Dev Diary 3: North-Africa

I decided to do North-Africa first because information was relatively easy to come-by

Egypt

Egypt at this time was split by two competing factions while a group of Andalusians had sailed over and taken Alexandria and Caliphs authority was not enforced until several years later. With this in mind, I split them neatly in three and gave Andalusians some event troops to prevent them losing immediately (historically they went and took Krete, which they control in ToG start). kingdom title does not exist at this stage, all of them being competing dukes.

Small realms to the west are ruled by fictional rulers but Senoussi was made into tribal holding for some variant (something that I likely do for Sinai as well).

RVfNi6L.jpg

Mauretania

Mauretania is Iqta government with half of vassals tribals and other half feudal. Vassals are hodge-podge of different muslim faith while one tribal vassal has been made Jewish due to presence of them. Historical ruler was apparently something a powergaming CK2 player looks to in terms of attributes and this has been taken into consideration. However, one vassal ruler has claim to kingdom to simulate fact his predecessor relied on that tribes support to stay on this throne so who knows what might happen.

Idrisid realm expands to the borders of Ghana. Ghana and Songhay are still pagan at this time.

5dBABDx.jpg

Aghlabids & Rustamids

Both of these are fairly standard realms but to spice things up, Rustamid Imamate is simulated by giving ruler a title of Ibadi Caliph. Likewise, since map does not quite expand enough to south they have been given some event troops and money to let them get by. Aghlabids are stronger on paper but several vassals of different culture should make it more likely they cannot go expanding without trouble. Ifrinids are a Khajirite realm which probably ends up as tributary but I have yet to decide for who.

Thats about it all. Feel free to give comments. Next time I finally tackle the Caliphate.

Dev Diary IV: Levant

We are finally moving towards caliphate and first stop is Levant, a book called "White banners" gave me lots of names of local rulers and people of power around Levant. Most of this area fell away from Caliphs direct control after civil war and many years were spent bringing the rulers back to fold, mainly by Tahirid armies. As a result, Levant is even more scattered than in ToG start.

uhUDgD3.jpg

I have yet to decide which of these will be tributaries, aside from Armenia minor. Realms are of course Iqta except Sinai/El-Arish who I made tribal to give bit of buffer.

One of the interesting person available is Umar of Tarsos who gave sanctuary to Paulicians and was an all around pain in the neck for Byzantines.
VWQwqos.jpg

Beirut is held by Tanukhids who were originally Arabs and later hellenized, adopted Christianity and held land around Beirut until crusades. For game terms he is a Sunni Greek with sympathy for Christendom trait. On the other hand, Baalbek has monothelite Christian ruler representing large presence around mount Lebanon.

TLVicHR.jpg

For Palestine, name of an governor of Yemen who was transferred was mentioned and he later took over regional capital and set himself up there. Once again, actual domains are bit of a mystery so I gave him area around Ascalon and then tweaked around with rulers available in PI history files to give rulers for rest of the area. I will hardcode this persons statistics later to give him some extra coin, greedy trait and probably a fortune builder trait.

oPJbnc9.jpg

That's all for now. Next time we move on to Mesopotamia and Caliphate heartlands. I have uploaded current WIP version of the MOD to front page so people can look and make suggestions about it.

Ok, I don't think that is necessarily MOD fault.

Anyway, I am on holiday next week and away from computer. I might put something up for display before it but more likely next Dev Diary comes in 2-3 weeks unless I decide to get cracking on this weekend and get things done.

I was hoping to wait for full dev diary until I have Caliphate and surrounding lands done but I am sure people are anxious for some news so I post this here:

KHIVA

Around this time, there was a bit of a civil war in principality of Oshrusana and heir of the land fled to Abbasid Caliphate and converted to Islam. Meanwhile, his father Kawus stopped paying tribute to Caliph and challenged Tahirids in Transoxania. Mazyar Karen & Babak Khorramdin also made an alliance with him.

Khiva1.jpg

With this in mind, I have given him duchy of Khiva (Caliph has strong claim to it). Naturally Kawus was given some event troops and money (simulating refused tribute) to give him some staying power. Since Kawus was later taken to Caliph and forced to convert after losing the war, I have kept him Manichean as per history files (which change his religion couple of years later).

Local religion was a branch of Zoroastrianism with Pagan elements mixed in so Manicheanism is not exactly right but we go with what we have.

Since Sogdians were religiously quite tolerant, Kawus has vassals who are of different religions. Historical Khudas (Zoroastrian) and Afrigids (Sunni) are there of course. Chach has been kept with Shi dynasty (Manichean) as in CM start.

Dashowutz has been given to father of Abi'l Saj. In game terms I have made Devdasth Nestorian as they had presence in Transoxania and this gives Ironman players some more options, even if historically they should only hold a barony. Abi'l is Sunni though. Combined with fact that AI wont go for Ultimogoture, under AI Khiva will eventually become Muslim unless vassals decide to overthrow the ruler when time comes.

khiva2.jpg

Cousin of Kawus, Al-Farghani (Muslim) was also inserted to his court (with claim on Fergana) to give player some option of challenging Tahirids without resulting to Holy War.

Khiva3.jpg
---------------------------------------------------

Aside from this, work on Caliphate and it's surrounding lands is coming out nicely but it is of course large project. However, should take week or two and it's all done, depending how much time I can devote to things.

At this start date Middle East looks very interesting place to play. ;]

DEV DIARY V: Caliphate

Ok, so Caliphate is more or less done now. Al'Mamun rulers it. As he controls e_arabia, he has de-jure claims on pretty much all the splintered areas of the Caliphate and depending on what stats get generated, some of these areas might join him automatically. Some claims have been given on areas which were slipping out of control like Sindh. Historically the conflict between Mutazilites and Asharis started at this time with Caliph siding with Mutaziles and establishing what essentially amounted to Inquisition.

Caliph.jpg

His brother also started giving power to altaic Ghulams so I have granted provinces to few of the historical commanders. Some historical people such as Christian doctors have also been inserted to various courts.

Khazari.jpg

In Persia, Tahirids hold large number of land as rulers of Khorasan. Previous ruler had essentially told Caliph to get stuffed but his son was given rulership anyway. With this in mind, Tahirids are tributary. Game could not simulate how the inheritance went since other son would get duchy title under Caliph. Therefore Tahirs death was made one year early and Talha given rulership.

Samanid dynasty also holds plenty of land under Tahirids and you have a choice of four playable ones.

Tahirids.jpg
Samanid.jpg

Elsewhere in Caliphate I have granted lands to military leaders or rebels whenever an actual ruler could not be found for the area. Within Mesopotamia, these are mainly rulers who hold single provinces while Persia has duke level rulers in Sistan, Hamadan, Fars and Tabaristan. There is also independent county in Oromieh, led by apparently short-lived but nasty dynasty (They will be made tributary in final version though). In addition to this, Balochistan had a large scale Kharijite rebellion going on.

Sadakiya.jpg

Kharijites.jpg

And of course, we have two notorious rebels. Babak Khorramdin who holds bulk of Azerbaijan with plenty of event troops to keep the rebellion going. Mazyar Karen can be found under d_mazadanrandan with claims to the lands he would soon start taking for himself and being a general pain in the neck for everyone.
Babak.jpg

Maziar.jpg

As a final note, there was a very long rebellion by "Jutt's" (Indian slaves) in southern Mesopotamia at this time. With this in mind, there are couple of Dharmic provinces in southern Mesopotamia to simulate them causing trouble. I might later just script an event for it though.

That's about it all. I am still finding info on few potential Tahirid subvassals. Likewise, it seems changing computer did something to my files and currently "arrange marriage" nor "take concubine" work in the MOD. Until I can fix them, I have to stop working with the MOD.

If someone wants to help me in this regard, that would be nice. It has something to do with character files from what I have been told.
