Love it.

I kinda wanted Paradox, instead of doing an Aztec invasion, i wanted it to be a Kangaroo invasion.

Because, why not?

Honestly, I was half tempted to make some rare event where dingoes would steal away one of your younger children for food, but decided against it on the grounds that people wouldn't be happy about the local wildlife stealing their only heirs.

Win.

Drop bears are not necessary - there's plenty of other shit that will murder you instead.

Neat! I wonder how (if at all) this can interact with the EU4 converter. If it's ok with you, I'd like to sandbox your creating in the converter and see if I can make it work properly

It should work just fine, but it would mean making a completely new province map, a new set of religions and national idea stuffs and what-not. Don't expect it to work too well with an Australia game though, all that wasteland in EU4 :,(

There's also the fact that the mod more or less goes entirely through EU4's timeframe (1500-1840), though I plan on letting anyone use the map for what they want, which is probably an actual historically accurate mod.

Land of the long white cloud (or abiding day, depending on how you want to look at it), Aotearoa is a very viable, if isolated, position. The Maori are great seafarers, and there's no reason why a strong king, once he has united both islands, can't turn his ambitions northwards.

South island contains ten provinces, three duchies and one kingdom. The north island contains seventeen provinces, five duchies and one kingdom. The empire of Aotearoa, in turn encompasses both island kingdoms.

If you have suggestions for better names, please feel free post a reply. The chances are, if you know anything about the subject, you know more than me.

As far as province names, I'd suggest these, from the south up:

Tonga -> Murihiku
Otago would be fine for what you have as Waitaki, though Waitaki kind of works too
Okahu -> this region has never really been inhabited so this one's difficult. I don't really have any suggestions
Timaru -> Tihi-o-Maru would be the more correct version - Timaru is a modern English rendering
Rangiora is probably fine although you could use Waitaha for either the province or a duchy which would include what you have in that red duchy at the moment but with Kaikoura instead of Aoraki (swap their duchies)
Paparoa could be Kawatiri or it could stay as is
Kaikoura is fine
Kahurangi is probably fine as well, I can't think of anything which would work better (it's a mountain range)
I can't read the province which is modern-day Marlborough, but Wairau is the name of the main river in that area and would work OK

I can't read Wellington's province either, but the full Maori name is Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui. That's probably a bit long and could be shortened to Te Upoko
Wairarapa is fine
Wanganui would be better as Manawatu
Pahiatua could be Waipukurau
Turangi should be Tongariro
Tutira is fine
Wairoa is fine
Tolaga should be Tolaga Bay, ideally
Whakatane is fine
Patea is fine (I can't give you anything better)
Taranaki is perfect
Waikato is fine
Tokoroa is fine
I can't read the province in Coromandel, but if it says Whitianga like I think it does that's fine
Tamaki is fine (although it should be accented on the first A and if you can't, double lettering for those accents is convention)
I can't read the top two provinces, but the very top one could be Aupouri and the next one down would be fine as Whangarei.

Thanks! Here are the conversions, as I currently have them.

Tonga -> Murihiku (This was a really, really lazy choice on my part.)
Waitaki (See below)
Okahu
Timaru -> Tihi-o-Maru
Rangiora -> did the province swap with duchy naming. It's better than my placeholder name anyway.
Paparoa -> Kawatiri (Sounds better :p)
Tahwitinui -> Wairau (Shorter is better, given the province size)

-----

Pakuratahi -> Te Upoko
Wairarapa
Wanganui is awkward at the moment, see below
Pahiatua -> Waipukurau
Patea
Taranaki
Waikato
Tokoroa
Whitianga
Tamaki -> Támaki (It does :) )
Kaukapakapa -> Whangarei
Parengarenga -> Aupouri

My duchies are a bit more awkward, because modern NZ regions really don't help, for the most part. Most of them, especially where I want them to be, are European names.

From bottom to top, most (all) of these are placeholders:

Otago (?)
Waengahari -> Waitaha (Even lazier than Tongu)
Motueka (???)

---

The southern part is currently Manawatu, though it doesn't fit too well. The rest, I have no idea. The 'middle' duchy I just have as Taranaki at this point. No idea where I'll go from there, is there a Maori word for the entirety of the long peninsula at the top?

EDIT: I've also placed the Maori in the polynesian culture group, given them their own religion in the catch-holder pagan group and gave each island it's own culture (not sure if they should be a single culture, or as is, or more). The cultures are boringly named Tonga (South) and Tuaraki (North), because I'm <sarcasm> an original and creature person with a deep knowledge of the maori language and culture </sarcasm>

thanks for helping.

Otago should be called Murihiku, and Te Tau Ihu would work for what you have as Motueka w.r.t. duchies.
Tāmaki should have a macron as the accent ideally.

For the N.I. duchies, I'd suggest Te Hiku (shortened version of the full name Te Hiku-o-te-Ika-a-Maui) or Te Tai Tokerau for the very top one. Te Upoko could be both a province and a duchy. Waikato is fine for the second one down, Taranaki also works well and for the far eastern one, Te Urewera should work.

Your division of cultures is basically fine, and North Island/South Island Māori would be the most appropriate names - they would all have called themselves Māori. You don't have a province for the Chathams, but if you were to add one that would be called Rekohu and the culture Moriori. (I wouldn't call that essential, but it could be interesting.)

Other than that, looks good!

Unfortunately, the Chathams are outside of the map's radius. I wanted to keep it 2048x2048 for the lower end PC users, and it was a toss-up between south east asia and ocean with a couple of islands. I'd say the current positioning is about as good as I'll get it without distorting or shrinking the maps I'm using as source material.

The name suggestions are welcome and encouraged, however. I'm from Adelaide, not New Zealand; I'd be no better mapping Turkey. If you guys can come up with a better province map, I'd love to see it.

One thing; I'm going to humbly request that, since this mod is called "A Land Down Under", at least one culture has a 500-man light infantry cultural retinue called "Men at Work". :p

I swear to god, a month ago I was working on this same exact thing (albeit, it was only Australia), but I couldn't get the map working. I can help with general graphical stuff. :laugh:

I'm good for most map stuff, but any other graphics sound great. This is a reboot of a -really- old mod I was making ages back, that got broken by the old gods expansion. I left it on 'permanent haitus' before eventually coming back to it after my hype on EU4 ended, and I had got some more mapping experience. I'm working on two mods at the moment, this one and another one for EU4, both mapping. Maps are such fuuuun.

Oh, right! Another thing of importance I need is Maori names. My current list is, uh, a bit lacking. At the moment, I have:
Code:
		male_names = {
			Arapeta Arana Amiri Hare Hahona Henare Irirangi Marama Rawiri
			Ropata Rua Ruru Rongo Mahuta Tangaroa
		}
		female_names = {
			Ahorangi Airini Aihe Ahurewa Arataki Areta Aroha Atarangi Haeata
			Hahana Hauku Hokaka Hine Marika Mahuika Marama Ngaio Ngaire Pania Whina
		}

Anyway, here's the current list of provinces and duchies.

South Island Counties:

I've been mulling over mechanics to make sure that more tribal nations, like those in Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia and a lot of Indonesia/Malaysia and the Philippines, more broken up and isolated.

My current idea is that, upon ruler death, any vassals that aren't de jure part of the heir's primary title are granted independence, and titles on the same level as the ruler are stripped or given away. This, combined with prestige requirements for forming higher titles, should hopefully mean that only rulers that are legitimately skilled, powerful and renown can create and hold higher titles, which is in turn the only way to keep lands in your dynasty for extended periods of time (short of handing the duchy titles to other family members. While that's a valid and good strategy, we all know how it can go wrong ;) )

This, while ensuring the AI doesn't inevitably form Aotearoa/Australia/Whathaveyou and create large, unified governments every single game (which makes no sense, even in this crazy alternate universe), should also hopefully add some interesting dynamics to these countries for the player. Trying to escape this mechanism through 'reforming the government' into a more civilized model requires certain levels of technology, and the easiest ways to gain this technology is to allow foreign trade ports into your city. However, these foreign trade ports can (and will) cause religious disunity and tension between more conservative vassals and peasants.

Good job on this project Zen! The map looks already really good and the colour scheme on the 1. dev diary is really great.
