I guess Bzy is the ultimate minor especially with the Fantasy events on AGCEEP, trying to reclaim the roman empire.

But any of the german or dutch minors would be a challenge, trying to survive and form a kingdom of your own, with France, Burgundy, Austria and Poland attacking you.

Or go exotic and feel the pain! :D

What would be a challenging minor (1 province) to play? What scenario? What set of goals?

If you are after challenging, you could try Orleanais, vanilla GC. The goal is staying alive! :D

Its not 1 prov, but I found Savoy pretty good. Quite a few possibilities, starts with a fleet as well as an army and has French and Italian culture. Lots of possible goals - uniting Italy, or replacing France as the French culture great power, or become a new Venice and control the Med, or ally with the Knights and launch a new crusade to turn back OE and liberate the holy land.

Try Wallachia, the Realm of Vampires! If you like, you could edit the monarch files, or add a few vampire leaders! Then, fight the turks back, and defend yourself against the might of Austria and Poland!

Navarra has two provinces, but is fun too. Three cultures, the possibility to become France (up to 1575).

Otherwise Lorraine and Savoy, for the cultures, are very good.

Mecklemburg gets a CoT (and german culture).

You should look in Sliver Legion's guide on what Nation to play.

I played Orleanis once and I lasted 10 months. I couldn't get the English to leave me alone, so though I took one of their provinces they FA'd me. I told the game to FO :D

I tried Luxembourg again and lasted 11 years.

What a difference from playing a major!

Are there any good guides out there which describe the skills and tactics needed to play a minor effectively?

Thanks.
The key word is : patience. You have to be very carefull in your dealings with majors, and you should only force-vassalize, never force-annex, to keep BB low. Starting with a CoT would help you diplo-annex later (hence the importance of Mecklemburg).

Ally to some major, and take provinces from other majors when possible (let your allies fight), preferably in defensive wars. As Luxembourg, ally to England, to enter the HYW, and try to grab Champagne and/or Nivernais, and peace out for one or two provinces before things get ugly. The other possibility is to turn against Burgundy, to grab some of their dutch provinces (especially Flandern).

In waging wars, the primary goal is to keep your army unscathed. You don't have the money nor the manpower to raise many reinforcements, so you have to avoid all battles (except, maybe, against just-raised new armies - if you know they're small and won't hurt you, whether in the fight or by attrition).

If you want to try medium-sized minors (those who aren't born victim ;) ), you can try Venice, Bavaria (caution...) or Marocco.
Or, although it's a two-provinces one, look at Grenada!
If you survive Iberian onslaught, it can be quite interestig (three culture, latin group...)

Oh, try the AGCEEP too...

I'd say go with Siebenburgen (sp?)

Wedged in between Hungary/Austria and the OE. My goal (never actually realized) was to secure all the Magyar provinces, boo-yah!

Yes, iberian, berber and arabic. Quite a nice expansive potential with that strait, no ? A lot of MP...

EDIT: BTW, other minor to intermediate countries also have a good amount of cultures, among which :
- Venice : italian, greek & slavonic
- Teutonic Order : german, balti & ugric
- Knights of Rhodes : french & italian at start, greek and maltese later
- Navarra : basque, french & iberian
- Byzantium : greek & slavonic at start, italian later
- Bohemia : czech, slovak & german (and you get to trash Austria soon :D )
- Manchu : start with manchu and han, and may get cantonese later
- a bunch of two-cultures minors : Savoy (french & italian), Lorraine (french & german), Britanny (gaelic & french), Alger (arabic & berber), Persia (persan & balushi - you need to add a line to load the file, and to remove province 529 from TIM file), Sibir (altai & mongol - same as Golden Horde), khmer (khmer & vietnamese), and I think that's all.

I think Pommern has German & Polish. And DoA French & Greek.
I think DoA would be a challenge, Pommern looks a lot easier.

True. I forgot them.

Poland will often DoW Pommern, while their alliance will also be DoWed (often at the same time) by the Union of Kalmar. So, I don't think they're much easier. But at least they've two provinces at start. And, due to these DoWs, if you're successful and skillfully manage your early wars, you'll be able to greatly expand in polish (eh, from Poland) and german provinces (from Denmark, once they've FA your allies).

OTOH, the DoA often takes Morea from Byzantium, but I'd advise against that, since the OE will force-annex Byzantium. Or, if you take Morea, break the truce immediately to FA BYZ (bad for BB, but safer for the cultures of neighbouring greek provinces).

"may" get cantonese?

is that event-based? if so, what's the sequence to ensure it?

Simply owning Hebei somewhere between 1683 and 1820, if China doesn't exist.
