So from what I thought watching the Hungary WWW, countries could not give you military Access unless they are in your faction for example France was at war with Hungary but could not go through Swiss because they weren't Allies. But now Im pretty sure I saw military Access requests from Britain in the last WWW, do we have a definitive up to date explanation for the military access rules and restrictions?

I would suggest checking dev diary before posting, but here it is for you:
"Military Access
Like in most paradox games, this lets you move troops in a nation's territory, but not attack from there. Airbase and naval base access requires factions and military access is not enough for this."

So this would only be useful if you had allied territory on the other side of the country you have military access from I assume?

Or if you're in a situation where, say, as the Poles you are loosing. So you decide to retreat. And you decide to get military access from Hungary and Yugoslavia ,or Romania, who have yet to join the war, and hope to link up with British or French naval assets that can transport you abroad to continue the war.

I remember invading Canada in Hoi 3 while USA was still not in the allies but providing Military access to the Canadians. They couldn't use US territory to go around and enter territory colored in glorious Japanese occupation colors, thus threatening my rear, but they could probably have done so if I left empty unoccupied pockets of Canada on the US border. This also made it very difficult for me to envelop them: Squeezing them against the border caused them to move across it and redeploy home, showing up at the front a few weeks later.

Apparently it will work the same in this game, which makes access very useful on the defense, or as you say to support an ally that you don't share a border with. If France has military access through Belgium it can preposition forces there, ready to rush into defensive lines along Dutch rivers when Germany invades and Netherlands joins the Allies. If you wait until having Belgium in your faction it may be too late to save the useful Dutch divisions, even if Belgium joins immediately and your troops can start moving at once they may be too far away unless you have access.

Ah so they can reoccupy territory taken by your troops but they cannot attack your troops from military access. Thanks

I think I'll have to rephrase myself: They cannot enter directly into territory controlled by you from land controlled by a third party who is not in the war. When I said they could enter pockets, I meant pockets that had no troops in them and also were not yet occupied: Thus they enter technically friendly territory and will be supplied from that territory when moving on from there.

But what about a scenario that's similar to Germany wanting access through Belgium to attack France in WWI. Why isn't it possible to use a minor country to create a larger front against your enemy in HoI4?

What if say, Germany was at war with Soviet Union and Soviet Union gets military access through Poland, and Germany being fascist declares war on Poland, so how would that work? The military access rules wouldn't matter and Poland would become a war zone between 3 Nations or would SU have to retreat to its own nation
