generalolaf's Localisation Enhancement Mod
A small modification for Crusader Kings II​

This is the result of my dissatisfaction with some of the naming conventions in vanilla. Essentially, it gives specific localisations for certain titles when held by certain cultures - for example, Wales is now Brythonia when held by a Welsh-cultured person (as most people who claimed that title called themselves 'king of the Britons' and none called themselves Welsh). Only a few titles are changed at the moment and the mod isn't feature-complete - eventually I plan to give most titles names for local cultures, leaving the current ones for foreigners (except in a few cases such as the HRE, which will become Germania for most religions when I work out how to do that). Version 0.1 is working as far as I'm aware, and you can download that from the bottom of the post.

Future plans:
-Finish cultural title renaming/adjective localisation
----Rename Volga Bulgaria to Volga for everyone except Mordvins, Bolghars and Bulgarians
----Rename Byzantine Empire to Empire of Asia Minor for non-Hellenes/Christians (who will call it the Eastern Roman Empire)
----Rename HRE to Empire of Germania for non-Hellenes/Christians (Catholics/Catholic heresies will call it the HRE, Orthodox, Miaphysites, Hellenes and associated heresies will call it the Western Roman Empire)
----Many other (smaller) cultural renames
-Change localisation for Emperors for most Empires
-Remove some of the more ridiculous culture restrictons on kingdom and empire titles and apply some cultural renames (eg. for Volga Bulgaria so it can be formed by all the local tribes)
-Implement more changes to titles for reformed pagan religions (thanks to gis) and the Hellenic pagans

Conundrums (all the things I'm thinking about and am looking for suggestions on)
-Better name for a Bolghar Tartaria?
-Suitable cultural renames for the duchies and kingdom of Finland
-Should the Norse name for Scotland (Skotland) have an 'r' at the end? I read somewhere that denotes a proper noun.
-Can you rename titles based on religion/culture group? How?

Should be compatible with any mod that doesn't change any of these files:

While the word "Cymru" seems to have been in usage in this period, rulers who ruled all of Wales (or claimed that they should) are referred to as "King of the Britons". I think Brythonia would be more appropriate than Cymru for Welsh characters.

Cornish was referred to as West Welsh in the early Middle Ages and Breton and Cornish were as closely related as Irish and Scots Gaelic are today. (They're Brythonic/P-Celtic, whereas the Gaelic tongues are Goidelic/Q-Celtic.)

Anything that doesn't alter the landed_titles file is compatible with this at the moment.

I plan for the HRE to be called the Western Roman Empire when held by Orthodox rulers. It seemed to fit, although perhaps the ERE name should apply to all Orthodox as well.

That's a good point, I'll change it in the next version.

Great work, I was looking for such a mod for a long time and here you pop up. Hope you continue developing it because it's a really nice flavor addition. Sad to see that not so many mods use the culture specific title names feature. Good luck, I will definitely follow this mod.

Finnish? I haven't got any particular plans for those titles, although that probably will happen at some point. Edit: Added to the front page with some other stuff I'm looking for opinions on.

How about the Asian Empire for western non Helleno-Christian ERE?
In all common Western histories of the period, "Asia Minor" as a location would be more familiar than the Greek "Anatolia" (east/rising sun). It is bounded on all sides by other areas easier and more distinctive to name otherwise.

Non-Turk occupiers from the North/East could use the Altai-Mongol neologism Orunbaraghun; Persians could use Katpatuka, the original Persian name for all Anatolia and not just Cappadocia.

Ireland should be Éire when controlled by Irish cultured characters. I'm pretty sure they mostly spoke Irish back then and that's the Irish for Ireland.

I suggest you change the names of the different pagan religions as well, give the unorganised versions more cultural names, like Baltic Faith instead of Romuva Faith and Altaic Faith instead of Tengri Faith. And then make the reformed versions have the neopagan names, like Romuva, Asatru, Tengri

In regards to your question about a Bolghar Tartaria, I would pick Old Great Bulgaria ( or just Great Bulgaria if you prefer ) or Onoguria.

Also, i modded the game to have Volga Bulgaria appear as Mordovia if held by a Mordvin so you could do that.

As a final suggestion, i would have Tartaria appear as Great Cumania and the like depending on culture. (Tartaria is such an ugly and anachronistic term! Not sure how it would be called if held by Pechenegs tho. Patzinakia?)

I like those! I'd prefer to use 'Empire of Asia Minor' if I can work out how to use short names for only some cultures though.

I'm mostly sticking with Anglicised names unless there's no alternative that is suitable. I think I'll leave Ireland for now.

I think I will make Romuva 'Baltic' again, but Tengriism is the proper name for the Steppe religion IIRC.

I like Onoguria as a name - where did you get that? Mordovia thing is a good idea too.
Great Cumania etc is already implemented (since 0.2 )

Oh, you should change the Hellenic titles. Right now it says High Chief and stuff like that.
