This will be my first city journal. I've played Cities Skylines over 1k hours and I love this game.
I started toying with this idea many months ago and it's come a long way. I like geometric shapes, and am a CAD user professionally. I thought it would be fun to see what I could create in SolidWorks and export to Cities Skylines. I drew the shapes in 2d, then took a screenshot (hi-tech, right?!), then colored them in various shades of grey for the different heights. LOTS of trial and error.
Once imported, finishing touches and testing were done with the Map Editor, and one hellish six way dual roundabout freeway intersection was created with the Asset Editor, which I inserted at every hexagonal intersection. The intersection itself is horrible, but oddly it works well. I tried to integrate a six-way train intersection into the freeway intersection - but gave up. In the end trains run through several of them but not all.
The main Import/Export area is located on the outer periphery of the Inner Harbor, so naturally I wanted the Generic Industry located adjacent to those areas, with Natural Resources adjacent to the Generic Industry areas. This left room for Residential on the outermost sections of the map - and ALL of the middle hexagon.
An isolated section was raised for sewage and four dams, with the water supply close by.
I laid out freeways and on-ramps in the center hexagon using the Map Editor. The idea was to upgrade them to roads in the game (saving having to do this each and every game). The idea worked out okay. The freeways sit just above the water, and below the crossing roads. This made for (mostly) easy on/off ramp attaching.
For purely visual effects, water was added in the middle of the center hexagon, and flows out to the Inner Harbor.
