Well... Is there a way for Riddermark to beat Saruman?
Playing as Aragorn the second time. It is just impossible to beat this 22000 doomstack! What should I do? Will the event chain continue without winning the war?

I always change the static modifiers a bit for this. I recall reading somewhere that the total as single Eored of Rohan was 120 men and the Eohere, the full muster, was 12000 riders. I usually change the values to reflect this by giving Rohan stronger cavalry(Gondorian based but not changing anything else aside from cavalry) and dividing their numbers by half.

Edit: Found it. http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Éoherë

Attention: We are considering restarting the mod and we need new members!

Greetings fellow forumites. As you might know, we are not in good situation now because many founding members have left us or are inactive. Work on the mod is effectively halted now. Our current codebase is not really clear and there are many strange things in our code, which makes it really hard to continue with current codebase, especially for new members. Because of these facts, we are considering restarting the mod completely - rewriting rewritting it from scratch, except for things like map, graphics, parts of localisation, traits, etc.

However, to be able to do so, we NEED YOUR HELP!
It doesn't matter whether you are experienced or not, as long as you want to help ;).
We need scripters, graphics guys, loremasters... Everyone, really :)

If you want to join the adventure, just send me a PM and I will contact you as soon as possible :)

Mostly you need scripters - and scripters that are productive ;)

The mod is fine when it comes to the map and characters for the most part, but yes, much of the work done previously on the event scripting side is mine - and I know it's a mess, since I was a new modder when I worked on it.

So I agree that in many ways it'll be easier for a new team to get together and start building their own stuff which they can maintain and update, rather than just look at some of the old events with a puzzled expression and wonder why it doesn't work :D

I also suggest a start date some 20 years before the War of the Ring, where most of the important characters are still alive, but you won't need to start wtih a heavily scripted war of the ring event chain/scenario.

Good luck!

Would be fun to try making the first age mod first hmm? :D
First age mod will be fun, but I think that we need to have stable, interesting and somewhat complete Third Age mod before doing First Age one, as LoTR is more popular that Silmarillion in my opinion :). However, when we have enough manpower, then we can surely try to make First Age ;)

I agree with Blood Royal that starting at a new bookmark a few years before the War of the Ring would probably be for the best; unfortunately, I cannot offer either skills or time to help myself.

In terms of making the game more compatible with vanilla mechanics, wouldn't having a bookmark starting a few months into the War of the Rings be better? Then there'd be less event spam and behind-the-scenes modding going on to prep characters and kingdoms for the war, etc., but there'd also be the possibility to follow the trilogy's canon timeline.

Another thing is that realms like Rohan can now be made tributary status to Gondor, so they are more likely to become allies.

As the person who coded most of the canon and expanded universe characters, I hope you can keep them all in. If there are any troubles to be found in characters, it is likely their birth and death dates don't match, so I would suggest not to change them much, just go through them and make sure they all have birth=yes and death=yes so there is no conflicting of dates. ;)

So one scenario about 20 years before the War of the Ring and one scenario a few months into the War of the Ring would be ideal?

I honestly don't know how you're supposed to beat Saruman with the way its set up. The event chain however does continue. In my playthrough as Aragorn it continued and then as king of Gondor I went back and conquered Isengard and the Riddermark gained its independence with their massive rebels (rebels that were bigger than the force you get for the actual war event) after I had crushed Saruman's army.

Anyone else here familiar with those old MERP books from the 80s?:)

Could provide a lot of excellent (Albeit not entirely lore-accurate, but given a lot of examples and stuff I've seen in the mod... That's not an issue! Just so long as it's fun and semi-accurate or fun. Have I mentioned that fun matters?) event chain and flavor fodder. And scenarios.

The army Theoden was able to muster was only 6000 men in the books. I always found it unrealistic that I was able to gather 22000 men playing as Eomer's son after the war.
That's not entirely illogical, though. The 6000 Théoden takes with him to Gondor are assembled in an awful hurry. I'm positive he even mourns the fact that he needs to move quickly, because he could take twice that number, given a bit more time. The problem is, if he waited, there wouldn't be a Minas Tirith to save, as we saw in canon, what with the arrival of the Éorlingas being the thing that stopped the face off between Gandalf and the Witch King. While 12,000 is still remarkably low, we then have to factor into things the number of men who fought at the Fords of Isen with Théodred. Many of them will have fallen, and many more will not have been in the shape to ride for Gondor. The same will be true for some of those at the Hornburg. Erkenbrand stayed behind, overseeing Helm's Deep and the Dunlending prisoners. He must have had a force numbering several hundred, even if they were walking wounded. Then, there's troops defending Dunharrow, if not other places as well.

There may be more numbers in Unfinished Tales (there's a whole chapter on the military organisation of Rohan), but I am unable to provide details - my copy is 300 miles away.

So I felt like playing MEP again, and spent some time during the weekend trying to get the first steps of a sandbox MEP version functional. Here's what I got:

-Removed hardcoded war of the ring events
-Changed start date to 30 years earlier for war of the ring scenario
-Removed faction restrictions for more sandbox-y experience
-Added some missing horselord CBs, including make tributary
-Made most princes of Gondor tributaries of the Steward/King by event when they take the throne.
-"Corrupted by Darkness rulers" have a 50% chance of becoming tributaries of mordor directly, per ruler, if easterling or southron group.
-Gave Tower of Ecthelion 1000 retinue size bonus to make up for this
-Oath of Eorl is represented as friendship between a new steward/king of gondor and a new king of Rohan
-Put Maglor in Himling, where he sits singing sad songs by the beach each day :p All by his lonesome.
-It's a dirty fix, but made Sauron and the Nazgul orc religion so Mordor isnt spending all its time in wars of tyranny due to sauron revoking titles from those not of the umaiar religion. On the upside, this also makes Sauron much more aggressive, which is good since he is an evil overlord.
-Made Saruman religion uruk for similar gameplay reasons, also so that he gets access to the orkish/uruk prepared invasions
-White Council Mechanics (crude alliance system for the goodies)
-Once you get to 2000 prestige and are a guardian of middle earth, you are invited to join the White Council
-Now, if you get 100 relations with another guardian of middle-earth, you can send 500 gold to become friends with that person, in effect, creating an alliance

-For a real sandbox experience, you can now invite members of other races (elves, dwarves, halflings, if you are human and have the guardian of middle earth trait) to your court, which allows you to colonize wilderness provinces with those races as long as they remain in your court. This costs 500 gold and prestige.

This only supports the War of the Ring bookmark.

Releasing as-is as a submod, unlikely to be updated, and the team of course is most welcome to integrate anything they like into the proper version :)

Rather than completely removing the war of the ring events, which I'm sure consumed hours of some poor modder's time, in my opinion it would make more sense to generalize them into semi-random, but guaranteed events that fire not for specific characters perhaps, but for rulers meeting certain requirements. For example, instead of "Frodo" specifically getting the quest to destroy the one ring, perhaps it is generalized into "any hobbit character after a war is declared by Mordor" getting the quest, so it still fires even if Frodo dies. This is an idea along the lines of Victoria 2's American Civil War event chain, which was really a collection of random events enabled by a couple flags, all guaranteeing in the end the firing of the actual war.

TLDR: Why remove the War of the Ring entirely, when you can turn it into a semi-random event chain to get rid of most of the bugs anyway?

No offense, but you clearly don't know much about modding - Removing the war of the ring events and the associated mechanics took 5 minutes, rewriting the entire thing to make it better and more dynamic would take tens of hours ;)

The problem is that I wrote the events a long time ago, they're a mess, and no one wants to/knows how to fix them anymore so the best choice is to let the new team try to rebuild things from scratch so that they know what's what and can fix whatever issues might come up in the future.

Hey guys, so I am majoring in computer science right now and a lot of what we have been learning involving JavaScript and such is actually really related to some of the ways CK2 is scripted. I'm not saying I can help right now, but I'm going to take some time, look at the script, maybe write a few events to practice, and then if I think I can help, I would definitely be willing to. I have enjoyed this mod for a really long time and I don't want to see it fail. Hopefully, I'll be able to help you guys out.
