Hehe.

Land tech 17 and 18 give +0.25 morale each. Artillery fire rating is increased from 0.2 to 1.0 and a bunch of new cannons pop up. Also, Maurician infantry becomes available at 18.

The gap with level 16 is particularly huge.

As a whole, it seems the transition to gun play has been made more like an on/off switch. One day you're fighting one way, the next everything changes...

I know tactics and troop types evolved during the time period, but was it a dramatic, overnight type situation like the one that tech levels 16-18 will depict...?

No it wasn't overnight of course. There were plenty of battles where new tactics were tried out. I think you shouldn't read a new technology as 'overnight' but more like a slow changing in warfare after each battle. A new land technology is achieved when one strategy is 'perfected'. At least, this is how I interpreted it.

So land tech should be influenced by how man battles you have. For example the tech research can go slow but while battling you discover something new and suddenly it boosts. And you reach the next level faster. It will spread to other nations and vice-versa when you are not the discoverer. And then you get to name your own new type of units like Gustavian infantry becomes whatever your king's name is :D

yeah yeah there is a flaw in my thinking :) . I just use it to get a feel with the game in the flow of events. If you would prefer that things did go overnight, be my guest. Research is not optimized enough to show how things went in that time frame.

I'd actually like it to be a little more progressive, a little slower. That shiny new cannon takes a little getting used to, and some time in battle to make it work right.

Guess I'll see how it goes during the first few runs and go from there... ;)

well often i don't use the cannons at level 18 , they are kinda expensive toys
and i'm not gonna change at level 18 , or i didn't remember changing at that level :eek:

That reminds me. Is there any point to taking the pedrero? It's weaker in every regard than the other 2 cannons that pop up at Land 21.

The in-game description says it's a lightweight, cheap and fast cannon. Unfortunately none of those characteristics can be represented by unit stats, so it ends up as just a rather poor sort of cannon. Bit of a waste from a design perspective. From a gameplay perspective, well, just avoid it :p

I believe it all started with a couple of English lords who saw the effectiviness of gunpowder in a battle between Franks and Arabs in Spain. That was when they wanted to know more about the stuff and incorprated it in western armies.
Same goes for all the other developments. Hence the neighbour bonus! And in some times there were more advances in a couple of years then in others. Just like in modern times (WW2).
