Your pardon if the topic has been raised before -
Played a GC as Novgorod/Russia, and never experienced the Time of Troubles,
nor did I ever see Peter the Great OR Catherine II as monarchs.
Are events and monarchs somehow contingent on previous events? sliders?

still haven't used any patches, still vanilla

Also, now playing Brandenburg GC, I received a leader in early 1500s(yes!) named Alcibiades (who?). Has anyone else experienced this?
Hope you see the connection: I don't want to miss the Great Elector or Frederick the Great this time around ...

If you're saying you never patched the game yet do so! It will be an entirely different game.

I also believe that your Novgorod prob will be fixed by downloading 1.07 and the betas.

Albrecht Alcibiades was Margrave of Brandenberg in the 1550s. He's supposed to be there, so no worries. A lot of the Margraves in this period took on classical surnames, I think.

Time of Trouble can be avoided with the appropriate domestic policy sliders, you only get it with high centralization, aristocracy AND serfdom, so no worry here.

No, they don't depend on any event. You should get them both. May I ask whom did you get instead (and by any chance did you maybe get Pyotr Veliky instead of Peter the Great and Yekaterina II Velikaya instead of Catherine II :) )

thank you, Porcius - "Albrecht Alcibiades" is amazing! (but what an ill-starred name ...)
and thank you, robin74 - I should have known "veliky"= Great - but he had terrible ratings (I wasn't paying close attention, but the dots were orange in at least 2 categories) haven't seen Ekaterina yet - but then I'm still only in the 1770's
I know she showed up in 1762, but these leaders can be quite late ...

Thanks again - all this time I thought that I had done something to prevent Peter's appearance ...

What?
You sure you're not confusing him with someone else?
Peter the Great is THE best monarch in the game - he has all stats at maximum. There's really only a bunch of such guys in the game.
Maybe you checked at some negative events? Temporary insanity or something?
Plutocracy will also decrease his diplomatic rating.

That's odd because she should have turned up in 1762.

Temporary insanity ... that might have been it - I seem to get that event once per decade (is there a record for that?)
I've never steered for plutocracy (perhaps if I was playing England, or the Dutch) are there advantages that outweigh the diplomatic bonus for aristocracy?

Last page in the red ledger is a log of all important things that happened in the game. Unless you changed the default settings, it will also list all events that ever happened to you.

You could also open the save file in a text editor and search for an "insanity" string to get exact dates.

Higher trade and production efficiency (which means more money for you). And cheaper warships.
