huh, looking good so far, I wonder are there any maps of North America I can look at for specific borders, like the US-Canadian Border region to see if it includes some provinces that would make the US-Canadian border pre 1818 as accurate as possible.

(obviously I would like to open it in MSPaint but the program can't open files with a massive canvas size for some reason I am not aware of)

This is not a software map. I only wish it was. It is a manually created map, and the thousands of files have been manually ported to this map, one line at a time.
Asking as someone with no experience or knowledge of map editing in Non-Clausewitz games:

What is a "software map" in the context of Darkest Hour? And just how insanely convoluted is the map system if something as simple as merging provinces is an exercise in exhaustion? I'm almost afraid to ask.

Man, I bet that people who did map modding were extremely relieved when Paradox switched to the Clausewitz engine and maps could be altered with microsoft paint.

Well the map itself relies on 4 different layers. Make a change in one you have to also change the other layers. In addition several database files need to be changed otherwise it won’t work. It is not a question of using MS paint or GIMP or photoshop. You could use any of them to paint the map. The problem is assembling everything over all these layers. MS paint does not allow you to work with layers, so painting the map with it would be very unnerving.

UPDATE: I still have some work left to do in the revolt.txt file, and for some reason the US armies all decamp to Alaska, even though all the provinces in Alaska are set to ignore... :)

Just copy the IDs from revolt.txt. Then paste them into excel. The data will be pasted into just one cell. Click the data tab, select text to column, click delimited and selct space. Copy the cells and paste with the transpose option into cell C3 ot the workbook. It will then automatically change all old to new IDs.

Hey Fabian, that file is for the conversion of the E3 map to whatever. I have, well it used to be an excel file, now it is an openoffice file, for the conversion of DH to our E3FN map.

I'll send you everything I have, just in case you are waiting on me. I was waiting on you :)

Yes conversion of old E3 to new E3. Sorry you are right of course you needed DH to new E3. Didn‘t do one yet. Send me what you have that would be great. Unfortunately I ran into a map problem with AOD. You wouldn’t by any chance have an idea to remedy this problem? The map runs fine on DH. I’ll send you a link to the map files later today. But there are still things to do: we need to check river adjacencies. I already noticed that some are not correct. We also need to adjust map icon, counter and sprite positions. Unfortunately both Object Editor and Adjacency Maker do not work. So will have to input the values manually. Really annoying.

AOD, I can try and have a look. With AOD, there is no error checker...
I included my conversion file in the game files for you, although you may already have that file?

Those positions will have to be changed in the provinces.csv file and THAT file is very flaky to use. Excel used to "add stuff" to the file on saving, but OpenOffice did not... Also OpenOffice now also "adds stuff" which corrupts the file. Stuff like -0 where previously there was a blank cell.

I can help with anything you need.

With the game open, if you go F12 and then showid, the province ID will appear in the bottom right corner of the screen.

This thread is about the E3FN map. It is not about mapping problems.
Can you please start your own thread for mapping problems. I don't know anything about mapping. I did try, but as I told you, you would be mad to even try. Thanks

It's ai problem not map, but as you have to put the new provinces in the ai files, maybe it could be solved (or not)

For example, on your test games, does Bulgaria protect the Aegean coast?
