Well, I tried to play as the USA before I was ready for a country that big. I was able to make a lot of money, and I picked up a few provinces from Mexico after getting involved in their war with Texas. This is how I ended up having the province of Los Angeles, separated by hundreds of miles from the nearest friendly lands.
I left LA for a while and when I checked back on them they had hundreds of thousands of people from two nationalities that I didn't recognize. One was Mahayana Buddhism and the other was Sunni Muslim. The population was about 1/3 Yankee, but most of them had converted to Islam. Well, I built some factories and put them to work.
I had an Indian revolt in Montana that I let go. After a while I got a message saying that Colombia had revolted against me. I didn't even know I had Colombia. I let them go peacefully (I had the option to go to war) and they somehow took Missoula.
Then England invaded the Yucatan, and dragged me into a war with Mexico. Mexico took over huge swaths of my territory because I had no army, even though Britain gave me about 250,000 troops in expeditionary forces when it became obvious I was doing nothing to stop the Mexicans. Mexico kept trying to give me nice peaces, only taking one or two provinces and making me pay war indemnities, almost as if they didn't want to take too much of my territory.
The Brits also put down some of my rebellions, and I got a lot of troops through partisans raising themselves during the Mexican occupation (BTW, they never invaded the one-state Confederacy). I ended up with manpower of -500 or so.
