The Dark Ages--a whole lot darker. Play Crusader Kings 2 as an immortal vampire, a savage werewolf or more! Not some fledgling bloodsucker or young cub though--you are a master of a realm, the lord of a supernatural domain, Prince of the city! Ghoul your courtiers, embrace new vampires to forge a dynasty and try to live forever!

This mod is inspired by Vampire: the Requiem, Vampire: the Masquerade, Dark Ages: Vampire, etc...

You can play both in the new World of Darkness with Vampire the Requiem or the classic World of Darkness with Vampire: the Masquerade and Dark Ages: Vampire. In the future, we will expand into Werewolf, Mage, Wraith, Changeling and Hunters.

Last updated on Steam September 7, 2019. This works with CK2 3.2.1 (Iron Century)

Princes of Darkness team put a lot into the mod since over the last few months and we just released a major update. There are more than 800 canon characters. The base mod is Princes of Darkness does not require any DLC but Conclave, Legacy of Rome, Monks and Mystics DLC is recommended but not required. There is the optional sub mod Princes of Darkness Units which makes a very broad use of all Paradox graphical unit/avatar DLC to greatly diversify super natural special troops; its highly recommended but again requires all CK2 unit packs, content packs and expansions that bring in more unit avatars.

You can get both the mod and the units submod on steam or github. We will also be updating our moddb listing.

Princes of Darkness version 0.4.5. The update for CK 3.1.0 , compatible for Holy Fury and Great Works!

This update has a new system for maintaining the Masquerade! Maintaining the Silence of Blood was one of the Traditions of the Dark Ages and came into primary importance with the events of the Anarch Revolt and Inquisition to become the most important tradition of the Camarilla.
  • Watch the Masquerade Exposure of yourself, your dynasty and your vassals.
  • Fund massive cover ups. Will you tutor other kindred on the Masquerade, or will you enforce it as a tyrant?
  • Focus on reducing your own Masquerade exposure.
  • Declare a Blood Hunt on vassals of other dynasties who have been exposed to imprison them or revoke their titles.
  • See your Masquerade exposure rise as you invoke the more vulgar powers of the blood .
  • Undesirable traits like arbitrary will cause exposure to increase, 'desirable' traits like paranoid will improve the Masquerade.
  • Erase memories of mortals who have seen too much to protect the Masquerade, or to be even more sure... kill them.
  • You may chose to completely ignore the Masquerade, but you will face hunter attacks if you fail to keep the Masquerade in your realm. The Shadow Inquisition, Akritai, Ilkhwan al-Safa and Judges are on the hunt for the Damned!

(for those familiar, we have re-purposed the Muslim Decadence system which was unused in the mod to make it a primary mechanic of Vampire game play)
Holy Fury introduced Bloodlines mechanics! Then Paradox announced they were publishing the successor to Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines! Bloodlines2! We are so excited! So excited that we made 165 bloodlines! There is a list of bloodlines in the mod wiki.

You can forge new bloodlines as well. One way to do so is by founding a major new sect like the Camarilla or the Sabbat!

Holy Fury also brought us Warrior societies and dueling. We have adapted the mod to those features as well.

The Einhejar, the Yasaq of the Anda and various Cainite Knightly Orders are now organized as warrior societies.

Dueling was expanded to give special options to Vampire victors for the fates of their vanquished foes. Staking is an option, which is the perfect thing to prohibit those sneaky elders from escaping your dungeons.

The Kindred plots where your character takes the lead are now resolved through duels, rather than a combination of Generation, Age and combat rating.

With the release of Vampire Fifth Edition, we are picking and choosing what features to adapt to the mod. One of the features we are adapting is predator types. Vampire characters will chose their preferred hunting method and prey. This has an impact on their traits, disciplines, opinions and the risk of Masquerade exposure. You may even get a new prominent member of your herd or a ghoul. Use of Predator Types is optional and be disabled by a Game Rule. There is a list of Predator Types in the mod's wiki.

Vampire republics are back! At 1230 start, there are number of Vampire Primogen Republics around the Mediterranean

Change Log:

Version 0.4.5.3

Compatible with CK2 version 3.2.1

Coat of Arms Infernal Update by Hastur Nyoghtha and flintsparc:
- Black Spiral Danders
- Baali
- Molochim, created Order of Moloch religion just to access new Molochim CoA. More animosity between Nergalites and Molochim.
- In Hermetic custom, Tremere clan dynasties are prefaced with "bani". For game play purposes: Etrius, Meerlinda and LeDuc have their own CoA and respective dynasties.
- A few event pictures

Most of this work by karde:

Summer Hot Fixes for Gihub :

- Fixed some missing Iberian holdings.
- Kingdom of Jerusalem now available to anything other than Ashirra and Salubri.
- For now, commented out Sparc's Malfeas experiment which isn't ready yet and was freaking out the error log.
- Fixed some problematic technology level triggers. All buildings should be available as intended now.
- Vampires shouldn't care about kinslaying anymore. They are only one big happy family anyway.
- Fixed a bunch of missed scripting triggers from IC. Should help stability.
- Eased the requirement for the lord spiritual job which should help finding a proper candidate.
- Fixed some remaining edge cases where killing millenia old apocalypse machines in a epic duel was considered "dishonorable".

Building Faith Patch:

- Haqim is back into torpor. You can sleep (mostly) safe once again.
- For readability issues, Diablerie trait changed to a flat -5 diplomacy and - 0.5monthly piety/loyalty malus. Auspex only used to see the actual trait, everyone feels something off when encountering a diabolist.
- Bloodbound opinion bonus nerfed to +50 (was +100).
- Clarified the religious conversion mechanic. You can now only ask for and receive conversion if you are of the "true" vampiric religion. Everything else will convert back to his "clan religion" as intended. The "true religions" are : Anarchs/Furores/Inconnu/Einherjar (after reform only)/Anda/Setite/Baali/Promethean/Cainite Heresy/Autarkis. A "Traditions" Government can also never ask for conversion of his subjects since it means you are working under the laws of Caine (no religion).
- Clan Religion AI will now aggressively convert provinces of the "True Religion" kind but still won't care about other clan religions. "True Religion" AI will aggressively convert provinces and characters of any other religion.
- A court chaplain of the "Clan Religion" kind won't try to convert courtiers anymore (which led to a prestige death spiral for the AI as the conversion was rolled back by event later). "True religion" chaplain will still try to convince people of the glory of Set/Third Caine/Baal/Breaking the Ventrue chains.
- Reworked the government setup to go with that. There are now more cults/unaligned governments in the world, letting the possibility for, as an example, a total conversion of Europe to the cainite heresy by a resurgent See of Nod (if they survive the first five years for once, anyway).
- Goratrix has memory issues. His bloodline is now only +5 Learning (from +10).
- The Sabbat mercs aren't active centuries before the Sabbat exists anymore. Time Travelling Vampires begone.
- Buildings have been overhauled. The goal is less mindless clicking, less gold and tech bloom. Buildings now also cost prestige or piety.
- Buildings have been made into several branches with specific and clear benefits for each of them. You can find extensive infos on them in the wiki : https://github.com/peregrine-collegia/POD/wiki/Buildings
- Cities are your center of power, giving you gold, prestige, piety and tech but mostly low level troops.
- Castles are where your elite troops come from. But with almost no gold/prestige/piety generating building, they can't be sustained without working cities.
- Temples are useful for the following clans : Nosferatu/Malkavian/Baali/Cappadocian/Lasombra/Tzimisce/Setite/Tremere. They have buildings giving troops and some tech for these clans.
- Dominate gives an additional building to each branch, providing crappy troops. (You can now condition your orphans/nurses/students/politicians into mindless light infantry. Don't thank me.)
- Some terrain features will provide additional buildings. Like mines for a castle on a mountain province.
- AI will now prioritize troops giving building at the expanse of tech generation (it was the other way around before).
- Bloodlines giving buildings now properly work. Corrected some other malfunctioning bloodlines.
- Populated Cities (the ones with a pop building) are now much more powerful. Expect any vampire holding one to punch far above his weight.
- Reduced technology levels across the board at start.
- Made Cairo a tributary to the Setites to avoid the now utterly terrifying duchy of Cairo (250K pop city) going for a world conquest too quickly.
- Deleted the hopelessly outdated and hopefully (now) useless Autobuild mod from Github to avoid confusion.

Stealing Valhalla Patch :

- Added new portraits by Hastur.
- Fixed doubling Lhiannan bloodline.
- Nerfed Dracon -5000% build cost bloodline.
- Via Hyron is no longer secret (should work properly now).
- Added the possibility to reform for the Einherjar religion. It follows Vanilla's rules and reforms possibilities.
- Reworked the Einherjar objective as a stepping stone to reform. It is now way easier, less rewarding, but also gives precious religious authority to help reform.
- Triggers changed for the introduction events which should make them trigger only once now.
- Included a slimmed down version of the "Steal artifact decision" mod (with the gracious permission of Auirus!). For now, you can use a decision to steal artifact from your captives or engage in a longer (and quite risky) theft against the treasure of a foreign ruler.
- Rebalanced the " Seed of Rebellion " modifier to still be nasty, but not last for 500 years at least.
- Added new Court Size/Great Works/Iron Century patch game rules.
- Added Sardinian and Sloveni cultures from Iron Century.

Minor Patch:
- Fixed the 1230 map setup for Iberia and Egypt to account for Iron Century's new provinces.
- Fixed moving baronies and missing tech levels due to Iron Century's new setup.
- Halved the CD on "learn discipline by favor" decision. But still not 100% sure that there isn't a problem with this part of the code causing unintended delays.
- Punk: werewolf form abomination fix

World of Darkness

1142 CE Nacht Reich
(VTR/WTF/WOD)

The age of sprawling vampiric empires. With the destruction of the Black Abbey, the Lancea et Sanctum ceases to be a moderating influence among the Kindred. The Invictus rise to challenge the Adamantes Athanatoi for control of Europe and Anatolia. Will the Camarilla be restored? Based on the new World of Darkness, Vampire: the Requiem and Werewolf:the Forsaken.

1250 CE Final Council of the Invictus Empire
(VTR/WTF/WOD)

After only a hundred years, the Heiligen Nacth Reich dissolves. The pretext was a dispute between Invictus guilds of Florence and Pisa, but in truth the Kindred princes throughout the empire demanded independence to pursue their private wars against each other. The Nacht Kaiser abdicated. The Final Council’s decisions were simple. The Council accepted the abdication of the Nacht Kaiser and dissolved the title. All Electors renounced those titles and renounced any idea of a central government for the Invictus. Instead, the Electors would return to running city fiefs as individual realms, so that a Guild recognized in one city had no claim vis-à-vis a Guild recognized in another. This a shattered world, with every county starting independent. Based on the new World of Darkness, Vampire: the Requiem and Werewolf:the Forsaken.

Classic World of Darkness

1230 CE War of Princes
(DAV/VTM/WTA/CWOD)

1505 CE Convention of Thorns
(VTM/CWOD)

Several Antediluvians have met the final death: Saulot, Lasombra, Tzimisce and Cappadocius. The Toreador Rafeal de Corazon makes his famous speech which leads to the Camarilla and the Masquerade. The Camarilla declare a bloodhunt against the clan Assamite. The Montmartre Pact creates peace for the Tremere with the Gangrel and Nosferatu--in exchange for destruction of the gargoyle creation rite and release of all gargoyles. The 'End' of the first Anarch Revolt happens with the signing of the Convention of Thorns. Malkavian Methesulahs hold The Great Prank which allows their clan to join the Camarilla. Many remaining anarchs refuse to agree to the Convention of Thorns and instead form The Sabbat. The Treaty of Tyre ends of the Camarilla bloodhunt against the Assamites. Based on the classic World of Darkness and Vampire: the Masquerade.

How do I embrace a vampire?

You may embrace up to five mortals. Select a mortal of your court. Go to the diplomacy screen. Award honorary title. Embrace mortal. The mortal will transform into a fledgling and then quickly become a vampire of your clan with you as their parent.

How do I ghoul a mortal?

You may ghoul up to five mortals. Select a mortal of your court. Go to the diplomacy screen. Award honorary title. Ghoul. The mortal will transform into a ghoul. Warning: if you grant a landed title to a ghoul, it is likely that another supernatural creature will usurp that title.

How do I increase vampire disciplines?

Increasing the power of vampire disciplines costs prestige. The decisions to increase vampire discipline power is found at the intrigue screen.

How do I bloodbind another vampire?

You may only bloodbind prisoners. The decision to bloodbind a vampire is found under the intrigue screen and called "Bloodbind Vampire". This will increase the bound vampire's opinion of you by 100 points. This is not regarded as a tyrannical act. A vampire may only be bound to one domitor. Bloodbind is also called a "Blood Oath". Be sure that you are blood binding the right vampire. Every vampire prisoner has a different "Bloodbind Vampire" decision.

How do I diablerize another vampire?

You may only diablerize vampire prisoners. The decision to diablerize a vampire (or drain a mortal) is found under the intrigue screen and called "Diablerize Vampire". This is always tyrannical act which will increase negative opinion of your vassals. You will also gain the "diabolist" trait which will also generate a negative opinion. So why diablerize? It is a fast way to increase blood potency (rather than waiting on average 50 years to increase one rank of potency). Be sure that you are diablerizing the right vampire. Every vampire prisoner has a different "Diablerize Vampire" decision.

How do I increase werewolf gifts?

Increasing the power of werewolf gifts costs piety. The decisions to increase werewolf gift power is found at the intrigue screen.

All the randomly generated characters are wrong. They don't have any supernatural traits. Why does the game slow down on January 21st?

It takes some time for new characters to get assigned their mortal/supernatural traits by event. At start up, the majority of these traits are assigned on or around January 21st of the start year. When a new character is created (such as through the employment steward/present debutante decision) it will take a few days for an event to trigger to assign them mortal/supernatural traits.

The game will seem to almost slow to a halt on January 21st, but it will resume regular speed within about thirty seconds. Just wait for it to proces[s--don't pause the game.

The empire/king tier vassal holdings seem smaller than they should be and wrong. Why is that?

This usually occurs because the player has clicked on two ore more bookmark dates before hitting play. The game doesn't gracefully handle jumping between bookmarks on the loading screen. To avoid this, restart the game and select only the bookmark you want to play and hit "play" button.

We will try to compensate for this limitation by providing indepth information and maps about each bookmark here in the wiki.

What are the clan differences between World of Darkness (WOD) vs. Classic World of Darkness (CWOD)?

The World of Darkness(WOD)/Vampire: the Requiem has five principle clans: Daeva, Gangrel, Mekhet, Nosferatu and Ventrue. The Classic World of Darkness(CWOD)/Vampire: the Masquearde had thirteen principle clans: Assasmite, Brujah, Gangrel, Giovanni, Lasombra, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Ravnos, Settite, Toreador, Tremere, Tzimisce, Ventrue. In Dark Ages: Vampire the thirteen principle clans are Assasmite, Brujah, Cappadocian (of which the Giovanni are a bloodline), Gangrel, Lasombra, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Ravnos, Settite, Toreador, Tremere, Tzimisce, Ventrue--Tremere have only just recently usurped the position of the Salurbri.

In WOD, the Daeva are the equivalent of the Toreador (and Toreador is a Spanish Davea bloodline). The Mekhet are an amalgamation of the "sneaky vampire" including elements from Settites, Lasombra and Giovanni. The Khaibit are Mekhet bloodline inspired by the Settites; while the Sangiovanni are a Mekhet bloodline inspired by the Giovanni clan. The Bruja are now a Gangrel bloodline. Malkavians inspired the Malkov bloodline of Ventrue (and Ventrue are far more likely to development derangement than other clans). In the 1142/1250 bookmarks, we are using the Lasombra and Tzimisce as Latin and Slavic Ventrue dynasties. We make active use of bloodline names with the CK2 dynasty mechanics. VII/The Betrayed clans are represented by clan/dynasty bloodlines--but not the CK2 religious mechanics. Some CWOD bloodlines, ghoul families and covenants have a role as mercenaries/holy orders in the mod.

What are the covenant/sect differences between World of Darkness vs. Classic World of Darkness?

The World of Darkness/Vampire: the Requiem makes a large use of covenants. In the 1142/1250 bookmarks we are using Lancea Sanctum, Invictus, Circle of the Crone, Unaligned, Adamantes Athanatoi, al-Amin, Banu Shaitan, and the Forsworn (various Belial's Brood cults: The Nameless, The Mercy Seat, The Roaring Serpent, Pandaemonium, Throne of Smokeless Fire). We make active use of the CK2 religious mechanic to represent the various covenants. VII/The Betrayed clans are represented by clan/dynasty bloodlines--but not the CK2 religious mechanics.

For werewolves, we also use the The Forsaken, The Pure and Balehounds as three large religion groups--with the various tribes as religions such as: Blood Talons, Bone Shadows, Ghost Wolves, Hunters in Darkness, Iron Masters, Storm Lords, Fire-Touched, Predator Kings, Ivory Claws and Balehounds again. We have associated some tribes with certain cultures--but not exclusively so. Blood Talons (North Germanic), Bone Shadows (Berber, Egyptian), Hunters in Darkness (Bedouin), Iron Masters (Pommeranian, Dutch, German), Storm Lords (Russian), Fire-Touched (Altaic), Predator Kings (Finno-Ugric), Ivory Claws (Indo-Aryan, Persian, Anatolian Turk, Mordvin) and Balehounds (Scottish, Irish). This isn't exclusively so because the tribes have existed stretching back since time immemorial. Storm Lords and Ivory Claws will pop up trying to lead tribes of Forsaken or Pure respectively, Iron Masters will try to embrace new ways, Ghost Wolves will reject any tribe, and the Balehounds can corrupt any lupine.

In CWOD 1230 bookmark, the Camarilla and Sabbat are yet to form. The covenants that exist are more informal. The Cainite Sects are: the Autarkis, the Prometheans, the Magnus Nigrum, the Furores and the Inconnu. The largest division, however, is between the High Clans (Brujah, Cappadocian, Lasombra, Toreador, Tzimisce and Ventrue) and the Low Clans (Assamites, Followers of Set, Gangrel, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Ravnos and Tremere). Covenants will make use of CK2 religious mechanics.

Islamic kindred share the Ashirra sect. Some clans have their own covenants, namely: Assamites, Settites and Tremere. We have also expanded some bloodlines into covenants. The Norse Gangrel Einherjar, the steppe nomadic Gangrel Anda, the Finno-Ugric Gangrel Noiad, the Slavic Tzimisce Koldun and the various Indian castes are grouped together by the Ravnos into castes as the Mayaparisatya

Some prominent Courts & Fiefdoms are the primary political affiliations of characters; and will use the realm political mechanics of CK2. They are: the Fiefs of the Black Cross, Baronies of Avalon, the Courts of Love, the Sea of Shadows, and the Voivodate. These political groupings will be used by both the 1230 bookmark, and also where appropriate in the 1142 bookmark (which swaps the Fiefs of the Black Cross for Invictus.)

What about the Camarilla?

In the new World of Darkness/Vampire: the Requiem; the Camarilla refers to the ancient Roman empire Kindred Society which is well detailed in Requiem for Rome and Fall of the Camarilla books. They do not appear in the 1142/1250 bookmarks--however some bloodlines are present. In the future, there may be a Requiem for Rome/Fall of the Camarilla Bookmark; as well as a Byzantium bookmark.

In the old World of Darkness/Vampire: the Masquerade; the Camarilla isn't formed until after the Inquisition and thus after the 1230 bookmark date. The 1505 bookmark is after the Convention of Thorns, Code of Milan and the Treaty of Tyre when the Camarilla, Sabbat and Anarch covenants exist in something similar to their modern form. The Giovanni also have their own independent sect.

Sometimes, mod developers may make use of character histories from various Live Action Role-Playing (LARP) game chronicles from the Mind's Eye Theater society--previous known as "The Camarilla". The Old Camarilla Wiki and the Mind's Eye Society Wiki are great resources.

Where are the Werewolf Dynasties from?

Norse/North Germanic: Úlfhéðnar, Hróðvitnir, Mánagarmr, Kveldulf, Hati, Sköll, Geri, Freki, Garmr
German: Wulfhroc "Wolf-Frock", Wolfhetan "Wolf-Hide", Isangrim "Grey-Mask", Scrutolf "Garb-Wolf", Wolfgang "Wolf-Gait", Wolfdregil "Wolf-Runner", Vulfolaic "Wolf-Dancer"
Anglo-Saxon: Wulfhere, Cynewulf, Ceonwulf, Wulfheard, Earnwulf, Wulfmǣr, Wulfstān and Æthelwulf
Russian/Slavic: Bryachislavich, Bodark, Oborot, Wawkalak, Vlkodlak
Finno-Ugric: Susi, Hukka
Lithuanian: Skalmantas founder of the Gediminids
Frankish/Occitan: Bisclavret
Roman/Italian: Capitolium/Campidoglio, Cerberus, Orthrus
Greek: Lykaios, Kerberos, Orthros, Leukippes, Isthemene
Mongolian: Chonos
Altaic/Turkish: Ashina
Indian: (Descendants of Bhima the Wolf-Stomached/Vrikodara) Sutasoma, Malavas, Ghatotkacha, Barbarika, Sarvaga
Please give us your suggestions for more werewolf dynasties, particularly for cultures without dynasties. Also, we are curious to know the ten children of Asena (the nine siblings of Ashina) and/or the siblings of Bumin Qagan and Istami. We also need werewolf dynasties for Berber, Bedouin, Levantine and Egyptian Arabic.

What are these new eastern covenants for Requiem?

While several dynasties were named in Ancient Mythologies/Ancient Bloodlines for India, there was not any information related to covenants outside of a simple caste system. Mod developers created covenants based on inversions of traditional religions in the area: Prati-vasudeva-dharma (Jainism), Asura-dharma (Buddhism) and Mara-dharma. In Persia, we have an inversion of Zoroastrianism--Aka Manah, the religion of the Daeva. Jewish and Samaritan vampires are combined into Shedim(Lilithian)--which later join the Lancea Sanctum as the Dammatic Creed, the Livian Hersey, or the Circle of the Crone.

Looks cool. Two questions about ruler designer features:

why are so many clan traits unavailable? For example the Lasombra and the Giovanni. First ones that came in my mind.
And why do the discipline and blood potency traits appear irregularly in the ruler designer? Once they do, another time they don't...
Is it because I enabled the other clan traits and added two lines in POD_names? Did I screw up the whole mod?

Rule designer needs to be updated for classic World of Darkness. I'll need to take another look at it and overhaul it.

Ah, alright!

Any plans on a website or anything? I didn't see one in the original post other than a link to the earlier discussions/dev diary, and I definitely want to be able to keep tabs on this mod. This was, literally, what I spent last night learning how to mod for, so it's cool someone else got onto it before I did.

Training disciplines doesn't seem to be working for me; takes the prestige by nothing changes besides that, as well I Classic World of Darkness doesn't seem to be allowing to increase generation by drinking down on your elders. Really awesome though, and it might just be on my end. Will mess around some with it.

Not just on your end. Same issue here.

The fix for this is relatively easily. I should get to it tonight and update the download. However, using rule designer to make a custom vampire might be tricky. For both classic World of Darkness and new World of Darkness, you will need to have a bloodpotency trait. In CWOD, I've limited how high it can go based on how low your generation. If you are setting up a classic world of Darkness vampire, you will need to also have a generation trait. Be careful on picking religions or clans too... because you might end up very lonely with less casus belli.

I and flint coded it so that when you take a train discipline decision you are supposed to start training. You need to wait a variable number of years to fullfil the training. The plan was that in future versions you receive flavour events related to the discipline learning process.
I took out the delay, etc... but I may have to revisit it. I know the NPCs weren't raising their disciplines.
