Missed the start but am all caught up!

I love your AARs Blklizard, there always interesting to read.

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you really enjoy my AARs.

Looks like neither the Jarl or his advisor are very well versed in the concept of trade. Given how resource-focused Phoenix III appears to be, are you planning to conquer to get what you need (outside of what uniting Scandinavia will give you), or are you going to get trading? Either way is technically the Viking way.

This Viking campaign is rather short. The purpose isn't really into trading. I will be focusing on trading a lot more with my Portugal campaign.

I'd advise throwing merchants into every COT you can find, you'll rake in the money

I'm making quite a bit right now. There isn't many COT right now either.

Chapter 3

The Jarl just finished his business at the barracks when he meets up with the advisor. The advisor approaches him but the Jarl has nowhere to run.

Advisor: Jarl, where were you?
Jarl: I needed to relieve myself.
Advisor: You need to relieve yourself at the barracks?
Jarl: You see. The barracks has a great .... You don't believe me, do you?
Advisor: Why don't you come clean?
Jarl: I wanted to have our soldiers trained and armed like the Goth Noble Warriors.

chapter3a.png

Advisor: You cannot wait until our meeting is over?
Jarl: It was rather urgent.
Advisor: I see. Now that you got urgent stuff out of the way, I guess we can continue with our discussion.
Jarl: I thought we were done.
Advisor: We still have some things to discuss. Let's head to your studies.

The advisor turns around and walks towards the Jarl's study. The Jarl hoped to sneak away but, when he turns around, he sees two guards standing there.

Guard: Jarl, the study is behind you.
Jarl: Right. I must be getting tired.

The guards escorted the Jarl to his study and closed the door behind him.

Advisor: Is it fine if we make our nation more centralized?
Jarl: Sure, why not.
Advisor: Our people may not be too happy.
Jarl: Just do what's necessary.
Advisor: Yes, Jarl.

chapter3b.png

Advisor: We also got into three royal marriages.
Jarl: I couldn't care less.
Advisor: The Franks offered us an alliance.
Jarl: The Franks? Never heard of them.
Advisor: I'm afraid we don't even have them on our map.
Jarl: They are that small of a nation?
Advisor: Not exactly. We just haven't discovered any of their lands. However, there are rumors they are quite powerful.
Jarl: Then an alliance would be beneficial?
Advisor: Yes.
Jarl: Do it then!

chapter3c.png

Advisor: Yes, Jarl.
Jarl: Now that we are finished, please ask the guards to unlock the door.
Advisor: We still have some matters to discuss.
Jarl: Can't we leave it until tomorrow?
Advisor: Knowing you, we would be in a war tomorrow.
Jarl: You know me too well.
Advisor: First, it would appear we have plenty of weapons.

chapter3d.png

Jarl: Excellent! Our men will be well armed indeed.
Advisor: We also have options to construct buildings in our provinces.
Jarl: Like what?

The advisor takes out a small list.

chapter3e.png

Jarl: Me and my big mouth.
Advisor: We will start from the left. The one that is in blue.
Jarl: Looks like a road to me.
Advisor: Good observation, Jarl. A dirt road's biggest benefit is movement speed.
Jarl: Troops move quicker, right?
Advisor: Yes. We can move onto the red one. It's farming.
Jarl: Yawn. Who cares about farming?
Advisor: Farming provides manpower and more production.
Jarl: Okay, I care about farming.
Advisor: You should. Next on the list is clearing land.
Jarl: To make more houses?
Advisor: Yes, people are happier while we make more ducats.
Jarl: I like that. Ducats are great.
Advisor: Finally, we have black one. It's plantations that act like farms.
Jarl: They have same benefits as farms but cost more?
Advisor: The Gods decided on this, not me.
Jarl: Are you done now?
Advisor: You're talking as though I'm imprisoning you.
Jarl: With the guards locking the doors, you are indeed imprisoning me.
Advisor: Oh right. Well, it's your fault. Anyways, please don't start a war immediately.
Jarl: Well, ....

Yeah, there are a lot of buildings to build and not nearly enough magistrates to build them all. I'd suggest building brickworks in the provinces that can to provide the .75 magistrates bonus. Tanners are a cheaper alternative if there are no brickworks.

Thanks for the tip about brickworks. I will see what can be done.

Chapter 4

Jarl: ... you see.
Advisor: We are at war, aren't we?
Jarl: You already know? Why didn't you say so?
Advisor: What makes you think we are ready?
Jarl: They have a small army and their fleet is basically nonexistent.

lrc3.png

Advisor: I hate it when you underestimate your enemies.
Jarl: For once, I know you are overestimating our enemy. I will show you that we have this war already won.
Advisor: Don't come to me when this war gets out of control.
Jarl: We'll be fine. I assure you.

A few months later, news arrived from the front lines of a victory by a Viking regiment. The Jarl was overjoyed and believed that victory would be his shortly. However, the situation became worse a few more months later. The enemy has managed to quickly recruit a sizable regiment and won in a Viking province, Västernorrland. It didn't take long for them to take that province. The enemy proved to be more dangerous than expected and the Jarl began to worry about his chances of winning. He decided to see his advisor.

The Jarl found his advisor taking a nap under a tree. He quietly walks over.

Jarl: I need you help.
Advisor: zzz
Jarl: I need your help!
Advisor: Go away! I'm sleeping.
Jarl: This is urgent!
Advisor: Weren't you the one that said 'we'll be fine'?
Jarl: I may have underestimated our enemy a little.
Advisor: If it's just a little, then I guess you can take care of it.
Jarl: Fine! I don't need your help!

Few weeks later, news arrived from the font lines that the regiment sieging Umeå were defeated and the siege there was lifted. This wasn't the only problem though. The heavy recruitment of soldiers have resulted in the nation going from need for weapons to lack of weapons. The Jarl decided to see the advisor once again.

4h3.png
34k.png

Jarl: I'm really, really, really, really, really, really sorry.
Advisor: How many really was that?
Jarl: I'm trying to apologize here.
Advisor: Why are you apologizing?
Jarl: I have been foolish in my decision making because I chose not to listen to you.
Advisor: You are the Jarl. You can do anything you want.
Jarl: I realize my mistake. Please forgive me and help me out.
Advisor: How do I know you are sincere?
Jarl: I know you focus on economy. How about I do something that would help the economy?
Advisor: I'm listening.
Jarl: We have the honey producing province, right?
Advisor: I assume you know where that province is?
Jarl: Yes, but that's not important. The important thing is we can have that province produce wax.
Advisor: Well, has the sun rose from the west? The Jarl actually become smarter.
Jarl: Please help me!
Advisor: Look at this.

qrzk.png

The Jarl look at a report given to him. The report spoke of a great victory.

dtn.png

Jarl: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Advisor: You can let go of my hand now.
Jarl: Right! I will go to the barracks to get more soldiers recruited.

The Jarl runs off happily. The advisor continues to sit under the tree when a person on the tree spoke.

Woman: That went well.
Advisor: Indeed.
Woman: The Jarl may not be the brightest but his allegiance is definitely with the nation.
Advisor: Indeed.
Woman: Remember our deal. Keep this up and our nation will be great.
Advisor: Indeed.
Woman: Another indeed from you and you will get a beehive thrown at you.
Advisor: No thanks.

Chapter 5

The advisor entered the Jarl's chamber. The Jarl has been ill for two month and he wanted to know what has been taken place.

Jarl: I'm so glad you are here. What news do you bring me?
Advisor: We have more construction project available to us.
Jarl: Are you trying to bore me to death?
Advisor: These are important matters, Jarl. The tanner and blacksmith are of the extreme importance. They are costly but their benefits are great.

c5wc.png

Jarl: If this is all you wish to speak of, then please let me rest.
Advisor: Sometimes I wonder how you became the Jarl.
Jarl: Pardon?
Advisor: Wax is now being produced in Frederiksstad.
Jarl: About time. I didn't think they needed that much time to transition.
Advisor: The people there weren't exactly happy. However, the extra income will change their mind soon.

aten.png

Jarl: Looks like it's rather peaceful. How's my war going?
Advisor: We have two other wars taking place.
Jarl: Really? I didn't think you were that ambitious.
Advisor: They are defensive wars.
Jarl: I should've known. How are those wars going?

x03.png
4tsm.png

Advisor: The enemy cannot actually reach us. I'd say we have nothing to worry about.
Jarl: How about my war?
Advisor: We have liberated the province they occupied. We are now on the offensive.
Jarl: Great!

mmsu.png

Advisor: We have also occupied and seized one of their provinces. Their army is retreating as we speak.
Jarl: I'm guessing the people don't like us too much.
Advisor: The people already see you as their ruler. They have sworn their allegiance.
Jarl: So they fear me?
Advisor: Yes, Jarl. They are very afraid of you.
Jarl: You sound sarcastic.

Advisor: On the topic of your son.
Jarl: I have a son?
Advisor: Your wife just gave birth to a son.
Jarl: She did?
Advisor: I should let you rest. You are definitely ill.

Chapter 6

The Jarl was soon well enough to decide on affairs within his realm. A lot has happened during that period and he wanted his advisor to update him.

Advisor: Jarl! How nice to see you up. Are you well enough to be out of bed?
Jarl: Of course I am! I heard our war is going quite well.
Advisor: Yes, we have taken Luleå. The Sapmi are in a full retreat.

ggfv.png

Jarl: I see victory will be ours soon. Maybe I can prepare a feast?
Advisor: I would rather have someone else deal with food. You are the last candidate for that job.
Jarl: Why?
Advisor: Remember your last birthday?
Jarl: It was an accident!
Advisor: Accident or not, I'm not letting you near the food this time.
Jarl: You're such a party pooper.
Advisor: By the way, the general sent some deer from Luleå.
Jarl: Deer?
Advisor: It's an animal that you hunt in the north.

9bu3.png

Jarl: I love hunting. Maybe I should hunt these deers once the war ends.
Advisor: Please refrain from shooting your own guards with arrows.
Jarl: That was an accident too!
Advisor: I think I should quit this job. You have way too many accidents. Anyways, we occupied Tornio.

twxb.png

Jarl: Why haven't we taken it?
Advisor: It's their capital. They aren't willing to surrender that easily.

A messenger entered with a letter. The advisor took a look and sighed. He dismissed the messenger before speaking with the Jarl.

Advisor: I guess this is an accident as well?
Jarl: What?
Advisor: The war against Devliani?

nzmn.png

Jarl: Oh that.
Advisor: ...
Jarl: You see, I may have been talking in my sleep. A general may have misunderstood.
Advisor: ...
Jarl: Honestly, that's why we got that war.
Advisor: ...
Jarl: Alright! I was responsible. Are you happy now?
Advisor: Not really. I have to clean up another one of your messes. I should've listened to my father and became a ship builder.
Jarl: At least our war against Sapmi is going well.
Advisor: Yes, we recently took two more of their provinces.

yfvv.png
h05k.png

Jarl: I heard that two other wars have ended.
Advisor: ...

8m0.png

Jarl: What?
Advisor:Have you heard about our cavalry?
Jarl: What about them?
Advisor: Some of them are training to be infantry.
Jarl: That's ridiculous! Why would they do that?
Advisor: We don't have enough horses.
Jarl Oh....

Chapter 7

Jarl entered the advisor's study to find him packing things.

Jarl: I was wrong. Please don't leave.
Advisor: Give me a good reason why I should stay.
Jarl: Who else can clean up my mess?
Advisor: I'm sure a lot of people can.
Jarl: You're the only one that clean it up well. Please!
Advisor: ...
Jarl: Pretty please!
Advisor: ...
Jarl: Pretty please with a longsword on top!
Advisor: If I say yes, can you shut your mouth for the remainder of the week? No orders or anything.

The Jarl nods. The advisor shoos him out of the study and prepares some documents.

(Several months later)

Advisor meets with the Jarl.

Advisor: First of all, the war against the Sapmi is going well. We have crushed their main regiment in Trondheim. Of course, our army isn't the only one gaining glory in battle. Our navy has won a decisive naval victory that saw two ships captured.

zho3.png
x5nh.png

Jarl: That's most excellent news! I've also heard that we've taken two more provinces from the Sapmi.

a13q.png
uu3.png

Advisor: Indeed. The Sapmi are severely weakened now. They can barely muster a large enough regiment to challenge our small regiments.
Jarl: Excellent! I knew this war was a great idea.

The advisor stares the Jarl down.

Jarl: I meant it was a horrible idea. We were fortunate to get so lucky.
Advisor: Yes, we were fortunate to have great generals leading the regiments and great soldiers.
Jarl: How about the other war? Is it going as planned?
Advisor: We attempted many landings but they fought off all invasion. We were unable to gain a foothold.
Jarl: Oh dear. Will they be attacking us?
Advisor: Not with our superior navy blocking them.
Jarl: That's excellent news!
Advisor: ...
Jarl: How fortunate!
Advisor: Luckily, they were tired of the war. We got a white peace with them.

rk0w.png

Jarl: We now just have to deal with Sapmi, right?
Advisor: Yes, we continue to win victories there. That war should conclude shortly.

sp74.png

Jarl: Well, you are indeed the best man for the job. What rewards do you want? We've managed to get a fair amount of loot.
Advisor: I would like a month of rest.
Jarl: That's something I cannot allow. I'll be lost without you around.
Advisor: I feared that.
Jarl: By the way, I heard that the Saxons want an alliance with us.

vunh.png

Advisor: You heard right.
Jarl: I think it's a good idea having a safer southern border.
Advisor: For once, I agree with you.

Chapter 8

The Jarl was discussing with his advisor regarding his influence in the region

Jarl: Many nations must have heard about my nation by now, right?
Advisor: Not quite. We are still largely unknown in Europe.
Jarl: You're kidding.
Advisor: I'm quite serious.
Jarl: What must I do to right this situation?
Adivsor: We could give up some prestige to expand our influence over weaker nations.
Jarl: That will help us?
Advisor: Yes, other nations will notice us since they will think twice before attacking weaker nations.
Jarl: Who should we influence next?
Advisor: Bodrichi is a good choice.

9n8.png

Jarl: I understand that we need more ducats. I recall you mentioning about the importance of trade.
Advisor: Trade can bring in a lot of income, especially for small nations. For us, the benefit is a larger army.
Jarl: I'd like that. Where should we be sending our merchents?
Advisor: We can send them to a domestic centre of trade, Kola.
Jarl: Kola? We own that province?
Advisor: We took it from the Sapmi.
Jarl: Right! Now I remember. How nice of them supplying us with it.
Advisor: That's for sure.

9cjs.png

Jarl: I guess that's it! Time for me to enjoy the sunshine.
Advisor: We're not done it.
Jarl: You're kidding! There's more? Can it wait until tomorrow.
Advisor: No. It's regarding you and the future of this nation.
Jarl: What's so important! How come I don't know about it?
Advisor: Where's your son?
Jarl: My son? I don't have a son. Oh ....
Advisor: How will you solve this
Jarl: ...

3jsz.png

Several months later, the Jarl was faced with a scandel that could devestate his nation. He desperately asked for advice from his advisor.

Jarl: Please, there must be a way to solve this.
Advisor: ...
Jarl: People are suspecting what took place.
Advisor: There is one way to solve this.
Jarl: How?
Advisor: Name the child your heir.

Chapter 9

The Jarl was holding his son when his advisor entered.

Advisor: Jarl, I wish to speak with you.
Jarl: Alright, give me a second.

The Jarl put his son back into the crib before leaving the room with the advisor.

Advisor: We have great news from the front lines.
Jarl: Really? Tell me.
Advisor: We've occupied the last Sapmi's province and took it.
Jarl: Does that mean the war is over?
Advisor: Yes, we demanded their annexation after taking the last province.
Jarl: Good, good. I'm glad the war is over.
Advisor: You sound relieved. I thought you wanted the war to last longer.
Jarl: I'm a changed man. I just want to spend more time with my son.

qv85.png
52p.png

Advisor: What did you do with the Jarl?
Jarl: Very funny. If there anything else?
Advisor: First, the Gods have spoken about our future.
Jarl: Really? Tell me what they command us to do.
Advisor: With peace, we can now create a great nation called Scandinavia.
Jarl: Scandinavia? I like that name. The world will fear this name. So, is there anything else?

948o.png

Advisor: The Franks asked us to join them in a war they started.
Jarl: Those warmongers. I will honor their call but get us out of the war as soon as possible. There's not much we can gain from the war.
Advisor: Understood. By the way, we discovered a very large fish. The people of former Sapmi call them whales.
Jarl: I've seen large fish before. What's so different about these ones?
Advisor: They are larger than our ships.
Jarl: Oh...

c89.png
ewmy.png

Advisor: Meanwhile, we are still paying large sums to get people to colonize.
Jarl: That is excellent! Peaceful expansion is always welcomed.
Advisor: Are you really our Jarl?
Jarl: Yes, being a father changed me.
Advisor: It would appear so. One more thing. There are rumors that the Franks might be starting another war soon. What is your response?
Jarl: Honor it and get out of it. I have no intention making them even stronger.

Chapter 10

The advisor met with the Jarl at gatehouse.

Jarl: It's a great view, isn't it?
Advsor: You do know that we have business to discuss?
Jarl: Of course, let's get to it, shall we?
Advisor: First, why did you invest in rock relief?
Jarl: It seemed interesting.
Advisor: What benefit does it give us?
Jarl: Do I always need a reason to build something?
Advisor: If you're using ducats from the treasury, then yes.

p38i.png

Jarl: The ducat is already spent. Anyways, are you here to discuss about the minor expenses?
Advisor: I wouldn't call this a minor expense. We have allies that like to declare wars. We need the ducats to maintain a large standing army and navy.
Jarl: The war with Thuringia is over, right?
Advisor: It was over months ago.
Jarl: Was it? Felt like yesterday.

6lob.png

Advisor: You do know that we have war currently, right?
Jarl: We do?
Advisor: ...
Jarl: Ha, just toying with you. You should have seen your face. It was priceless.
Advisor: Who are we at war with?
Jarl: Testing me, are you? We are fighting against the Saxons. They attacked the Franks.
Advisor: Glad you know that much.

j7vf.png

Jarl: You underestimate me, my friend. I also know that we had a tough battle at Flensburg. The Saxons decided to attack us first. They heavily outnumber us and our reinforcements weren't due to arrive for a month. Things looked bleak.
Advisor: What did you do with the Jarl?
Jarl: Let me finish! Despite being outnumbered, we won a decisive victory at Flensburg. The Saxons were routed and we gave chase. We annihilated them at Kiel.
Advisor: I'm surprised you knew that much.
Jarl: Let me surprise you more then. Kiel fell to the Saxons soon after the war began. They were driving deep and got halted. As a result, they not only failed to make good progress but also made themselves very vulnerable.

Advisor: Well, we have taken three of their provinces. They are trying to lift the sieges. However, they have definitely lost the war.

Jarl: Indeed, they were trying to reinforce by recruiting troops in the rear. However, we took cared of that.
Advisor: Sending ships down the river was brilliant. We got more troops to the front lines where we wiped out the small Saxons regiments.

Chapter 11

The Jarl entered his study to find his advisor putting a large stack of documents on his desk.

Jarl: Did you just collect all the great works and put them on my desk?
Advisor: Very funny, Jarl. Your humor never cease to entertain me.
Jarl: Please tell me I don't need to go through all of these.
Advisor: If you start now, you could finish half the stack before you die of old age.
Jarl: ...
Advisor: I can give you a summary of all this.
Jarl: Please go ahead.
Advisor: First, we have taken more provinces from the Saxons.

88bo.png

Jarl: I'm liking this very much! How close are we to conquering all of Saxons?
Advisor: The Saxons control a lot of land. It will be awhile. Don't forget that the Franks have their eyes on the Saxons as well.
Jarl: Order our troops to attack faster. We must take more than the Franks.
Advisor: I will have to agree with you there.
Jarl: How are the people accepting us in newly conquered provinces?
Advisor: The people are getting accepted by us. They won't be revolting as often.

gnri.png

Jarl: They are accepting my rule already? I always knew I was a great ruler.
Advisor: ...
Jarl: What? I'm speaking the truth here.
Advisor: ...
Jarl: Anything else you wanted to report?
Advisor: We have taken the Saxons' capital. Their king managed to escape.

xc3z.png

Jarl: I guess we don't need to worry.

The Jarl decided to pick a document from the stack and found himself looking at the military document.

Jarl: Why do you have this here? Don't we know all this? I guess you're trying to emphasis the fact that our navy is lacking.
Advisor: Not quite. There is something you must check.
Jarl: What?
Advisor: War exhaustion!
Jarl: What war exhaustion?
Advisor: You are very observant. We haven't gained any war exhaustion despite fighting this long war.

irdv.png

Jarl: How about the actual war?
Advisor: We took more provinces.
Jarl: Hurray! What should we do with our navy?
Advisor: We can capture ships.
Jarl: From who?
Advisor: The Saxons, of course.
Jarl: They have a navy?
Advisor: Yes.
Jarl: Why would they have a navy?
Advisor: They need to control the rover.
Jarl: Right.
Advisor: We won a victory in the river delta and got two more ships.
Jarl: Wonderful! We will have the Saxons build our navy.
Advisor: ...
Jarl: What?

dxav.png

Advisor: Let's return to the war.
Jarl: More provinces taken?
Advisor: Yup.
Jarl: This is getting boring.
Advisor: Yes, it is.

p8bi.png

Jarl: Is that all you have to report?
Advisor: The Franks just ended the war.
Jarl: ...
Advisor: ...
Jarl: ...
Advisor: ...
Jarl: What?
Advisor: ...
Jarl: We still can take more provinces!
Advisor: The king of Franks didn't care.
Jarl: That bastard!
Advisor: ...
Jarl: Excuse me as I leave here.
Advisor: There's one more thing.
Jarl: What?
Advisor: They had a Thessaly Reconquest Casus Belli.
Jarl: A what?

cx7e.png

It always seems nations end up with weird holdings in EU3, and the French (or the proto-French Franks, in this case) are no exception.

As silly as it seems, I get the feeling this was caused by the Saxons getting their hands on Thessaly, but I don't have access to your save so I can't (and probably shouldn't) make such hypotheses.

Chapter 12

The Jarl was taking a nap when his advisor entered.

Advisor: Jarl?
Jarl: zzz
Advisor: Jarl!!!
Jarl: What is it? Can't I take a nap in my own study?
Advisor: You can take a nap once we have dealt with everything.
Jarl: Alright, you get it started then.
Advisor: First, we paid enough people to start a colony in Oulu.

c4y.png

Jarl: Good for them. They get paid well to start a new life.
Advisor: Their new life isn't easy. They have many challenges ahead of them.
Jarl: Next!
Advisor: One of our colonies is located at a fish rich area.

2yoq.png

Jarl: Who needs fish? I have pork roast.
Advisor: ...
Jarl: Anything else?
Advisor: You sound very grumpy.
Jarl: Of course I am. You disturbed my nap.
Advisor: We have discovered that the Franks follow a religion called Early Catholicism.

r613.png

Jarl: Early what?
Advisor: Catholicism. They follow a single God.
Jarl: Are they crazy? Following one God.
Advisor: They feel we are misguided.
Jarl: The feeling is mutual.
Advisor: Did you receive the gift sent by the courier?
Jarl: Yup, it was a bunch of fragile rocks.
Advisor: They are clays.

d9jv.png

Jarl: So that's what they call it. It's totally useless.
Advisor: ...
Jarl: Anything else?
Advisor: We expanded our influence over the Saxons.

4piv.png

Jarl: Why?
Advisor: Their leader misled them. We just want t show them that we are willing to offer them protection.
Jarl: That's good for my image?
Advisor: Yes.
Jarl: Keep up the good work then.
Advisor: I've been reading some old records and came across something interesting.
Jarl: Tell me.
Advisor: Apparently, some of our ancestors found new lands. I thought it was a myth but they have left behind in records or a group of people called Wabanaki.

ptem.png

Jarl: That's a weird name. What do we know about them?
Advisor: The records only mentioned their existance. There wasn't a lot of details regarding the people.
Jarl: Why did you mention them then?
Advisor: Just wanted to give you a heads up that there's new lands to be conquered across the sea.
Jarl: Please tell me we are done.
Advisor: There's one last thing. We have set up another colony.

However, the Jarl was already asleep by then.

Chapter 13

The advisor followed the Jarl to his study.

Advisor: Did you actually think the war for the Saxon throne was a good idea?

nlmj.png

Jarl: Are you still angry about the war?
Advisor: You angered many of our neighbors. The consequences could've been very bad.
Jarl: What did you suggest to me?
Advisor: Another colony.

Jarl: Am I supposed to be impressed by your suggestion? I'm getting tired of expanding slowly through colonization. We won't have all of the north before I die.
Advisor: Being a ruler isn't all fun and war.
Jarl: It should be.
Advisor: You're putting this nation in danger.
Jarl: Stop joking around. Did you remember what happened at the start of our war against Saxons?
Advisor: None of Saxons' allies entered to aid them.

Jarl: Now do you see how wise I am?
Advisor: Even a squirrel can get lucky and find food in the winter.
Jarl: ...
Advisor: Do I need to remind you of the land grab?

Jarl: It was good land! They didn't need it. Honestly, I'm doing them a favor.
Advisor: You did something right, at least.
Jarl: Really?
Advisor: Taking ships from them was a great idea.

Jarl: Yet, you wasted more money on expansion through colonization.
Advisor: It's called an investment.
Jarl: Investments that give little back. Why waste time on undeveloped provinces when we can take developed provinces?

Advisor: If you are so smart, why do you still need me by your side?
Jarl: I wonder about that myself.
Advisor: ...

The advisor left the room. Soon after, a messenger entered the study.

Messenger: Jarl, we have received word from the front line. The Saxons have been annexed.
Jarl: ...
Messenger: Jarl?
Jarl: You may leave.
Messenger: Yes, Jarl.

Chapter 14

The Jarl sat alone in his study. He checked the reports on the situation of his nation. People from two of his colonies had begun the production of items that would benefit the nation itself. Seeing the colonies slowly growing and benefiting his nation, the Jarl realized that, in the long term, colonies were indeed a great investment. Realizing the potential of peaceful expansion, the Jarl decided to order a new colony being made in Hamar.

Not long after the colony was created in Hamar, the Jarl was told that there was a breakthrough in production technology. The improvement in the technology made it possible to improve the farms in Scandinavia. The farms would increase production yield and add manpower to the nation.

The Jarl once again returned his attention to colonies. Another colony had begun its production while the Jarl started a new colony in Jämtland. The Jarl suddenly felt old with the departure of his advisor. He enjoyed the company of his advisor. The two of them argued often but they always put their nation's interest first. The last fight got out of hand with the Jarl alone dealing with everyday issues of his nation.

This is a short update. The next chapter will conclude our journey with the Vikings. I hope I can start my game with Han Zhou soon.

Chapter 15

Dear diary,

This will be my last entry. I would like the speak of my accomplishments in my final years as the Jarl. A war against Bodrichi was started to expand eastwards. They stood no chance against our mighty soldiers and the war was over quickly with their annexation. What did that war accomplish? Looking back, I saw the war only accomplishing making more enemies. Our neighbors began to fear us. They see our conquests as hints to our future goals. Even the Franks weren't too happy about our decision to attack a smaller nation. We lost too much for the little bit of land we gained.

To cheer up our people, I ordered a national festival. However, the big expense we spent proved to be a waste. Other than a bit of prestige, the festival proved to be useless. Our people weren't impressed by my efforts. Instead, they hated me for wasting ducats. First, I angered our neighbors. Next, my people hate me. It's obvious that my time as the Jarl has ended. Time for a new Jarl to step up and lead our great nation. Looking at the great nation known as Scandinavia, I feel pride. It has grown so much under my rule and much of the credit goes to the advisor that left me. I wish he stayed by my side and helped me make the nation even greater. However, it would appear that I won't be given a second chance.

Our nation is quite powerful in the known world. Our income is only second to the great Byzantine empire. We are honored to have progressed this much. Our army may not be the greatest in the world but, in the north, we are indeed the most feared nation. Our navy is a shame but I have no doubt that my successor will make it great. We have the funds to create a powerful navy to command the seas. Our centre of trade in Gotland has proven to be very rich indeed. This place will continue to get richer as my successors continue their conquests.

With great promise, I leave this great nation to the future generations. With the pride of the Vikings, I know they will rise above all. That would include the Byzantines. I feel old and tired. My journey in this world has ended. My death will lead to a new beginning for our nation. One that will be bright. I cannot even imagine what my successors will accomplish but I have faith they will do me proud. Goodbye world! With the poison in my hand, I wish you well. This old man have left behind too many regrets and failures. I know the world will be a better place without me. Goodbye!
