Well, i just started with the sprites, at least I'm gonna complete USA.
You should take a few days from modding, indeed it's exhausting, and unfortunately there's no check at the end of the month :sad:

Yeah, the only problem with that is we can't use vector formats for graphics. But Inkscape will be useful for other things I might try soon

nach: The reason I mentioned dpi and inkscape, was because I'm still fascinated how Francisco gets the quality he gets in his bitmaps. I did ask him, but got no reply. Just today I noticed... I had to draw the star in inkscape and started working on reducing the size of the cavalry (way tooooo big), that I could set the dpi to anything.. but of course, setting it too high, just made it worse, so I had to play around and found at 100 dpi was probably best?

I find reducing in inkscape to a .png, and then open the .png in GIMP and take it from there.

No check. Yeah, tell me about it...

But seriously, if you want to do Germany (I KNOW, they're probably the best.. the most-est kudos, myth, status... need I go on..) then do some real kick-ass ones... REAL BADD ASS.. know what I mean?:ninja:

I hope you don't mind a bit of constructive criticism.

Nearly everything I've seen so far has impressed me, but I do have a couple of reservations.

1. The HQ star doesn't look right at all. It would be much better to have an officer or a staff car.

2. It was a good idea to make use of the icons for the infantry, but the head-and-chest view doesn't look right somehow, especially when set against whole vehicles.

3. The infantry sprites also take up too much space on the map and look too big when compared to the vehicles.

Now for the constructive part. Your idea of using the icons from Darkest Hour Full got me thinking. Have you ever seen Titan79's Tripartite Pack for Arsenal of Democracy? Among other things, it has new icons for the game that include full-view pictures of infantry for various levels.
Not only are there various levels, there are also various types of unit (marines, paratroopers, etc). Couldn't you use these? (after asking Titan79 of course) The only problem is that because its for AoD there aren't any pre-WWI icons.

I wasn't aware of Titan79's pack, but I'll go have a look.
I love the Star for the HQ, and I've seen it in-game, and to me it's good. It stands out better than before and can been seen immediately, which is what I wanted.

Chest and Heads and basically Size overall:
You see, the overall problem with HOI2, is that the game works only with bitmaps. Bitmaps are pixels, 1-colour per pixel, and you really need a certain overall size to get any image at all. Going smaller has 2 problems:
1: I'm nearly done, and I'd have to re-do everything.
2: Going smaller would mean less definition and clarity to the image. I'd rather have a bigger map and bigger images ... But that's not going to happen?
3: In-game, using the OOB images, the player can easily see what infantry he has, as the 1936/39/42/45 infantry units are totally different.. wheareas before you'd have to click on the unit on the map, (the worms) and then look at the OOB to see what have I got here?

Even with cavalry, I need to have a certain size so you can see the soldier and the horse with some level of quality. The cavalry I did before, was twice the size, so I've had to make it smaller, but still trying to maintain some quality. I'm now thinking I'll have to cut the legs off.... more Chest and Heads... just so I can maintain some kind of clarity and quality...

Overall, this is only a first attempt...

I did do a tutorial on making sprites, I think it's in the Mod section, useful tools or some such.

But yes, I take on board what you said, a lot I agree with... but I'm still left with a solution.. and I don't have one... But I'll take a look at that pack and see if it helps me out.

Hmm....I think the Tripartite Pack one looks better, but I admit that it doesn't look quite as good as I thought it would. Maybe I prefer it just because I think a whole figure looks better. It certainly takes up less space on a small province.

Perhaps other people could give their opinion?

I do think that both versions look better than the worms, so even if you prefer the DH icons I think that you should do infantry as well.

Anyway, if people don't like the HQ sprite they can always just delete it from the files and use the default infantry sprite instead.

I'm pleased to announce a 2D Sprite Mini-Mod for Darkest Hour.

I will be posting the Mod here by the end of the week. :)




2D Germany Mini-Mod:

I've done:

Infantry
Light Panzers
Medium Panzers
Heavy Panzers
Mechanised
Motorised

Generic (1 does all levels):
HQ
Cavalry
Militia
Garrison

Not done:
Mountain

Mod is for World War 2 only, although some sprites already done for WW1, are included.

Instructions for use:

Copy your DH original gfx/map/units folder AND gfx/palette folder to a safe place.
Extract the file 2DMOD_GERMANY
You will get 3 folders; bmp, palette and spr files.

Copy and Paste the contents of the mod folders as below:

Mod Palette folder to your DH gfx/palette folder

Mod spr files folder to your gfx/map/units folder

Mod bmp files folder to your gfx/map/units/bmp folder

If you get tired of the mod, please simply delete the folder as it is, and replace it with your original units and palette folders.

I hope you enjoy the mod. Please remember, this is a first attempt to do 2D sprites for DH. I've enjoyed doing the mod. I encourage you to have a go and make your own sprites.;)

It's a coincidence that they both have the same camoflage, I've done others... :D
