I'm putting some data together for a naval mod (accurate naval starting OOBs, modding in CVLs, CVEs, MACs, corvettes, frigates and sloops and whatever other ships I can make work without overwhelming the UI/AI) and had been musing over this as well - one thing that could possibly work (in terms of a 'quick and dirty' way) would be if there was a way for a variant option to add to a unit's cost - so the variant system could be seen as building a greater-tonnage ship with more of whatever's being built. You could then have experience given out when someone researched a new model (Porkman's idea, not mine), so they had something to build a varianted ship with.

Another thought was to try and wrangle the division designer into being used to build naval units, but no idea whether we'd have enough control to be able to make this happen.

Deffo would be great to have modular ship-building though :).

Sounds pretty much exactly what I was working on. :D That's why I mentioned maybe just making the bits nobody else does and just making it compatible with a load of recommended others (unless you want to work together on it?). Anyway, those were two of my three ideas for fixes, my third (and probably my main) came from my playing of DH and was to adjust the carrier system so that equipment like seaplanes and torpedo tubes and gun turrets could be "embarked" on ships. Gives a sensible modular way of doing it, should give finer control of the setup than the variant system, and allows a realistic modernisation system. Division designer would be even better, I'm just not sure how possible it would be without having had a peek at the files.

It may be one of the most difficult aspects to work on but we should be able to make focus trees for the major WW1 nations. The smaller window of critical events (4 years, 14-18) should reduce the overall pain of that work.

You inspired me to focus planning for this feature now :D

Yeah, it sounds like it'd be good, and an early years mod would be absolutely great, I just didn't include it because of how hard I think it'd be to integrate it with the later years' focus trees. Actually, the only focus tree I've got at the moment is more of a '32 start focus tree for a country that was created in the interbellum, and I was going to have it just start with the first bit already done.

Anyway, I wish your mod the best of luck, and I'm going to be getting intimately familiar with the focus trees, so if you want any help with that stuff, you're more than welcome to it.

I would also like to see a way, if possible, to allow ship type conversion (ie. BB -> CV). This would allow things like what the Japanese did in converting the Amagi-class battleship, Akagi to a fleet carrier in construction. Also the Yamato-class battleship Shinano was converted to a carrier during construction as well. The USA also converted Cleveland-class cruiser hulls into Independence-class carriers.

Also battle-cruiser to battleship conversion should be possible post construction. This would emulate what the Japanese did with the Kongou class ships.

Aye, I agree conversions would be a 'nice' thing to have, although I don't see them as essential. If it was easy to manage, I'd also like to see it as necessary as to return to port to receive upgrades in equipment (ie, radar/AA), rather than them magically appearing on ships at sea. It just depends how easy it is to work it into the game. The ideas I was looking at (and some discussion of them) are mainly in:

I think I am just hankering for a good Pacific Theater simulator. Return to port for upgrade makes sense if the game can support it. Also some way to differentiate the capabilities of individual ports would be interesting. Not all ports would be equipped to make significant repairs/upgrades. But again, not sure if that is possible.

On a different note. I think expanding the tank model tree to include non-production models might be interesting. For example adding the VK45.01 Tiger(P) as an alternative to the Tiger, with much more armor but reduced reliability (they had a tendency to catch on fire), speed, and worse performance in muddy terrain.

I would like a mod where the different countries real weapons are in effect, ie Bad british tanks, horrible italian, great US strategic bombers and so on. The germans building the Me 262 in 43 long before anyone else, capturing of weapons and night fighters

British tanks being bad is actually a bit of a myth - they were bad at how they used their tanks on numerous occasions, but the tanks they built were competitive (not outstanding in an all-round sense, but often outperforming in certain areas, like the Cromwell's mobility and speed, or the Matilda II's robustness). Similarly, the Me-262 got it's first squadron in April 1944, while the Gloster Meteor got it's first squadron in July 1944 - hardly 'long before'. That said, there's nothing wrong in putting together a 'beefed up Germany' mod or something like that :).

In a sense this is already in the game--you can spend "field experience" upgrading vehicle models into new 'variants' (you can name them yourself ie. Panzer IV Ausf. X etc). Then technically Italian tanks are 'horrible' in comparison to Germany because slower research and no upgraded variants (if AI doesn't makes them?). So the system is flexible yet realistic in that you can manually go historical or ahistorical like most other things (invasion dates, faction members etc). Now we don't know if there are "premade" variants or if the AI makes them, but if they don't--it would be a nice thing to mod.

I would be planning a more integrated commonwealth mod, either by changing some of the UK national focus, or by some other means.
To have sharing of technology, and the ability to build UK kit in commonwealth countries and vica versa. (Canada built UK designed tanks, aircraft, ships, and a shed load of lorries - which were used everywhere by every commonwealth nation).
To have common division patterns and doctrines across the commonwealth, or at least for common wealth countries to be able to opt in.
And to have commonwealth forces operating under a single common command.
For example, in the battle of Britain Keith Park (a new zealander) commanded the RAF over Kent, London, and the south-east, and Quintin Brand (a south african) commanded over the south coast.
The co-operation was far closer than that between the Commonwealth and USA, who were themselves closer than any other pairing of allies.
