I think in HOI it was also planed at the start of the series but was never implemented

To spread them in 3D? Magnetic mines which react to a ships Hull. Self replicating mines. Self approaching mines.
But the purpose of these mines is damaging ships.

In space? THE space? Where no man has gone before space? You know how big space is? You would need "quite some" mines to evenn cover tiny, tiny, TINY places

And magnetic fields that could cover those distances would disclose a mine field over vast distances rendering it useless

It was said that space stations could funnel warp engine ships into certain spots and trap them. A mine field would make sense in that cotext.

Technically, it's feasible to just tie dozens of missiles into a pod and leave it drifting around a system next to the most likely approach routes and / or wormhole locations. Get in range, get shot.

Minefields? In the vastness of not-earth????
Why not ? We're almost making a minefield of debris around Earth - throw some extra explosives up there and you would make it very difficult for any vessel to approach (or leave) the planet.
