If there will be more seazones, it would be cool to have the possibility of mining seazones (but only coastal ones, not deep waters !!!)

This could be like 3 steps, level 1-3, which give a %-chance
(example 5%; 10%; 15%.....mathguy will now best values)
of making damages to enemy ships (should be shown as a symbol in the seazone)
Ships for minelaying could be minelayers (new unit) or cruisers.

A lot of ships in WWII were lost due to mine damages.

I think this is not too heavy to implement.

Yes that would be rather abstract (s?). So how would they be used, tied to the sides of the ship.

Ok i get it, just having a laugh

But if you abstract them, the efficency is only for seabattles with own ships related, but mines do their work alone without own ships. So the trick is to defend seazones a little bit without the need of own ships in this seazone.

Another possibility to abstract them is a menu like in landprovinces (infra, antiair, IC....), were you can build minefield-levels in coastal seazone near your controlled coastal province.

I'd like to see this happen, it would add a whole new dimension to blockades(in other words; it would make them more realistic).

Hmmm....after thinking and thinking, I like this idea

Maximum of level 5, to improve minefield could take 180 days for each level.
Chance of hitting ships:
Level 1 2%
Level 2 4%
Level 3 6%
Level 4 8%
Level 5 10%

But the costs......shouldn't be too cheap and also needs some special techs, because we don't want to see all coastal provinces totally mined throughout the world :D

Few thoughts:

1) One should also be able to clear out sea-mines.
2) A ship must come in to sea zone and lay (clear) mines.
3) Mines were also dropped from planes.
4) The damage in real life was much higher than 10% IMHO.
(I think Germans choked one of the seaports in Africa with mines. It was
unusable for transports.)
5) Laying mines was inexpensive and fast IMHO. => Mines would be everywhere in the game
(including lakes :D).
6) The damage to transport ships is the most important.
7) AI will make a mess of it. There is no way that the AI will know what it is
doing. It requires a level of strateic thinking where to lay mines. I bet they
would sink thier own ships.

I disagree. Laying mines is not just a defensive move (preventing sea-landings).
I want to be able to lay mines along enemy's coast and inflict damage to transports.

Yes you're right, it was just a thought to make it as simple as possible, but the better way would be to lay mines with ships in every coastal or undeep waters.

@Fat Nr.5: Yes, but if you make it too cheap, the hole world would be mined in a few years and no fleet could travel without loosing most of their ships.
And that is unrealistic. You also should think strategical in where to lay mines and where not.
Maybe you can raise the damage a little bit (this values were just thoughts)

Make it like convoy interception!
You loose strenght and org when "intercepting" the mines in a sea sone with mines.

I think that considering the scale of HoI2, mines should be included, because mines in naval warfare can be used as a strategic weapon. The Gulf of Finland was completely isolated by mines, which led to that the Soviet Baltic fleet basically sat out the war in Kronstadt. Also, there was the incident of Brits mining the coastal waters of Norway before the German invasion.
