces, the expansion of Arabic paganism into a full religion, the strengthening of factions, an overhaul of the Abbasid Empire, the addition of the remaining Byzantine guard units, a comprehensive overhaul of Bulgaria made possible due to a wealth of historical information provided by @hackera88, the addition of new titles such as Assyria, Albania, and Thracia, various changes to province shapes, the addition of proto-Yazidi (Yazdani), and events to alter Yazdani into a heresy and spawn Yazidi in its place.

Very small update released fixing the government events. Now you won't change to Constitutional unless you have a strong legislature. Byzantium will also begin with a mixed legislature, granting it twenty five (IIRC) more advisor titles representing the Eparch of Constantinople and the Imperial Senate, since it still existed throughout the Middle Ages. If you choose to empower it, Byzantium will become a consitutional monarchy, and you will gain various bonuses to skills, prestige, and so on, representing the stability that a strong legislature brings. The Roman Empire will eventually gain a decision to form the Roman Republic, which will be locked into the constitutional government type, and will grant you the title of princeps. I would have added alternating consuls if that was possible, but I also like the idea of a reborn Roman Republic having elements of Imperial Rome thrown in, like a single head of state.

If anyone wants to jump right in to playing a constitutional monarchy, the HRE has the Imperial Diet from 1066. Venice also has the Great Council, England becomes a constitutional monarchy after the signing of the Magna Carta, and Leon and Castille become constitutional monarchies in the 1200s.

A small dev diary detailing some changes that will be coming in the future:

One somewhat ahistorical but necessary change I'm going to be adding is a strait between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. A kind of early version of the Suez canal connecting the Nile to the Red Sea operated until it was closed by the Abbasids and covered over, and not being able to transfer ships from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean is a problem. Ships could easily be disassembled at Sinai and reassembled on the Nile, and it will allow the Abbasid vassal fleets to operate in the Mediterranean.

The Byzantine theme system is also going to be overhauled. It will now alter the structure of your levies so that defence is prioritised over offense. You'll gain a lot of pikemen and skirmishers, some heavy infantry and light cavalry, but only a small amount of heavy cavalry and horse archers, which will represent the bodyguard of the local doux. The theme laws will be tied into a series of laws that will control the composition of your military, and will have two historical options, representing the theme system and the pronoia system. The pronoia system will active in later start dates, and will work in a similar fashion to the current theme laws, granting bonuses or penalties towards levy numbers. In contrast to the theme system, the pronoia system will be offensive rather than defensive, and will grant a lot of heavy cavalry and light cavalry, some heavy infantry and pikemen, but only a very small amount of horse archers or skirmishers, as the pronoia typically did not use bows.

What about options for Western/Eastern Roman Emperors adopting the republican reforms?

I've considered it before, and it could work. I had an idea for a Byzantine Republic in the past that's ruled by the proedros (President), the de jure head of the senate.

I've come up with a solution that may fix the situation with Navarre owning land in France that the territory system cannot let it control. Since, as the counts of Champagne, the kings of Navarre were legally vassals of the kingdom of France, I'm considering elevating France to an empire. It will still be ruled by a king and will be de jure over both France and Aquitane, and will replace the kingdom in the game's history. The kingdom won't be formable if you hold the empire version. Navarre will be made a de facto, but not de jure, vassal in later start dates. England would receive the same treatment, becoming an empire-level kingdom, and its kingdoms would be locked out for empire-tier holders. I could use this to represent the split between Saxon and Norman England, with the king-level title becoming Saxon England.

Okay, so since the next DLC is bringing really nice map edits, we're going to be moving back to the vanilla map after it releases. This will be combined with changes from Elvain's map for Africa and Bohemia, and we'll be making edits to Moldova to make it look closer to reality. The Talvos map needs too much work to get it working properly with the game's history, and it has a lot of issues I cannot fix. There will be a small update soon also re-enabling the secret religious cults and fixing any other bugs that have been pointed out. Paradox re-did the secret religious societies so that they are no longer based on traits, so minimal work is involved there now, which is great for me.

For all the times that Roman Emperors went on the warpath to conquer Persia, is there any documentation on how Persia would have been divided up?
