REQUIREMENTS
The Portrait Realignment Pack's main mod requires ownership of all the portrait and clothing DLCs. The individual modules have their own unique set of requirements. You can view specific requirements in PDF file that is included in the download.

INSTALLATION
Unzip these files into your /mod subdirectory of your CK2 user directory, something like <your user documents>\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\mod. This will give you access to the "Portrait Realignment Pack" mod when you launch the game. If you would like to pick and choose specific realignments, move the corresponding mod(s) of interest from the /prp_modules/core or /prp_modules/extras subdirectories and place them your /mod directory. This means you need to move the .mod file and the corresponding subdirectory (i.e. Realign_Norse.mod and /realign_norse).

ACTIVATION
When you get to the CK2 launch window, you should see "Portraits Realignment Pack" listed in the bottom left corner along with any mods you moved out of the subdirectories. If not, then reread the installation instructions. Otherwise check the mod(s) you want to use in the launcher. Also be sure to check any DLCs that the mod requires in the bottom right corner. Launch the game.

TROUBLESHOOTING
1) Some of the character portraits appear naked, black, or empty.
This means that the game can't find certain graphics assets. Possible problems include:
A) You don't own or haven't activated the required DLC(s)
B) The dds (image) are missing/improperly named due to a mod installation issue or error on my part
C) The spritetype definitions are missing or have an error due to a mod installation issue or error on my part
D) The portrait definitions have an error that I have committed
If you are confident that it isn't a DLC or mod installation issue, please contact me to look into the matter.

2) The game crashes when you click on a province or scroll through the Character Finder window.
More than likely, you lack the necessary graphics files for a mod that you selected. Check the requirements and installation sections of this document and see if they can help identify the issue. Try loading an individual mod rather than "Portrait Realignment Pack." This will help you pin down which mod is causing you grief.

3) I have the necessary DLCs loaded but the game still crashes.
Are you running any mods outside this pack? The mod alters 00_cultures.txt and 00_graphicalculturetype.txt. This means that it will not be compatible with any other mods that also change this file. If you are using any mod outside of this pack that also modifies these files, errors may possibly arise.

4) I didn't receive any errors, but the portraits didn't change in the game.
This usually indicates that the game cannot locate the directory that the .mod file is pointing to. Did you rename the mod's subdirectory or forget to copy it into your /mod directory?

5) Clothing is misaligned such that I'm getting half of one hat and half of another.
This almost always indicates that there's an improper definition of the number of clothes/hat/etc in a dds file. PRP's sprite definitions should be up to date for the patch the mod is designed for. If you are using an older patch, then this probably explains your problem. If you're using the current patch, then please post in the thread so that it can get corrected.

6) The mouths, eyes, ears, and/or noses of characters are floating off in space!
In patch 2.1.3, Paradox reduced the file size of the images for eyes, ears, noses, and mouths. To account for this, the gfx files need an offset declaration. PRP uses the new system and includes declarations for an offset. It assumes that your vanilla game has the shrunk dds image files. If you're seeing floating body parts, then you are probably running an old version of the game with a new PRP or vice-versa.

7) The characters' faces for particular culture look western European, but they shouldn't.
More than likely, you are missing the necessary graphicalculturetype definition associated with that culture. Make sure you aren't missing any files from <mod>/common/graphicalculturetype.

8) I don't see my problem!
I am happy to help if you can answer the following questions. Answering everything will significantly expedite getting an answer.
  1. What patch version of CK2 do you have?
  2. What version of the Portrait Realignment Pack do you have?
  3. Which PRP mod(s) are you running when you start the game?
  4. Do you own every single portrait DLC? If not, which ones don't you own?
  5. Are you running any other mod(s) with PRP? If so, which one(s)? Does the problem persist when you don't run those mod(s)?
  6. What, precisely, is the problem? I need every detail you can provide.
  7. Can you share a screenshot of your problem?

REUSE
Anyone may feel free to reuse this work in their own mods. Just please give me credit when you do so. And if you wouldn't mind, give me a heads up too. It's nice to know when other people find your stuff valuable :).

MIXING WITH OTHER MODS
Many smaller mods will work with PRP without issue. Others will require some file adjustments to run smoothly. Otherwise, you are left on your own to integrate PRP with other mods. Fortunately, combining this mod with another mod is a straightforward process if you are comfortable moving files around and doing some minor text file editing. There are a few files that I modify which are core game files that ship with the vanilla version of the game:
  • 00_cultures.txt, located in /common/cultures
  • 00_graphicalculturetype.txt, located in /common/graphicalculturetypes
  • portrait_properties.txt, located in /interface
Check the mod directory of the mod(s) you want to merge with PRP. If any of these files are present, then you will need to rectify any differences between them and those provided in PRP. The changes quite minor on my end.

I recommend you use a text differencing tool like kdiff or WinMerge to see the changes in these three text files versus whatever the other mod(s) did. Probably the easiest thing is to move my changes over to the other mods' content. Once you've done that, take all the other files in PRP's mod folders and paste them into your new, merged mod. Voila.

SUGGESTED OTHER MODS
These are graphical mods that are known to be compatible with PRP. I personally like them and would recommend you use in tandem with this mod. They don't change the game's checksum, so they work with Ironman/multiplayer.

Hi Miko19,
I have sent the owner of that mod an inquiry as to reuse of his/her work. There's certainly a lot of good stuff in there, but I can't arbitrarily take things from others. But you have reminded me that I need to leave a note about reuse of this mod. Feel free to do as you will with it...just give credit if you republish.

Looking pretty good! Already had a look at the Better Looking Characters mod? The modder himself has left quite awhile ago but he added loads and loads of clothing, helmets and so on. Would be awesome to see that make a return.

Thanks Trashed! Yes, I have seen the BLC mod. I know how to make more intricate portrait mods, and have done so for myself based on BLC, crackedtoothgrin's work, and others. The challenge is that making more intricate mods requires constant updating for each patch, which quickly becomes exhausting. While it certainly leaves room for improvement, this mod should be extremely easy to maintain.

Perhaps if I get enough encouragement, I will develop a Portrait Realignment Pack Plus :).

Awesome, maestro iron0037 :D

And about the portraits... ho, ho, ho! That's just what I always wanted the face packs to be! P-Dox shouldn't add entirely new faces, but rather add things onto the vanilla ones (skin types, distinct features, etc) along with clothes and various other gimmicks. Which is what you did with the PRP Mod :p

This is precisely the mod I was looking for. I loved the new clothing added in the DLC's but I never cared for the faces themselves. I always felt the Mediterranean and Russian pack to be especially odd. All the Mediterranean faces looked permanently leathery and old while the Russians looked alien.

Thanks again

I hope this mod will be updated until the end of time :)

Wow, looking amazing from what I see in the screenshots there...
Is there any way I can "unselect" certain portraits... So if I only want to replace the female portraits, with the realigned ones?

BTW - can you show a screenshot how the Persians and Ugric will look like then?

I have been holding off on buying Mediterranean and Norse portraits, and have kept my Russian portraits deactivated, but this looks so good I might finally get them.

[edit] Any chance you know you to turn off the magical-disappearing-beard quality of the Russian portraits? Annoys me senseless. I remember someone describing how to in another portrait thread but that was ages ago and I've long since forgotten.

Southern European, Persian, and Ugric screenshots have been added.

Personally, I don't care for the Persians, but I tossed it in there in case someone wants some portrait variety in that part of the world.

I dressed the Ugric cultures semi-randomly in an attempt to give them at least some distinction from default western Europeans. I'm sure that it isn't historically accurate, and I welcome any suggestions for better usage of the existing graphics with this culture. My suspicion is that a DLC will come out in the future to fix them anyway, so this is just a placeholder.

I am unfamiliar with the disappearing beard bug. If you can send me a link on this subject and it's easily fixed, I will fix it.

In the next few days, I will create gender-specific mods for those that want them.

The beard bug is fixed in the portrait fix compilation I suggested to be merged with this a few posts up, so you could ask its author for the way on how to fix it yourself, I suppose.

Oh my God, finally tested it in game - BEST PORTRAIT-MOD SO FAR! Amazing work... Looks SO much better...
I only stumbled across one problem, which I also have seen in other portraitmods... She "chunky" portraits sometimes have some graphical issues on the right side of the face... I post a screenshot here - perhaps you can find a solution?

This is awesome work! A beautiful extension of your previous mod for Mediterranean cultures only.

What do you think should be done with the Turkish and Kurdish cultures? Perhaps to apply the same structure you had for Persians?

And what about recycling the Norse Faces? The Baltic/Ugric peoples may be good candidates for that.

The thing with the beards involves beards and hairstyles switching out for different ones when a Russian character is leading troops.

So this guy,

beardbug1.png

Becomes this guy:

beardbug2.png

Screenshots taken using your mod. I took a look at zebez's portrait fix mod, which Miko19 mentioned, and that does fix it. But I haven't been able to reconcile the two mods, not really knowing what I'm doing.

Thanks a bunch for the mod btw. Been a huge improvement.

This kept crashing for me, but I'll try it again. If I want to run them all, do I need to have all of the mods installed, but just run 'all' or can I just have that mod installed? That's what I did last time, but I thought it worth checking.

Version 1.10b has been uploaded. Details of changes are provided in the first post. Since some of the Portrait Fixes mod's changes were corrections to legitimate bugs, I went ahead and included them. But note that not everything from that mod is in there. Things like changes to the Mongols aren't provided here since I don't alter those graphics files. And all of the changes to the image files are that mod makes are absent.

Gender-specific files are now provided for the cultures I think anyone might reasonably want them. The others don't really make sense to me, so I didn't bother adding them. Let me know how those work out for folks.

As for the "chunky" characters, that's going to take some more work. I'll look into it.

Thanks for all the kind words. It helps keep me motivated to improve things :).
