Princes of Darkness is an overhaul of the base game, aimed at bringing the World of Darkness into life in Crusader Kings 3. As such, it has many gameplay concepts altered, and use the extensive lore of its world to propose a different experience all around.

The first thing to note is that, as a Vampire, you are immortal... sort of. You won't die of old age or disease, but being put to the torch or decapitated will still end your unlife. As such, succession is a lesser, but still present, concern for you. In the same vein, Marriages can't produce children, so they are mostly a political tool available to a select few religions. Religions are a core part of the gameplay, even more than in CK3. Here, it represents the core philosophical tenets of your character, which help him not fall to the Beast. Indeed, the Beast -a literal manifestation of your inner monstrosity- is one of your worst foes, and managing your stress is paramount to not fall prey to it, as it would mean your character has become a feral wight, resulting in his abdication.Take notice of your hunger, a core modifier representing your need for blood. Hunger is used for many schemes and powers, and replenish slowly or with active hunting.

Vampires are slow at learning new things. As such, you still have access to the base lifestyles, but at a lower rate of progression. You can instead choose to invest your time into the disciplines, opening the powers of the damned for your use. Buildings represent your influence over the mortal populace. Most are capped by a stat like control and you will have to choose how to balance these. Note that major centers of populations, represented by high development duchy capitals are the biggest asset any Prince can dream of. Warfare is sensibly altered, with a bigger emphasis on knights. The prowess of your knights can easily overcome a much more numerous foe, especially if mostly composed of levies. As such, be very wary of high prowess hostile Vampires. In a world full of deceit and tricks, intrigue plays a bigger role. There are new schemes to discover, some linked to your powers, and most of the characters have secrets better left untold... or used for blackmail if their religion allows it.

The World of Darkness is an universe running for more than 30 years now, with hundred of books and other medias covering it. The main idea is that, in our world, several factions of supernaturals creatures are interacting below the surface, creating an underworld full of intrigues and stories. The Vampires of the WoD are mainly the result of the biblical curse against Caine, the first murderer, and most are tracing back their lineage to him in a system they call 'generations'. This dynasty tree of the undeath has branched into several factions, the clans, each with its strength, weakness and geographical power base. In Dark Ages : Vampires, which you are playing now, we are following the undead world at the crossroad of several major crisis. The sack of Constantinople has happened, and broken the major Cainite Empire of the time, having a ripple effect as far as France and Persia. Meanwhile, the Church Inquisition is gathering support and information, almost ready to usher the age of retribution on the cursed bloodsuckers...

1230-bookmark-15-characters.png

1230 AD: "The War of Princes" is the period of conflict in Cainite history that began shortly after the fall of Constantinople to the Fourth Crusade in 1204. The term refers to the conflicts over territory that the various princes of Europe fought after the end of the Long Night. The War of Princes began shortly before the Inquisition was formed. Although the Inquisitors were initially used as tools by the elders, they soon became a greater threat to the Cainites than the Cainites were to one another. Although it is not clear exactly when the War of Princes ended, it would have likely been forced to a conclusion with the advent of the Anarch Revolt, if not sooner. Will you be able to win conclusively the War before the mortals start their uprising against their rightful masters?

This is the successor mod to Princes of Darkness for Crusader Kings II. Same team has developed both mods.

First, some eye candy to lure you in.

We used more saturated and darker color palette for vampire fashion. Start of our custom textures with the Knights of the Black Cross and our Nosferatu and Cappadocian portraits.

1598980951797.png

We also customized the event backgrounds for a perpetual night time setting:

1598999265979.png

We darkened the map and added a lot more mist for the spooky terrain effect:

Since there is no links on character portraits to biographies of canon characters from the White Wolf Wiki, we took a different approach that allows a character to use learning to delve into the past of the ancients and perhaps come away with some secrets.

1598993559161.png

At the minimal level, clans are represented by traits. However, there is a great Jyhad among the clans. An Eternal Struggle by the Methuselah offspring of the Antediluvians conspire to make their houses the dominant in the clan (dynasty). Nearly all large domains on the map are divided among our more than a thousand canon characters that can trace their bloodlines back to the Methuselah founders and thus all the way back to the mythical first vampire--Caine.

1598994208908.png

1598994226613.png

Houses have modifiers that provide bonuses and maluses. Every house has a different combination.

1599003665528.png

We have a lot of houses, each has their own custom Coat of Arms:

newcoa-revenant-inquisition.png

Larger image here.

Vampires can expand their power by embracing other mortals into their state of damnation. Their undead childer are recognized as their heirs by kindred society.

1598994330040.png

Not all mortals are equal. Every so often, an extraordinary figure strides out of history and attracts the attention of the Kindred. Great rebels, great scholars, great warriors, great lovers and great monsters are among those great people who will make excellent childer or particularly tasty snacks!

1598994419351.png

Vampires have powers! Vampires feed on human blood which contains resonance based on their personalities. Blood fuels discipline usage, but resonance allows the development of greater powers in a discipline. If you want to develop certain powers, you must hunt for certain resonances.

1599003149336.png

1599003190277.png

Once you've developed a discipline, then you can start using its powers as character interactions:

1599002801961.png

1599002764498.png

1599002824565.png

Our Lifestyle Perks for disciplines give a variety of bonuses. That said, we have been able to add some powers:. So far:
  • Presence: Summon : Bring a character to your court
  • Presence: Entrancement : Gives a temporary opinion bonus from the target
  • Dominate: Rationalize : Get a hook on the target
  • Animalism: Bond Famulus : Get a pet or a war horse
  • Animalism: Animal Dominion : Summon Animals : spawn an army of creatures
  • Protean/Vicissitude/Blood Sorcery/Oblivion: Shapeshift (various forms) : various bonuses and maluses.
  • Oblivion: Spawn Zombu and Shades : spawned army
  • Vicissitue: Spawn Szlatcha and Vozhd : spawn army
  • Celerity/Fortitude/Potence: Offer Draught : bonus bestowed on your vassals or courtiers. Perfect to give your champions a bigger edge.

    1599002856109.png

We also have a variety of Schemes and Personal Character Interactions available to all vampires.

  • Blood Heal : recover from various wounds
  • Blood Surge : temporary stat boost
  • Find Mortals : spawn mortals in your court that can be eaten or recruited
  • Hunt Mortal : hunt a mortal for blood. Blood fuels discipline powers and provides resonance (lifestyle XP) for discipline advancement.
  • Drain Animal: if your blood potency is low enough, get blood from animals rather than hunting humans.
  • Embrace Mortal: turn a mortal into your vampiric childer and heir.
  • Investigate: Get a biography on a canon character (145 so far), potentially discover some secrets about them
  • Blood Bond : get a weak or strong hook on the target
  • Diablerize : lower generation, increase blood potency, acquire a discipline. Be branded a criminal. Be hated by others. Have s struggle with the soul of your victim over control of your own body. Potentially lose some of your own personality to have it replaced by personality traits of the victim.

    1599002880335.png

There is still a lot more to do. We've made a very good start!

You can also exsanguinate mortal prisoners, and diablerize vampire prisoners.

Kindred have their own method of governance. While it is similar to feudalism, they claim their Traditions date back to Caine himself and the first city of Enoch. Since ancient times, princes and vassals are often looking for "creative" interpretations of the rules for their own advantage.

1598997296675.png

Vampire society is not only governed by contract, but also by the Roads of Enlightenment (religion) and their many Paths (faith):

1598997358094.png

Which also define the range of acceptable behavior: what is permitted, what is shunned and what warrants destruction of the inhuman monsters that vampires inevitably become.

1598997417662.png

No matter how humanely the Kindred may struggle to hold onto morality, in the end it will not save them from Gehenna, the final nights and the end of everything. The omens are everywhere.

1599006948870.png

1598997491321.png

Gehenna is at hand.

Wow, either you work fast, or you had early access, lol. Regardless, it all looks impressive and is a testament to how user-friendly CKIII modding is at launch.

This is quite impressive. I am glad to see this being realized in CK3, and so early, too.

That said, do you have a version number, a changelog, or some other kind of overview which features are already in and which are not? If you'll eventually be able to, for instance, use disciplines as a decision against other vampires, but that's not in yet, I'd rather wait till that's completed.

  • Celerity/Fortitude/Potence: Offer Draught : bonus bestowed on your wounds

There is still a lot more to do. We've made a very good start!

You can also exsanguinate mortal prisoners, and diablerize vampire prisoners.

We think many patrons will find a good place for themselves with interesting perks between these two extremes. We already have two Methuselahs!

This mod is fantastic!
After the embrace, someone is of my house but not my child/e or attached to anyone on the tree, is this intended and there's something to take them into your family later?

If you are playing a female character, that's sadly "intended" right now. Set_mother doesn't exist as a command so we can't do anything about it. The good news is that it should be added by PDX in an upcoming patch.

Also, since they are in your house, they should be available as an heir for succession so you won't "Game Over".
