I have an idea for a mod, or perhaps an element of a mod, but I don't have the know-how or patience to make it a reality. I figured I may as well get this idea out to the modding community here so someone could do something with it. Whether you'd like to make it a mod in itself or as part of another mod, go ahead. Hell, go ahead and claim the idea for yourself, I don't care. I'd just like to see this made. Now, my knowledge of Hearts of Iron mods is limited, so I don't know if someone has done something like this before. However, since I don't know of anything of the sort, I figure I should get the idea out there anyways.

My idea is to have the United States (Or maybe some other nation, but I've thought this around the United States) we divided into different nations by state. So every state is essentially it's own nation. Washington D.C. would be it's own nation, and control all the other US countries as puppets. Overseas territories, if they are included, would either be one nation, US Overseas Territories, or under the direct control of different states or Washington D.C. They would all be connected by virtue of being puppets of Washington D.C., Military Alliance, and perhaps by being in the same Bloc (i.e. the United States), along with the Entente/Allies, Central Powers/Axis (Depending on what the time period is and how different things will be), and Comintern. The Head of State of Washington D.C., the President, would also be Head of State of every state in the Union. The Head of Government of Washington D.C. would be the Vice President, while for each state it would be someone else, equivalent to a Governor. The President could either be selected by Washington with the choice being imposed on the other states, or voted on by the states in a complex event chain. Although all the states would be united, there would be events that could lead to some states leaving the Union and becoming independent nations. There could also be some events that could settle potential border disputes between States, though this may be pushing it. The idea would be more or less starting with this unified confederation of states that slowly breaks apart. There could also be event chains for individual states or Washington D.C. to unify the country, with the possibility of some states refusing and becoming their own nations. This could also use some sort of event chain that would simulate voting. Since the borders of the United States are a bit... Eh... Creative, especially in the Midwest in Darkest Hour Full and pretty much everywhere in Light, the territory that each state controls would either be created using one's best judgement or with the Areas as their guide. Some states may have to be combine, such as Rhode Island and Connecticut, or Maryland and Delaware, though it wouldn't be too much of an issue. Now, as to what things are like outside the US, that's really up to the modder to decide, whether it be an ahistorical mod or one with everything normal save for the United States.

So what do you all think? Is this a good idea? Is it bad? Any ideas to improve it? Any comments at all?

I think it sounds like a fun idea. Voting events should indeed be in a complex event chain with each state, this would make it very interesting. I'd give it a try and play it if something like this was created.

This would be very cool, but complicated to achieve; you would have to separate out all leaders and ministers into their states, which would be time-consuming at the very least....

It is indeed a nice idea I toyed with the idea myself, but as you pointed out, the borders are sometimes a bit tweaky etc. But I really would encourage you to pursue the project! I think that the best option would be to have a normal 1936 scenario with the Falling USA apart...then you could opt for the Washington (central government) to enforce authority -> leading to 2 choices either war or acceptance (integration would be thus annexation). Furthermore what would be nice is, if one of the states would achieve dominance (controlling all of USA) they could opt to form the union again or not (plus for southern states to form the CSA confederacy). Or the southern states could in reaction form the CSA to combat Washington.

There are several ways to go anyways, good luck with it...I will try to help if I can but I am no good with ministers and leaders of USA....good luck!

I figure I could start messing around with the files and see what I can come up with. However, I have no idea what I'm doing, so it'll be more or less trial and error.

(EDIT: As I expected, I couldn't figure out a single thing on my own. Ah well, I'd rather a more experienced modder take up such a difficult task, anyways.)

However, I think I know how a sort of voting-type event chain could work. It could start with one state, and when they make a choice, another state would make it's choice, and so on until either all states have made a choice or enough states have said no that, even if everyone after that said yes, it wouldn't be enough for it to pass. As for Presidential elections, I have no idea how that would go. It may just be easier to have Washington D.C. decide.
