Into the foreseeable future, I will be using the African Portraits DLC. It's not the best solution, but it's the easiest. I've never messed with portrait modding and have little artistic talent, so while making new set of portraits would be nice, it's not high on the to-do list.
I feel like the Maori are in an even worse boat at the moment, though. They're using mongol portraits

Maybe adding this into the history files of New Zealand was a bit too excessive. Perhaps.

Ahhh why not? It's more sensible than adding the characters from 'The Magic is Going' by Larry Niven, and have the Aborigines all be descended from the wizards.

They're actually not bad. The main problem is the skin tone and if you wanted to make them look really authentic some moko would be awesome:

IIRC only men have the full face ones but I could be wrong.

Middle of the year means that all my semester courses are having their big assignments and tests due. All of Australia and the islands of Melanesia are complete, I've just been experimenting with events in order to get things moving a little better.
In particular, I'm trying to better model despotic and tribal realms. In the latest beta for CK2, the ability to alter demesne size via modifier was added. If I combine that with a restriction against holding duchies, kingdoms or empires, I might be able to get some really good dynamics out of inheritance (like not being able to cheese things involving vassal titles) while making the game more conquest-oriented for the pagan countries.
In return, ruler stats will probably matter a lot more for absolute rulers. Without good stewardship, diplomacy and prestige, holding a large empire should be unstable. Heck, if most large 'uncivilized' bodies broke to warring pieces when their amazing ruler died, I'd be happy.
Because in my placeholder provinces, I grouped Brunei and the Philippines together. Same with just about everything else down there being East Indies, and the entirety of SEA being called 'Indochina'.

I've spent a while working on localization, but I don't see myself having any lucky translating the aborigine culture names to something more... authentic? Perhaps I'll just name them after the kingdoms I've put them in. For New Zealand, I'm still torn between simply putting 'North Islander' and 'South Islander', or trying to go for something like 'Iwi Raki' and 'Iwi Tonga'. I've had similar issues for duchy names in some places (prominently Melanesian archipelagos). Randomly having 'King Amba of The Solomon Islands' doesn't quite fit very well.
