Call me nuts but I'd rather have a reliable flying boat than a large flying boat. Catalina FTW. Served from the 30's all the way into the 80's in some roles including the search and rescue role.

yeah, reliable beats size usually all the time. But considering their size and everything, I think those things were quite reliable too, if not I guess they would have more losses. Although the captured US version was quite prone to be "on fire".
