Yeah make sure you're editing the defines.lua file with Notepad++ since regular Notepad does something to the file.

My mod does not even contain the defines.lua, so I am pretty sure that is not it. In any case, I have stripped the mod down to the map only, just the Western Hemisphere mod it was based on. I first need to get that to work, then add back in more and more parts so that when I hit a problem I will know that the error comes from the latest portion I added back in. This is the best way that I know to troubleshoot all the changes from all the updates since version 1.092.

I have already changed the 'default.map' and the 'adjacencies.csv' to match the current map changes, so it must be something else. I downloaded another mod map that actually works and I am going to compare it to mine and see if I can strip out even more of my map files to get it to work.

Edit: I got the map to work, so I know I am on the right track.

@Apollo1784, I think the map would be too big. I think at one time there was an entire world mod, but I never played it. And the guys who were working on this mod with me last year had already started work on making a 'Sunrise Invasion' in which conquistadors land and start marauding all over the place. I would like to make it a random (or several random) European invaders that land on the East coast. That way you may face the Spanish, or maybe the Irish, Russian, or perhaps Turkish invaders. The plan is to introduce smallpox at the same time as the European invasion. I also read somewhere that you could make a disease more or less potent for different cultures. If so we can massively increase the deadliness of smallpox for Natives and better model what happened during the conquest of the Americas. Try fighting off the Europeans as the Aztecs with half your armies dead!

@noahboy88, I do not own EU and have no idea how to make the mod converter compatible, but if anyone knows how to do it I would be happy to put it in there. First order of business is getting it to work though.

How far along is this mod (progress of the map, events, cultures etc.)? Should we be expecting a working version in a few weeks' time or will it be a longer wait?

I have 22 cultures, 70% or so of the map, religions were good (before the Old Gods and Rajas of India) but almost no events. I have lots of event ideas (the Black Drink Rituals of the Cahokia, the Burning Dog Festival of the Iroquois) but nothing much written.

Currently however the mod does not work and I have to get it working first. So far no ETA. I have been posting on the map modding thread so if you have any ideas I would love to hear them.

Do you have any plans to expand the map to allow for inuit to be more playable? And what about the natives further south in the americas.

Also if you want to add Inuits easily I already have a list of Inuit first names and a workable list of inuit dynasty names based on inuit language.

The northernmost natives are the Salish, Cree, Innu and Algonquin. I have no plans for adding anything else until I get a good working copy of the mod going. After that I am open to any and all suggestions to make it better.

Noahboy88, I am new to Steam so I do not know how to answer that. If there is more than one Konman just send a message to all of us until I reply.

I'm not sure if this was discussed, but I have some ideas with what the empire titles would be (in case you haven't made any yet) (there were some of kingdoms whose names I couldn't read):
Vindlandic Empire/Northern Confederacy (depending on who forms this title) (Vinland/The Confederacy)
Iroquois (Northern half), Wahgoshig, area in Silver surrounding James Bay, Wabanaki, Nitassinan, and Beothuk
The Atlantic Council (The Atlantic)
Southern half of Iroquois, Tsaigihi, Appalachee, and Tsenacommacah
The Plains Council (The Plains)
Oneota, Cahokia, Caddo, Wichita, Absarok, and area in brown north of Oneonta (Maybe Comacheria and Plaquemine if Aztecs are too OP)
The Pacific Empire/The Pacific Commonwealth (The Pacific)
Tsinuk, Yokutsan, Parowan, Pataya, Niitsitapi, and Anasazi (Maybe Hohokam if Aztecs are too OP)

I like some of your ideas. Especially the Plains Council. I wanted the big empires hard to form, like Mississippi and Mexica (or Mexico). Maybe after a few games it will be obvious that some of these are better than others and for balance some may need to change.

And, yes, I know there were four kingdoms in the Incan Empire but the map does not go far enough south and I am not going to attempt to enlarge it at this time.

I don't know if you have already done, but if not I can help creating the baronies, counties and duchies in the 2 brazilian kingdoms

I very much need help with names. I am trying to use the native location names for the provinces where ever I can. If I can't find native place names I look up records from the European conquest and try to use first contact tribe names. If that does not work I look up current tribal groups and sometimes use their surnames, on the assumption that they may have been the name of a tribe at one time. I should add that all the provinces have names (they can change if another name makes more sense), I need duchies and baronies, as well as an Empire name.

Do you have a de jure duchy map(s)? I'd be happy to find appropriate regional names throughout the continent, and I can help with baronies in California.

As for empires... for most of remaining ones, picking any native name is going to be as inaccurate/contrived as using a later colonial name. California in particular has dozens of languages, and about a dozen distinct families that I can name off the top of my head (just about every linguist working on these languages rejects Hokan and Penutian as actual language families).

If you're trying to keep a strict adherence to only native names, nothing is going to work for California.


Speaking of Penutian... I would recommend renaming it to Californian. It's a nice catchall, and when used in the old Spanish colonial sense, accurate for the entire region covered by the culture on your map.

And on the Comanche, until the 1700s, when they adapted to the horse-based Plains lifestyle, they were just a branch of the Shoshone, living up around Idaho. I don't have any suggestion for what to replace them with - I don't think that any particularly distinctive culture characterized the area classified as Comanche on your map. Perhaps the Caddo? Actually, I think the Sioux were also a latecomer to the Plains region...

Well, it's easy to get nitpicky when you're not the one doing the work. I'm sure you already plan to do a lot to the culture set up once you get the mod working again.

I have some duchies worked out, but many are not.

California is a mess of different languages and cultures and I did not feel like getting too into it yet, but I agree more work needs done in the future.

I also agree with the statement about the Comanche, but barring any other known information about that area I picked an anachronistic name. I am sure other parts of the map have similar problems.

Sun Dance Event-
Ropes are attached to a large pole and it is erected upright. The young men have the skin of their chest pierced and loops of rawhide thongs are thread through the skin and tired to the ropes. The men dance around the pole while others beat drums and chant prayers for hours.
Participate in the dance – chance for Zealous/chance to gain Wounded
Offer to beat drums – chance for Craven
Lead the chanting – chance for Gregarious
Decline – gains Cynical

Final Feast and everyone goes home with an opinion boost.
