A traveling Roman scholar arrives at your court. To your nobles' delight he starts recounting tales about the ancient Romans great love of pomp and ceremony...

We could do with some Roman glory around here! (50% chance of gaining the trait "Pompous' (-.03 wealth/month, -1 diplomacy))

What glory? (50% chance of gaining the trait 'Plain' (-.05 prestige/month, +1 martial, -1 diplomacy, -1 learning))

Is there any reason to choose option A here? (I think there's at least one other Pompous vs. Plain event as well.) Maybe give Pompous a small prestige gain/month, or +diplomacy rather than -diplomacy?

Roleplay. :) I'll think of changing the trait though.

I also updated my AAR. :)

I agree. Pompous implies a closed system, where the character in question believes he/his people are better than others. He would hoard things he/his people could use, I'd hazard to guess, including money (IE he'd be stingy with foreigners, have higher tariffs, etc).

Pompous might bestow +.03 wealth at the cost of -1 diplomacy and -1 learning.

I'm pretty sure that the Plain trait also gives some military penalties. You know, the actual battle numbers like -10% Flanking or Morale Damage or what have you. I NEVER choose plain heh.

Is pompousness really a detriment to diplomacy, though? Every king's court is full of pomp and ceremony-- the gilded thrones, the elaborate court protocols, mink-lined capes and all sorts of superfluous stuff like that are all totally pompous things. How many kings are fondly remembered for sitting on a plain wooden chair behind an unembellished desk, wearing unadorned peasant's clothing all day?

True, pomp and ceremony were held in high regard among many courts as very useful diplomatic tools, most notably Byzantines and Chinese tried every time to overwhelm foreign emissaries senses with excessive splendour. And they often succeeded.

Well if you want an honest answer the majority of the humble French monarchs--even in the early medieval period not at all very far removed from Lux--were among the most honored of all kings. Louis IX, for example, was highly honored for his piety and simplicity, and berated his followers when they said they would rather go to hell than be a Leper.

It's true, though, that France had a lot of stuff going on that made it value piety and humility during this time period, and it wasn't at all true later down the line or for most other monarchies. Regardless, the negative to diplomacy was supposed to simulate poor relations with foreign courts, who wouldn't at all approve of a higher-than-thou king looking down on them. I suppose the trait could be made more realistic and balanced by adding in a +5 or +10 vassal relations modifier to balance out the -1 diplomacy.

Brythonia, Arturus I, died of natural causes at age 70.
Queen Mother Satica, first (and only wife) of Arturus I, alive at 69.
Mada Pendragon, eldest daughter of Arturus, dead at age 29 of illness, no issue.
Her aged (and celibate) husband survived her, and died at age 80.
Queen Aytena, Arturus's second and last daughter, alive at age 39.
Aytena's first husband died at age 69 of natural causes.
Satica, Aytena's eldest daughter, and the only one by her first husband, died at age 20.
Satica's widower is still living, as is their 1 year old daughter, Godgifu of Chester.
Princess Umaxa, heir to the throne of Brythonia, age 8, daughter of Aytena by her second husband, is age 8, betrothed to the 5 year old great-grandson of Comes (formerly Dux) Maximus Artorius of Dyfed (only son of only son of eldest son; thought it was a matrilinear betrothal, but it looks like it's a normal... have to see what happens when they both come of age.)
Rex Amilo Bolgios, Aytena's Galatian second husband, is 32, with a strong claim on the throne of Singidunum (which is much too far away to consider pursuing at this point.)

The Welsh Artorii have a healthy brood (Maximus has 3 sons and 3 daughters, all but the eldest daughter living.) The Cornish Artorii are the hillbilly branch (current king Gerallus I, grandson of Magnus, is 27 and has been married 3 times, twice to aunts, and currently to a cousin. Other than Gerallus, his wife, and his son by wife/aunt #2, the only other surviving member of the clan is his 20 year old spinster sister.)

Queen Aytena passed away of natural causes at age 44, leaving her throne to her 13 year old daughter, Umaxa. The Welsh Artorii have been displaced, Maximus' deceased eldest daughter's eldest son, Mael-Duin Ua Mail Sechlaen inheriting rather than any of his living sons (agnatic-cognatic gavelkind is bugged, the daughter's son should only have inherited if none of the sons were living nor had living sons.) The Cornish Rex Gerallus Artorius now has a son by his cousin/third wife as well as his aunt/second wife; his sister is still a spinster at 25.

+.03 Tax
-1 Diplomacy
-1 Learning
+5 Vassal Relations

The vassal relations bonus is to balance out the -1 Dip, which is supposed to represent the pompous ruler and foreign lords having poor relations because of his supremacy complex. The "both pompous" modifier should provide -10 relations; if possible, it should be +10 if they hold the same culture type. Might be a good idea to make the Dip -2, though, and bump up vassal relations to +10.

44 years is not bad imho. 13 year old daughters make for perfect rulers. ;)

Actually, I like this one more, but with a few changes:

-.02 wealth/month
+.05 prestige/month
-1 diplomacy
+15 vassal relations
-15 relations v. humble/plain/envious
'Cause it should cost more money to be pompous than the economic benefits it provides, but you should also have some prestige for doling out all that dough. Foreign lords will still think you being haughty is unappealing (-1 DIP), but vassals will like you quite a bit for being so prestigious and culture-centric... unless they're humble or unassuming.

I think you should add more bonus modifiers, the only one that does that in steps is martial and I think learning. Like if you have 10 martial you have decent martial ability, but you don't get bonuses for stewardship or diplomacy unless you have it really high, like Great Administrator, maybe add a decent administrator?

As a queen, I got a few events of a female courtier having something for me. Including the one in which one option says you're interrupted by her husband and you can be rendered incapable.

I don't mind the content but is it intended or is it an oversight?
