If you've read the Malus Darkblade books, you'd see just how often the dark elves kill each other, not to mention slaves/humans/elves etc in battles abroad and at home. I figured that if that was how often dark elves die in their culture, they would have died out centuries ago unless they had a positive birthrate. The Malus Darkblade books also mention very large families; for example Malus has 2 sisters and 2 brothers.
Also, shoudn't the Dark Elves need to defend from the hordes coming down from north as well? The Asur are relatively more sheltered, whereas Naggaroth is directly below the Chaos Wasteland.

Yeah, I think that no matter how vague GW is about the dark elven population growth, anything that is not a positive number just sounds like they would have gone extinct a long time ago.

The Asur, in comparison, live a much more peaceful life but their population is still going down, meaning that it is somethign about Ulthuan or the Asur which is the cause of this. My guess is the Vortex, but it doesn't really matter... the important thing is that the Asur are losing numbers even during times of peace, while the Druchii and Asrai apparently are not.

Just mentioning, I remember reading something about an official Statement from GW that they have an internal policy on the elven population.
Which basically says that there are always exactly as many elves as the storyteller actually needs to have for his story to make sense.
So the Asur might be close to extinction one century, then field hundreds of thousands of soldiers in another, and so on. Same thing with the Dark Elves.
Mostly because, as you said, it wouldn't make any sense if they actually gave definite numbers on this for any of them.
From a gameplay standing, your idea with the Vortex seems legit (for me) and as long as there is a legitimate way of reversing or slowing it at least (say, not doing any unnecessary "colonisation" projects) then I'd back that completely.

As to dwarves, I also think that they mostly die because the Slann messed up their whole tunnel system, everyone is shut off from the others, and they have to fight 24/7 on about 340 days of the year (some few days are free :p ) for sheer survival against all the explosive breeders out there. They are a little less fertile than humans, as is average, but they are much much sturdier and they never change their ways, which is what will kill them off in the end.
They don't really have a way to get things properly going, and in those rare cases where they meet, they either can't decide (because every dwarf thinks differently and all are too stubborn to change their opinion) or they decide for the known way of staying on the defense until things outside look better.
I dearly love those grumbling little mead barrels with beards, but they are the race for which I personally see no hope of survival on their own in the End Times.

MTTH is 200 years for one level of depopulation, so thats 800 years until, on average, all Asur provinces in Ulthuan are severely depopulated.

The real danger is when provinces are occupied or you raise levies. Occupation lowers it every 10 years, and with levies raised, it s every 66 years.

the problem is that GW changes the Lore all the time that if i gave you my sources i know that there is a counter source be thay a new army book or what ever the best policy i have found is pick the lore you think fits best and stick with it

as for sources well the dwarf one seems like common sence thay are allways under attack be it orks, skaven, chaos, or the hundreds of nasty's underground the best examples are the Norse Dwarfs and Chaos Dwarfs both groups are not under constant attack and both have growing pops

the High elf one came from one of my Old High elf Army books but thay are not my favored race and i never kept up on them like i said the lore changes with each book i just picked the lore that i felt was interesting/worked

I would tend to place the blame on lifestyle choices more than any issues of innate fertility. Dark elves eeek pleasure in all its forms and thus presumably have sex frequently with lots of women. High elves sit about contemplating their peaceful lives and simply don't bother. Look at it like the differing birth rates in the more developed parts of the world compared to the less developed here on earth.
