By the way yamenade, how do you plan to deal with marriage, succession and children in a population where everybody is female? If you leave things as they are, in a generation we'll have a Gensokyo with as many males as females, and this would obviously hurt the setting. My suggestion is to define half of the touhous as male for the engine purposes, while keeping their names, portraits and everything else. That way they can marry among themselves and produce other touhous, which should keep the theme for as long as needed. I realize this may sound like some of the usual shipping retardation to Touhou fans and like something weird as hell for people not familiar with the setting, but I can't think of a better solution gameplay-wise :D

Also, what are you going to do with immortal characters? I wonder what would happen if we made a trait that gave like +100 health to its recipient. Would this character still die of natural causes?

Another thing, do you plan on creating a buddhist religion for UFO characters and taoist for TD characters? It would be more faithful for the setting, but it could create some gameplay problems and it might not be worth it to create two whole religions for just a handful of characters. That aside, how about making the Moriyas a heresy of the dominant shinto religion (admittedly, this would fit better with Reimu as the head of religion instead of the Yama, but it might still work).

Anyway, here's the daily dose of portraits; today we have some taoist love:

BTW, now that I think of it, shouldn't Mononobe be the dynasty and Futo the name?

And here's today's abomination of science. Man, I'm gonna miss these when I clean up the portrait files:

good stuff

Your idea about making half of the touhous female is great, but how would that be implemented? I mean, doesn't the engine automatically generate male portraits for male characters? Is it possible to specify a female portrait for a male character? Plus, would it be possible to tell the engine to refer to them as "her" and "she"? Or do you mean giving the males your custom portraits? Must say I'm not very familiar with this stuff, but I'm more than willing to experiment. As for the immortality thing, I tried asking around before but nobody seemed to know if it was possible. Might have to experiment with the trait thing and see how that works out. With regard to religion, I'm not too sure I should create a whole different religious group as it might make the whole region a bit too unstable, and we don't want everyone hating each other. The heresy idea is fine though, I see no problem with doing that.

Fantastic portraits, as ever.

Since I'm doing the portraits, I can assign them whatever I want. I'd just put the portraits of whatever characters you designate as "male" in the files the game gets male portraits from.

Plus, would it be possible to tell the engine to refer to them as "her" and "she"?
Good point, I don't think that would be possible unless we didn't mind that the game would also refer as "she" to every single male noble in Europe...

Yes, I meant to make these religions all in the same "oriental" or whatever religion group, to avoid all kinds of nasty holy wars and such. Not heresies, either, just different religions like catholicism and orthodoxy.

Fantastic portraits, as ever.
Thanks!

Grrr... I have been trying to make a character immortal but I've failed. First I tried giving him a ton of health, but it does nothing to prevent death from old age (I even tried ridiculous values like +10000, but my test subject would still die in just a few weeks by merely starting the game being 150 years old). Then I thought of extending the default age of death by old age for all characters (I thought it would be some base age that would enable a random chance of death from that point on) and killing non-immortals by event, but this age seems to be hardcoded and apparently we can't modify anything about characters longevity.

There might still be a chance for this to be possible: using an on_death event to create a clone of the dead character, but I don't know if the game would take you to the game over screen (or transfer your control to your heir, if any) before this character is created. If anybody has a better idea, please say it; this will probably be useful for future fantasy mods with different races and the like.

I've been thinking about this too and trying out different things, and I've pretty much reached the same conclusion. The on_death idea is good, though. Perhaps it would be possible to designate the clone as the heir when he or she is created so that the game immediately transfers control over to him/her? I'm hoping there's a better solution, but that's all we've got for now.

I was also thinking, would it be possible to make sure touhous only marry other touhous to avoid creating freaks of nature like what Cabezaestufa posted earlier? Is it possible to make them only marry within their own culture by giving them a modifier that does "different culture ------" or something of the sort when considering marriage? Or some sort of trait that does that?

Don't worry about my lovely monsters appearing ingame, the game doesn't mix features between cultures. It will always use the features that correspond to the culture of the character only, no matter which culture his/her parents might have belonged to. A Gensokyan-Norwegian children will look either fully norwegian, of full touhou. My chimeras only appeared because the gfx files were unfinished.

This fact might still cause strange stuff, like a normal male guy becoming a cartoon loli if he somehow switched cultures to Gensokyan, but I think we can live with that; just one more weird incident won't make that much of a difference.

How about newly interpreting marriage and succession for Touhou characters?
I mean, we could consider marriage of Touhous not as sexual relationship, but something as rituals in order to gain the power to be existing in the world of the middle ages. As other Danmaku battles, this "time leap" should be also a game for Touhous, so we could add more gamely features in this mod.

Well personally I'm fine with Touhou marriage, shipping and stuff aside, it's not too offensive, is it? As for sex, they're all pure maidens, naturally. New touhous are generated solely from ZUN's imagination and creativity.

The marriage itself is not too offensive, I guess. However, how do we think about their children?
One idea of mine is, we could regard them as "remaining lives".
If we change father or mother_name_chance to 100, their children get 100% the names of their parents (f.e. Reimu's daughters are always named Reimu).
In this way, we could ignore the weirdness by the succession.

Dunno. I think I'd be happier with randomly named and generated Touhous, canon-destroying implications or otherwise. That's kinda the purpose of the portraits too, isn't it? Shouldn't be difficult to make a version that does what you suggested, though.

Fair enough, though I am not sure about the logical relations between the immortality, marriage and heirs of Touhou characters. I know it is a fiction mod, but it requires also a logic in order to have a fun.
