I'm a horde, have been paying them, 59 trust, +opinion, have royal marriage.
As soon as I press pay the yearly tribute at one particular year, the tributary is broken.

Fun part, after they broke it, I get to ALLY THEM, and they will accept from +50 overlord attitude.
Bug I guess?
at least if I ally Ming they will defend me from coalition LOL
Any idea how or why this happened?

Maybe due to GP score being similar? I have no idea. But in your case it wasn't even close.

Other possibility is this, I would think any additional condition by which your tributary status can be ended would have been put into the patch notes:

- Tributaries and daimyos now do power balancing internally in realm.

@DDRJake @Chaingun - would being power balanced against also include your tributary relationship being broken out of the blue?

What I did notice is that Ming doesn't have its neighbors at all marked as vital interest for me which is ... odd. Did you check his strat / vital interest map mode by any chance?

I did, check the video. I checked EVERYTHING.

Vital interest, trust, opinion, RM, paying/not paying that year, making a new ally (vijay)
which oddly, the time they break it is NOT consistant at all.

Florry suggests having vassals is a cause of this.

I had vassal, Siu-King had vassal at the time of this. What is everyone else's experience?

Doesn't explain it all.

I had a vassal long before that - I no CBed Bengal and vassalized them in 1460. Ming broke it 100 years later.

I feel like in my case it was triggered by me allying Vijayanagar. speculation tho

It means he will again accept tributary once you integrate all your vassals for some reason...

This break doesn't happen immediately. I had my vassals for 15+ years, for example.

@atwix @derfan can you all confirm that at the time you had Ming break tributary, you had at least one vassal?
