Night in-game is 8 hour cycle moving across the globe. So 24:00 in-game doesn't mean everywhere in the globe is actually night.

50% night penalty (no doctrine/no tech)
40% night penalty (no doctrine/night vision I)
25% night penalty (doctrine/no tech OR no doctrine night vision I+II)
15% night penalty (doctrine/night vision I)
0% night penalty (doctrine/night vision II)

Because of how the modifiers works - (all modifiers are applied multiplicatively upon the base value of attacks/defense/etc. - with the note that night penalty only applies to attack values) -
We can get the following values of the effectivness increase during night hours
50% -> 25% - It's 50% more effective during night - Which could be averaged to 16.6% attack value increase over day
40% -> 15% - It's 41.6% more effective during night - Which could be averaged to 13.86% attack value increase over day
25% -> 0% - It's 33.3% more effective during night - Which could be averaged to 11.1% attack value increase over day.

Well, we know the air system breaks the day into a night cycle lasting 8 hours. One can guess the same system is used across game play.

Maybe I'm having a stroke, but I could have sworn the actual day/night cycle was dynamic based on latitude. Or am I misremembering a Dev Diary?

Still, with 8 hour nights globally (ha ha!), it's not a bad bonus as far as bonuses go.

Night system is 'dynamic', so it is not global night :p

Agreed I think that it's wonderful that a game can be so well designed that it can spur debate over what mechanic to do. It seems of little importance right now as most games are this complicated, but looking at the past where "pong" was groundbreaking it is amazing to see how far we've come in such a short time.
I'm so old I played pong in college. :(

I'm so old I played pong in college. :(

The only pong we had was either ping or beer pong. Still remember the frigging slide rules.

On the night subject, almost certain the land night combat is synced with the air combat, which iirc runs from 0100 to 0900 local time (which is the dynamic part).

What matters is whether or not the game actually counts a particular hour as night or day, not what the visual map says.

Do keep in mind that even though half the Earth is technically at night, sunrise and sunset are not total darkness. The actual periods of total darkness are less than you might think just from looking at the Earth's rotation.

I've lived in places where the sun sets for a long time, and illumination can last well into the "night" you would expect living somewhere else.

Stop expecting HOI4 to have realistic rules and concepts ;). Realism dies as soon as it runs into gameplay and design decisions.

Otherwise we wouldn't have 77 Axis divisions sitting in the Belgium Congo most games :cool:

AFAIK the HOI4 night/day is correct (barring map projection issues) and will change during the year.
