I miss Arachosia in this map. I guess the southern part of Bactria in the map corresponds roughly to historical Arachosia.
I want to ask, though, why are there provinces inside the Taklamakan? I know that there were settlements along the roads and rivers, but better to leave the desert impassable, right? It's one of the deadliest deserts on Earth after all.
True, but so is the Sahara. I put provinces there because it accessed an important region at the time. Even with the desert, the Tarim Basin was home to several city-states and was one of the main routes for the Silk Road.
If the desert were bigger, I would agree, but because the size of the impassable terrain would be quite small, it would mostly just serve as an awkward-looking barrier.
I have a similar concern. Also, where is the Dropbox (not entirely familiar with the forum)?
Updated the subforum with a link.
The new map looks...stretched out so to speak. In terms of provinces of the "old world", the numbers and such stayed the same, yes?
No. Everything has been resequenced. Only two province files shared the same name and number between this and the previous map.
Trust me, the stretched map becomes an acquired taste. I wasn't too happy with it either at first but I've grown to like it.
There are a couple of new provinces (Mostly in Sardinia), but yeah, Western Europe is the same as vanilla's
I've also gone through and removed provinces that from a historical standpoint should not have been there to begin with. Sadly, one of those was the extra province in Tara Romaneasca; I looked at every map I could find involving Roman habitation of the region, and it seems the only division the Romans ever had in Ad Moesiam was split in two. Since Shay's Mithraic-Christians were not serving any real purpose and because the Mithraic-Christians had a high number of provinces anyway, I went with the other one.
Other than that, the provinces that have been added are: two new provinces in Sardinia, one new province near Tripolitania (island of Meninx, look closely, it's small), one new province on the island of Madeira, the Canaries have been split into three provinces, another province was added in Arabia, another province was added in Sakastan, and maybe more, I forget.
Is this happening/was done due to engine limitations? Or was a done intentionally?
We cropped our map off of Umbra Spherae, whose map has a "stretched" point of view. While the stretching is indeed unrealistic, I would argue that other maps are also unrealistic in their Eurocentricism (especially vanilla's, to the point of making India lopsided just so Europe would appear straight). This one leans more towards the other side of the unrealism, favoring a global perspective over a specialized one. Ideally, an accurate map would have the features of the map outside of Europe and the features of the original map for Europe and the other associated areas featured in the original map. That being said, I just worked with what I was given.
How much of a bigger hit will my rig take with this enormous map?
I mean, I AM glad that we receive such a huge map that took months of hard work. But those new provinces (mostly the African ones) are things I will probably not even bother to look at during 90% of my playthroughs. Will we have the option to keep a European only map? Can it be modded in?
At first, I thought it would be fine. It looks like it hits harder than I thought, but it still should be OK.
I don't know if someone else wants to undergo that task, but I'm not going to lay a finger on it. Maybe someone will keep the old map for those who want to omit the extra provinces, but to anyone who plays this map with the intention of overlooking/ignoring part of it is making a mistake. For one:
Doesn't look like that's possible. I think Aboisso is just a little confused; all the other republics are building near their home cities. But it's 100% possible for this to happen. In the same observe game, Bergen also started establishing competing trade posts in the Caspian as well.
For two, it's not unrealistic or irrelevant to include any of the regions that were included because the ancient world was not as disconnected as people tend to think. Contact and trade with India, China, and Africa were all possible and even routine enough to develop trade routes across the Indian Ocean and through Hindu Kush. The Portuguese were far from the first Europeans to make contact with the East Coast.
I understand the concern for your engine, and I hope it doesn't take too much of a toll, but I'm not going to undo anything I just did. Sorry.
Also, did the disappearance of Shaytana ever get solved? He seemed to drop off the face of the earth. Alien abduction? Took the vows? Something more sinister/tragic?
I agree with Martellus. Definitely the desert.
