Revenge is sweet indeed.

It just keeps getting worse for new England. Is it even possible for them to survive that supercult now?

but what about Arkham county in Massachussets? when are they going to find the capital of the cult?

Despite his fiery rhetoric, President Wheeler was content to open his term by giving the nation the rest it wanted.

The number one concern in the State Department (at least from my biased point of view) was analyzing the actions of the Domain of the Cult. For the moment, it appeared that our darkest fears about global unity against us were false; in August of 1877, the Domain of the Cult went to war with Russia, a fellow cultist nation.

We never discovered why Russia saw fit to attack.

Even the German Empire, created to oppose the dark global empire, lived in fear of it.

By early 1878, the world recognized our accomplishments in the Second American Civil war, and we were once again considered to be a Great Power.

In March, another militant group took up arms to demand New England return to the American fold.

They were quickly dispatched.

Despite Wheeler's reactionary policies, he signed a new National Health Act in late 1878.

In 1879, we abandoned our final attempts to take control of the portions of Africa in which we were in contention with the cultists.

upload_2018-12-16_17-10-19.png

Meanwhile in Europe, a crisis was beginning to unfold between Germany and Austria. As this was neither an affair of the cult, nor an event that directly affected our own country, the State Department paid it little mind.
upload_2018-12-16_17-17-6.png

This crisis spiraled into the largest non-cult war the world had ever seen.

In August, the government of the German Empire proved that knowledge of the cult was not sufficient to prevent it from taking over.
upload_2018-12-16_17-26-6.png

This raised a question: if knowledge alone was not sufficient to avoid cultist presence in an area, why was New England spared? My own department was doing little but observing and cataloging; what force prevent the cultists from practicing in the dark alleys of Boston? Despite my best efforts, I was never able to form a compelling answer to this question. If you are reading this journal in the hope of discovering one, I have left you all the evidence I could procure. Godspeed.

Wheeler, for his part, kept his focus on counteracting the Socialists.

On August 31st, Charles Grant, the most accomplished battlefield general in New English history passed away. Frederick Wright was extremely saddened; the two men had fought together in almost every city in New England, and many across the globe.
upload_2018-12-16_17-36-30.png

The Ottomans, interestingly, had been as resistant to the cult as New England until 1879. I tried in vain to discover what commonalities the two nations had the most of the world did not. In the end, I could posit no better answer than pure chance.
upload_2018-12-16_17-39-16.png

The most militarist decision Wheeler made in his tenure was to spend a massive portion of the national budget upgrading naval infrastructure.
upload_2018-12-16_17-40-52.png

Although we had backed down against the cultists, we were able to seize the last piece of Africa from the French.
upload_2018-12-16_17-41-59.png

The cult remained feared the world over.
upload_2018-12-16_17-43-18.png

In July, campaigning for the election of 1880 began. With the last major war a distant memory and a strong economy in full swing, the electorate seemed to be finished with their predilection for unorthodox politicians and returned to the standard battle between Democrats and Federalists. The Democrats nominated Hugh Talbot, a long serving senator who argued for a return to the modes of governance that had always ran New England. The Federalists ran Benjamin Long, an industrialist calling for a Laissez Faire economic policy. Wheeler also announced his bid for reelection.
upload_2018-12-16_17-50-23.png

When the first poll indicated that the Federalists were in the lead by a massive margin and that the rest of the vote was Democrats and Nationalists (with a small contingent of Socialists), Wheeler announced he was ending his campaign and endorsed Talbot, the only candidate he found acceptable.
upload_2018-12-16_17-55-18.png

The suspension of his campaign did not stop Wheeler from taking steps to suppress Socialists whenever possible.
upload_2018-12-16_17-56-55.png

Although we had written off South America to the cult ever since Columbia had fallen all those decades ago, it was not until late 1880 that Brazil finally gave in.
upload_2018-12-16_17-58-54.png

Spain and Portugal each fell that same week.

With a few impassioned speeches, and Wheeler placing his focus on supporting the Democrats, Talbot won the election by a margin significantly higher than predicted by the polls.
upload_2018-12-16_18-1-38.png

But, like the election of 1872, the results were overshadowed by horrifying news abroad. Despite going to war with the main cultist domain a few years prior, the cultists in Russia made the decision to join the empire in London, folding the entire massive nation into the Domain of the Cult.

The shock of this discovery was underscored for me personally when I learned that, on January 1st 1881, Former President Napier, founding father of New England, was found dead.

An update without combat? It's been a while.

Revenge is sweet indeed.

Yes it is. Although I don't think the USA would really consider it revenge.

but what about Arkham county in Massachussets? when are they going to find the capital of the cult?

All will be revealed, in time.

Well this is not good news. Will New England be the sole flame in the dark?

Huh...so...what, they all end up killing themselves as sacrafices? Kinda the only way i see you winning or surviving, unless you start your own cult with a better abomination god?

Intermission
Following the funeral of our first President and national hero Napier, I was summoned to his residence in Boston by the executor of his estate. There, I was told that Napier had left me a key to a particular storage closet in Miskatonic University and had given careful instructions that no one but myself be allowed to know about it. With considerable trepidation, I made the journey back to Arkham, clutching the key as if it unlocked the secrets of the universe. It very well may have.

The closet was located in an obscure wing of the disorganized library of the university, hidden behind stacks of unordered books. It was clear to me that no one had actually deliberately sought anything from the wing in some years. Having moved the books and opened the closet, I saw a filing cabinet with a note taped to the front:

To whoever discovered this wing:

If you arrived here, odds are you are looking for more information on the cult that is even now circling the globe. You have come along the right trail; this wing formerly contained the Necronomicon, the book from which the bulk of the cult’s knowledge and rituals derive. However, the book no longer rests here, which is fortunate for you; mere knowledge of its contents is enough to drive most men mad and join the horrific cult. Instead, this cabinet contains my notes from studying the cursed text. Only read them as a last resort as men have gone insane from less knowledge than exists in their pages.

At this point, I recognized the danger, and after some consideration decided that I personally would never read the documents. The lack of cultists in New England was the only bright spot in the collapsing world and I could not bear to risk being the downfall of my county.

I enlisted the help of a blind man to see what was in the cabinet. It happened to only be a dozen pages at most. Although neither me nor any of my colleagues ever read the pages, I have included them sealed in this narrative in the hope that the knowledge would be useful to you, my reader.

Journal of Johnathan Napier

December 1, 1820
Today, I thought again of the future of the United States. As I see it, the nation is actually three smaller nations, each with its own way of life. To the South, we have an aristocratic state taking wealth from the land on the backs of slave labor. To the West, we have a frontier consisting of young men conquering all the land they can from whoever already lives there. Only in the North is there a modern society, leading the world in industry and technology. In the long run, this nation cannot possibly hold together, but for now we are held back by the rest of the union.
MBWtgP0.jpg

Five years ago, we held a convention to secede from this rotten union. Although we failed at the time, the desire still exists among the people of New England. One day, I will lead us to freedom.

December 2, 1820
At heart, I have always believed in the value of ancient knowledge. 33 years ago, our founding fathers wrote a blueprint for the union based on the great philosophers of the past. Perhaps if the secret for creating a republic lies in the past, the secret for unmaking one does as well.

I will look through the archive of Miskatonic University, which contains the largest assortment of unsorted books in the nation. If some ancient secret is still yet to be found, I will find it here.
upload_2019-1-5_19-24-33.png

December 5, 1820
I believe I found something. In the darkest corner of the archive, I found a book entitled Necronomicon. It is written in Latin although it appears to be a translation of a much older work. There does not seem to be any record of such a book; I may very well be the first man to read it in centuries.

December 6, 1820
This may be what I was looking for.

December 15, 1820
This is it. This book contains more knowledge on the world than any other. I don’t understand, but I will.

December 31, 1820
This date was mentioned in the book. I don’t understand why, but it seems to divide human history into sections. This is the end of one.

January 3, 1821
I still have not figured out the meaning of the sections, but this book assigns them the highest importance. There are four ones listed: the start of the first is inconsistently listed as either 769 or 1066 and it ends in 1453, covering the middle ages. The second started in 1444, and ended earlier this week, at the end of 1820. The third will start in 1836 and end in 1936. The fourth will start in 1936 and has no clear ending. A few others are occasionally mentioned, far to the past or future. Further study is needed to determine the cosmic importance of the fact that a few days ago we have entered the only gap.
G5yFbaQ.jpg

June 18, 1821
I understand now. I did not want to before, but I cannot deny the truth. We are but pawns in a game played between gods. Over and over again, they reset the world to one of the sections and control the nations of man from the shadows. The affairs of nation states are but a toy.
x7FFQi7.png

December 30, 1821
As I study the book, I can feel myself begin to unravel. I can tell that the knowledge I have would have driven a lesser man mad, but I cannot possibly stop now. My goal is finally in sight.

February 1, 1822
This is it. If I can study what happened in the worlds before this in the upcoming cycle, I can have a power beyond any man has had before. I will know the future.

July 6, 1823
As long as I focus only on the actions of the small gods in their cycles, and not the old gods overseeing them, I can remain sane. The plan is coming together; I am carefully studying cycles where a nation managed to break off from another politically as well as ones where a small nation managed to survive a hostile world.

November 8, 1824
I looked at the part of the book detailing spells today. It hurt a lot and tried to draw me in further, but I got what I needed. New English independence is assured as soon as we enter the part of history that can be changed.

March 1, 1825
Disaster! Today, I neglected to lock the door to my study, and a curious professor walked in while I was not there. He read a section of the Necronomicon I dare not touch. I am terrified of the potential consequences.

March 2, 1825
It’s gone.

The professor kicked down my door and took the Necronomicon.

March 3, 1825
With help from the dark spell burned into my brain, I enlisted the help of the US Marshals to get it back. It isn’t likely, but I need that book.

March 15, 1825
It seems he fled the country with the book. I remember some, but not nearly enough to reach my goals.

August 20, 1825
With hindsight, it is for the best that the book was lost. My sanity was cracking beneath me, and it was unlikely I would have survived until the resumption of history. Now, I have time to restore myself.

December 3, 1831
I suppose I should give back to the university that gave me so much. With some help of my dark spell, I will go around the nation to find the most promising individuals, and convince them to join Miskatonic University in the fall of 1832. They should graduate just in time for the resumption of history.

January 1, 1836
It is time.

As suspected, it's all New England's fault.

That was wonderful.

After a few weeks, the twin shocks of the rise of the cult and death of Napier subsided and the nation returned to its usual activities.

A celebratory atmosphere returned to the nation in February when the Union was once again snubbed from the list of Great Powers.

Though lacking monetary value, our African colonies helped ensure our national prestige.

President Talbot signed an alliance with France soon after his election. As I later learned, the threat of the cult factored heavily into the negotiations.
upload_2019-1-16_21-43-30.png

In January of 1882, the Domain of the Cult declared war on France, demanding hegemony over their sphere of influence. France quickly invoked the terms of our alliance.
upload_2019-1-16_21-47-27.png

Talbot consulted his advisors, who gave a frank assessment of what such a war would mean for New England: total doom. Not wanting to be responsible for this outcome, Talbot called for an emergency session of the Senate and formally asked for a declaration of war. After much debate the vote was decided by a narrow margin: New England would decline the call to arms, betraying France.

The New York News reacted to what they saw as base cowardice by publishing a front page article comparing New England to the tiny nation of Liberia.
upload_2019-1-16_21-53-23.png

In July of that year we received another call to arms: The Confederacy was on the attack against the Union, seeking control over the historically disputed state of Missouri.
upload_2019-1-16_21-56-15.png

Eager to thrust a dagger into the heart of the nation's weakened enemy, Talbot agreed immediately.
upload_2019-1-16_21-58-26.png

An army was again pressed into service.
upload_2019-1-16_22-25-22.png

It is my personal belief that in war adversity breeds efficiency. Conversely, in this war we had the superior army while the brilliant tactics and skilled maneuvers New England had deployed in prior wars seemed to be absent. The opening battle occurred when New English forces recklessly charged up mountains to halt the American advance into the Confederacy.
upload_2019-1-16_22-31-0.png

Nonetheless, our super firepower carried the day.
upload_2019-1-16_22-32-36.png

With the expanded budget wartime brings, the Department of the Navy came up with a new ship class, larger and more powerful than any before it. None would be deployed until the end of the war.
upload_2019-1-16_22-34-16.png

France seemed to forgive us for our betrayal and offered us another alliance. Talbot accepted.
upload_2019-1-16_22-35-51.png

After the victory in the South, the army split in two. One section went back north to secure Pennsylvania, while the other recaptured Confederate land and took West Virginia.

upload_2019-1-16_22-39-23.png

As a response Talbot expanded the war to include the New English acquisition of Pennsylvania.

The United States did not agree to these terms, so we moved into Ohio.

This was capped by a string of victories against the remaining American forces.

In September, the United States surrendered, granting Pennsylvania to New England and Missouri and West Virginia to the Confederacy.
upload_2019-1-16_22-50-24.png

This had the bizarre effect of cutting off Maryland and the District of Columbia from the rest of the Union.
upload_2019-1-16_22-51-37.png

This time, the New York news chose to go a step farther, and not publish the peace deal on their front page at all, although they did cover several of our battles.
upload_2019-1-16_22-53-34.png

Also noteworthy in that paper is the rise of Cultist Pan-Nationalists in what was the strongest independent nation in South America, and another canal being built without New English expertise.

Once again, the European powers (especially the cult) were annoyed at what they considered unchecked expansion by New England. Once again, we offered to release a colony as a compromise, this time Southern New Guinea.
upload_2019-1-16_23-0-7.png

In the aftermath of the war, New England managed to earn a reputation as a great military power, feared by even the German Empire.
upload_2019-1-16_23-2-17.png

However, the United States gained some benefit from the war as well. Their victories against the Confederates managed to return them to the ranks of the Great Powers.
upload_2019-1-16_23-4-36.png

In late 1883, New England began building the first battleships.
upload_2019-1-16_23-5-42.png

A territorial dispute with Germany gave New England a chance to go to war. Recoiling at the memory of the War of the Atlantic, New England immediately passes it up.
upload_2019-1-16_23-8-23.png

The election of 1884 was a rather straightforward affair, a welcome relief from the last few turbulent cycles. The Democrats nominated Talbot for reelection, while the Federalists once again nominated Long. Neither the United Socialists nor Nationalists nominated a candidate that year, despite nearly splitting the vote between them eight years prior.
upload_2019-1-16_23-16-54.png

The result was a blowout for Talbot, decided almost exactly on the Democrat/Federalist lines that characterized the first few elections of New England.
upload_2019-1-16_23-18-19.png

Meanwhile, sections of the recent acquisitions of New England began to properly feel connected to the country.

upload_2019-1-16_23-20-38.png

upload_2019-1-16_23-32-11.png

At the same time, a major change was made to our education system. The Department of War was given a massive budget for research and development, to be performed through contracts with private industry. This was to be funded via drastic cutbacks in support for basic research at the various universities in New England. While this was a boon for our military and private industry (as well as my own pocketbook), it was disastrous for everyone doing basic research at universities like Miskatonic. In secret, I had voiced my support of the decision to the President; the threat posed by the cultists was too important to allow our nation to focus on anything else.
upload_2019-1-16_23-29-2.png

Mexico once again started their own follow-up war with the US.
upload_2019-1-16_23-30-55.png

In 1886, I took a moment to reflect on how bizarre our continent had become.
upload_2019-1-16_23-33-47.png

A pretty straightforward six years. We've finally hit the USA enough that we can beat them pretty consistently. Also, low CON and MIL makes elections way less stressful.

The cult capital is in London (UK formed them via gutter crown).

And yeah, they are scary.

Oh yes they do.
