Part III: 1511-1520

January 1511

A new year dawns and the city of Milan is prospering. In the last twenty years, we have become a small power in Italy and Southern France. We even managed to gain lands from the dreaded French. So far, so good...

As a new year's gift, the king of Austria offered Wurtemberg to join the alliance he has with Baden en Thuringen.

April 1511

Villiers d'Isle Adam himself, the ruling visier of the Knighst of St-John, was received in court today. The noble knight wanted to negotiate peace, since his only ally, Genoa, has fallen under our attacks. Ludovico states clearly that he absolutely hasn't any intention of continuing war with the sacred Order. A white peace is signed with the Knights... Villiers returns home a happy man.

More diplomatic moves are done this month. One messenger is sent to the very North of Europe, to the country belonging to that other knight order, the Teutonic Knights, near the Baltic Sea. The noble knights agree with the royal marriage offered.

August 1511

The dreaded Turk once again goes at war against Christendom. In his unstoppable hunt for power, the Ottoman sultan has found a suitable prey in Moldavia. Bogdan III, the ruling monarch of Moldavia is not intending to give up his lands without fighting. He calls for his allies in Poland and Lithuania. the Polish armies have set march towards Moldavia.
We hope that the Moldovans can withstand the attacks of the Turkey-Algiers-Hedjaz-Morocco combo.

Yet another letter is received from the court of the tzar in Russia. Vasili tales of the fact that he has declared war upon the Golden Horde, the last stain of what was once the mighty empire of Genghis Khan and Attila the Hun. The nomads drag their allies in Astrakhan into the war, whilst Mother Russia calls for Denmark, Pskov, Ryazan and Crimea.

September 1511

Aha, Christianity has taken its first steps in suppressing the Moslem aggression. As Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand I, king of Austria and my noble friend, found it was his duty to defend the Balkan against the Turks. The brave man thus send a messenger to sultan Bayezid, bearing the declaration of war. It was later I got news from my informants in Istanbul on how the Turkish ruler executed the messenger to make an example... Europe was on the edge of the First Turkish War.

Meanwhile, the Austrian allies in Baden, Thuringen and Wurtemberg all confirmed to Ferdinand that they would aid him in his journey. Of course, Bayezid had already gathered his fellow Moslem friends around him.

Ooooh, if only Christendom could prevail.

November 1511

Yet another war braks out. The year 1511 A.D. would henceforth be known as the Year of Trouble.
And once again, the Turks are involved in the war.
The republic of Venice together with its allies of the Hanseatic League, Pommerania, Brandenburg and, of course, Portugal has declared war on Turkey. They probably felt they could gain some lands while the Turk was fighting two other wars at the same time. However, this time Turkey only got help from the Hedjaz and Morocco. Algiers felt that it just couldn't handle all those wars and decided not to aid the Ottomans.

January 1512

The city of Genoa has revolted. 43000 citizens and peasants have stormed the city hall and the local army encampment in the early morning of January 3rd. All magistrates and soldiers were at sleep. They had no chance. Half of the local regiment was slaughtered, whilst the other half was confined.
The mayor and his magistrates however suffered a more terrible faith. They were all hung on the city walls, to show that Genoa was not to be considered Milanese no more. Every travelling merchant could now see the magistrates hang there.
The news of this event fills me with rage. The insulence... They will pay for this, they will...
In the name of God and Milan, those rebels will be punished in the bloodiest way imaginable.
May God forgive us for our deeds.

A huge 21000 men strong army is trained in Milan. It consists of infantry as well as cavalry and cannons. The garrisons in Savoy and Nice are also prepared.

March 1512

The tzar has signed a peace agreement with the Golden Horde. The Horde has payed 36 ducats to Russian emperor to cease his attacks.

April 1512

The revolt in Genoa City is still raging. The rebels have locked themselves inside the city walls.
We initiated a blockade to the city, so it will run out of food supplies very soon. Reports from inside the city have reached me that the first victims of the lack of food have already fallen. A reasonable amount of people have already fallen sick, and diseases are spreading though the city. Haha, these insulent Genoesew will die by their own hands... Attrition takes its toll.

Halfway through the month, Julio pays me a visit once more... It isn't a pleasant one however. Apparently, the king of Portugal, Manuel I, together with his allies in Venice, Pommerania, Brandenburg and within the Merchant League of the Hansa, has declares war upon me thrusted ally Spain. The aging Ferdinand has called for me and our ally James IV Scotland. We oth decide to honor our alliance and help the Spanish king.
Immediately afterwards 3000 fresh recruits are trained in Nice & 6000 infantrists together with 20 cannons are built in Provence to stop any possible naval attack. In Milan itself 12000 men sign up for the army and 30 cannons are built.

August 1512

After a lot of preparations, our army moves into Genoa and initiates siege. The rebels, unskilled in military tactics and defense, are quickly beaten. After a swift assault the city is ours again. As promised our wrath was terrible. The leaders of the different guilds, leaders of the uprising, are all racked and then beheaded. Some other citizens, mostly brave men and/or informants of the rebels are hung on the square in front of the city hall.
The revolt is thus suppressed just in time. Now we can turn towards Venice, Portugal and the others.
A small detachment of the army is left in Genoa, the other part is sent back to Milan to strenghten our invasion army there. Venice is about to be attacked.

October 1512

Our armies have invade the province of Mantua and have lain siege upon the city. Reports reach my colonels that more support armies, sent by Spain mostly, are on their way. In November new Spanish troops, under the able command of el Gràn Capitàn arrive in Mantua and set up camp to aid us in the siege.

January 1512

A New Year dawns and Mantua is still under heave siege from the combined Milan-Spain armies.
The city is close to falling. Another two months normally, and the city should give in to our attacks.

May 1512

Well, the siege lasted a little bit longer then expected ut at last Mantua falls. It is Spain however that claims the city as theirs, basing theirselves upon the higher rank their commander has. Well, I am not going to fight that decision. Other plans dawn... Venice itself, trading capital of Europe, is the next target... The Dogue will pay for his stupidity.

Meanwhile, our monarch Ludovico has decided to set up a trade embargo with all other European nations. The embargo should finish within 33 months. We can however use this opportunity to gain a monopoly in our CoT of Genoa.

Sad news reaches me later that month. The armies of Moldavia were beaten on the battlefield by the Turkish hordes and their capital of Chisinau has fallen to the Moslem guns. Moldavia, is henceforth being knowing as Turkish territory. The rising of Islam continues.

June 1512

Massimiliano Sforza has reached Venice with the remainder of our troops, 7000 men strong. The proud city is under siege.
The city walls are strong however and have shown no sign of crackling this far.

October 1512

Another war breaks out. Moslems are fighting eachother as Persia declares war upon Turkey and its allies of the Hedjaz and Morocco. As mentioned before, as long as they are slaughtering eachother, I don't mind in the least.

Then a quiet time passes...Only to be ended brutally in September 1513

September 1513

A messenger comes reeling into my office with a letter, bearing the sign of the Venetian dogue.
Why would the man write me a letter? I am one of his archenemies...

To Massimo Penen, advisor of Ludovico the Moor

Dear Mister. With regret we saw your country expand and stand up against the French suppression. We don't have a single problem with that. But, the Venetian Republic feels worried that your aggression will ultimately lead to our destruction and that we can not allow. We can not allow Milan to threaten our borders by fortifying your fortresses there and steging huge armies in the region.
I, Leonardo Loredano, Dogue of the Republic of Venice, in the name of my people, declare war upon Milan and its citizens.
That the best may win, milord.

Signed,
Leonardo Loredano

What? AAAH DAMMIT! Imputent lout!
The insulence... I am filled with rage and immediately want to send our armies to Venice, but when I calm down I realize that Venice is a big threat. It is a strong seaborn nation and has numerous islands scattered in the Mediterranean. These islands are, for the moment, almost impossible to take for us, due to a lack of navy.

I command the trainig of more recruits in Milan and call back troops from our French possessions to fortify Milan. We are not ready for this war... Yet!

In the comming months troops are trained in Milan, Genoa, Marseille, Nice and on Corsica. We want to able to counter any amphibious attack that may occur.

January 1514

Our armies are still strenghtening and troops are being gathered from everywhere. The departure will be due next month...
Meanwhile... The Polish king has signed peace with the Turkish sultan. I am pleased to hear that the noble Christian king Jagiello was able to push the Moslem threat back. Poland adds Moldavia to its possessions.
Good,... I hope that the reconquista in the Balkan has begun.

February 1514

The big departure is there... after half a year of preparing and recruiting our army is ready. I command Sforza to Mantua with the bulk of our army. A small detachment is left in Milan to defend the city against possible attacks.
I hope that we are able to show Venice its place in United Italy... BEHIND Milan that is.

March 1514

Out troops have arrived and have lain siege on Mantua. The city's fortifications don't seem all that strong after my generals in the area. They highly suspect the city will be in our hands in autumn. I entirely hope they are correct.

September 1514

AHA! Victory... My commanders were right. After one blitz assault Mantua gave in... The Milanese flag now flies high on the city walls. Next target... Venice itself! The Milanese armies set march towards Venice.

October 1514

Our army has arrived in the surroundings of Venice and beaten a Venetian army on the field. Our cannons are being positioned around the city and siege is initiated. The Venetian fort however is a lot stronger than the previous one in Mantua. This siege just could turn out to be a long one.

November 1514

Blasted! A Venetian army has launched an amphibious attack on Mantua and has initiated siege. Apparently the city won't hold long. 35000 Venetian have set up camp outside the province's capital.

February 1515

Venice has retaken Mantua and have set march to Venice to kick out our forces. The two armies clash outside the metropole... The fighting is harsh. The Milanese army fights fiercely. Heroic deeds are done, and many a man dies for his mother nation. Despite all efforts and braveness, the Legion of Rightiousness, defenders of Milan, has to flee from the battlefield, strongly outnumbered. The Venetian army doesn't show any sign of pursuing our army.

Marhc 1515

The remains of our army gathers outside Mantua and once again starts a siege on the city. We are getting exhausted. Yet, the reserve armies in Milan hold their ground.

April 1515

It is a sunny morning when I get out of bed on the 1st. A beautiful day!
My mood is superb. I greet my two sons on my way to the badroom and give my wife a warm morning kiss. Life can be so good!
Although we are still at war with Venice, the situation seems to cool down. Mantua is under siege and Venice is busy fighting our Spanish allies elsewhere. Spain is attacking Illyria in great numbers. I have also heard from a Spanish invasion force, under the command of Colonna, a most able general, preparing an assault on Venice itself in the plains outside the city.

My office looks nice as ever. When I look at it, it is designed with a sense for taste. The flour is made out of real marble of Carrara. I despise the amounts of gold and silver other courts spend on their palaces. The sight of the French court makes me disgusted.
In the middle of the office stands my desk. A nice piece of furniture made out of good oak from the north. Numerous figures are cut in the wood, but all very tasteful, not too much.
Then I noticed the letter in the middle of my desk. The envelope is decorated with lily's... Sign of the French royal family. I am filled with a sudden fear when I open the envelope...

The Second French War

The next thing I know is that I stand in the king's throne chamber, dictating him the letter.
The letter states clearly that the new French king, François I, in order to gain the thrust from his people, has declared war upon the infidels of Milan. We are once again at war with the dreaded French...
This declarance of war is highly unexpected and we are not prepared in the least.
However... We are not planning on being eaten by France, no, we will try to take some possessions of theirs as quickly as possible and then sign peace.
The reserve army in Milan, originally prepared for the war with Venice is sent reeling to Grenoble to defend against the possible French attack.
Messengers are send to Madrid, Naples and Edinburgh. Spain, Naples and Scotland all join in the war.
The old Ferdinand even sends me a letter he is eager to show the French their rightful place in Europe.
We are now facing a combined force consisting of France, the Papal States, Helvetia, Lorraine and Modena. This war could well steer our future. We will have to survive this war to claim our place in Europe.

After the departure of the reserve army, 10000 more recruits are signed up and 40 cannons are built.
Reports have already reached me that an army from Modena has set off to our capital. The army appears to be some 12000 men strong, all infantry however.

May 1515

The agressors from the south have reached our city walls and have commenced a siege. The city walls however seem able to withstand the siege for a long time, long enough to call armies back from the rest of our possessions to liberate the city. Two messengers are sent in different directions. One leaves for our Sforza's army in Mantua, the other drives off in the direction of Genoa, to call for the help of our garrison there.
A few days later, both messenger are back in court, they each have the same news. The local commanders will come to aid us asap, when their armies are ready.

June 1515

In the east, the Turkish sultan Selim signs peace with the Persian ruler Ismael, after having endured some huge losses by Persian hands. Persia appears victorious and grabs the roch province of Trabzon from the Turks. Same remark: Moslem wars... I don't mind a single bit.

The siege on Milan continues but the city walls haven't shown any sign of giving in yet... The countryside surrounding the city have well felt the effects of war. A lot of farms have been raided for food, farmers were slaughterd, women and children raped... It is time that we strike back...

January 1516

Tragedic news reaches me from Mantua. The old Sforza has passed away cuz of age... The body is to be returned to Milan for a state funeral. His son however, the brave Fabrizzio Sforza has taken over command of his fathers troops. The youngster has been a help of his father already for five years and has commanded many attacks this far. The man excels at tactics and keeping up moral. Later that month, the first report from Fabrizzio is also received. Our armies have retaken Mantua from Venice and are already on their way back to Milan. Apparently, the Genoese regiment are also on their way.

March 1516

The Legion and the Genoese regiment clash with the Modena Army outside Milan. The battle is decided quickly... The tactician Sforza sent our small cavalry round to attack the Modenese artillery from the side. Meanwhile, the bulk of our forces clashed with the outnumbered Modenese in the middle. Our artillery detechments provided cover fire. The Modenese general and a handful of his mates were able to flee back to their home province. Fabrizzio Sforza immediately starts the pursuit, taking the Genoese regiment with him.

In France itself, Spain is rampaging through Lorraine and Helvetia at the moment.

May 1516

Sforza has well reached Modena by now and has lain siege on the city. Meanwhile the king of Lorraine Antoine has paid the new Spanish king Carlos 250 ducats to end the war. The noble Spanish king Ferdinand I has passed out last winter and was succeeded by his son.

July 1516

For the first time in a long, I receive word from Father Benedict again. The monk reports that Vasili, tzar of all Russians, has annexed his vassals in Ryazan lately, expanding his influence on the Russian plains further.

September 1516

The fresh recruits in Milan are sent to Provence to defende the port of Marseille against possible naval attacks... Meanwhile, France seems to be busy fighting off Spain in the North and in the surroundings of Dijon (Franch Comté).

March 1517

The time of revenge is nigh!... Our armies gathered in Marseille are sent to Languedoc to defeat the French there. However, one day after their departure from Marseille, I am forced to send a messenger to call them back to Milan. They arrive in Milan a few weeks later, just in time to defend the city against forces sent by the Pope. The Papal forces are beaten outside Milan and pursued.

April 1517

Carlos, king of Spain, has signed a peace treaty with the Dogue in Venice. After some fierce battles in the Adriatic, Spain gains control over the province of Istria.
I immediately send a messenger to Venice also, to negotiate peace with the Dogue. Two weeks later, he is back in court, bearing with him the declaration of the white peace.

May 1517

I have worked well for the cause of Milan untill now, and to repay me for my work, our king Ludovico has decided to promote me again. I am now to be adressed as Marquis Massimiliano Penen... HAHA

August 1517

Spain is doing well in this war this far. The untakeble province of Helvetia has fallen to the SPanish attacks, and the Helvetian republic was annexed by the Spanish crown. Good for them... I send my congrats to Madrid

November 1517

The Milanese army once again fights a battle with the Papal armies, once again, we are victorious. Apparently, God turns our side when it really comes to it. The victorious armies are sent further into Papal territory and set off for Rome itself, capital of Christianity and capital of the ancient Roman Empire. Ohhh, if only we could add that pearl to our crown.

January 1518

After long siege, Fabrizzio Sforza sends me a letter that the city of Modena has given in to our attacks and that our armies have already marched into the city. I immediately ride my horse to Modena to negotiate peace with the defeated Alfonso, king of Modena. The king agrees to cede his possessions to our rule. The Milanese territory is further expanded and Modena is added to our possessions.
Immediately afterwards, the fortress in Modena is expanded.

More troops are trained in our French possessions since we still have to face France for the very first time this war.
Meanwhile we have signed a white peace with Lorraine.

On the 10th, I get news that Rome has come under siege of our army. The army of Sforza is commanded to France for future use. The walls of Rome seem to be weak. After two weeks already, a lot of holes have appeared in the city's defenses.

February 1518

February 25, a glorious day. Rome falls into the hands of the Milanese army. The colonel commanding our army, Gaspaccio, immediately signs a peace treaty with His Holiness. The Pope declares that his lands are to be considered Milanese and that he from now will never claim any wordly possessions no more.
Immediately afterwards, I command the people of Rome to expand the fortress of the city. Rome is a city we will hold on to. A city showing the power of Milan. Rome is back where it belongs... Under firm Christian rule, not corrupted by the Pope's influence.

http://www.geocities.com/eu_aar/Milan/annexedpope.htm

On the same day, Julio is there again to hand me a letter. The letter bears bad news however. Despite the force of the Spanish armies, Spain can't fight two big wars simultaneously. Busy defending their borders against France, they let Portugal sneak in unnoticed. The Portuguese took Andalusia, Sierra Nevada, Leon, Gibraltar and Madrid itself, without much resistance. Carlos I is forced to cede Andalusia, Sierra Nevada and Leon to Portugal.
This is an uppercut for Spain. THey just lost their biggest shipyard and suffered the insult of losing their capital to foreigners.

March 1518

Tragedy! Spain and France have concluded peace...
France has struck back fiercely and regained control over their previously lost provinces of Bourgogne and Lyonnais. That leaves us isolated once again!
we will try our best. It seems however, that the French treasury is depleted and that they are short on troops.

June 1518

A small French detachment of 5000 infantrists has attacked Grenoble. The poor soldiers were all shot down by our garrison, high up in the city. The bodies of the French now feed the crows in the fields outside the city.

August 1518

The second attempt of retaliation is there. Our armies gathered in Provence, Dauphiné and Nice all set off for Languedoc. Our scouts have reported that the fortress of Montpellier, isn't all that strong and we should be able to break through it fairly easy.
Also, a legal counsil is promoted in Genoa to make sure the population doesn't revolt.

October 1518

A letter from Massimo di Carnivale in Venice again. Aha, I am eager to now what the kind men has to tell me now. Apparently, the Dogue has lost the battle against Islam and has ceded the Cyclades to the Turkish agression. When is this Turkish agression going to stop dammit!

14000 fresh recruits are trained in Milan itself to aid to our conquest in France.

December 1518

As expected, the Turks just can't stop warring. Selim has sent a declaration of war to the noble Knights of St.John, based on Rhodes. The Knights demand for the support of their Greek allies. The Turk however drags in the Hedjaz, Wallachia and Nubia.
I send my support to the Knights, but expect that they will perish soon enough.

March 1519

Meanwhile, our armies in Savoie and Milan have been expanding nicely and now is the time to strike France again. I send 22000 recruits and 50 cannons of to Lyon, a rich city which France will defend fiercely. If we could take that province, I am sure the French king would be reasonable when it comes to negotiations. I am determined not to lose.

May 1519

The war in the Balkan turns into a Turkish victory all the way. After just 5 months of war, Greece has to cease its attacks and is annexed by the Turks. The Turkish empire gets bigger still.

I swear to God that Milan will one day be powerful enough to stand up against the Turks. We will one day!

June 1519

The fortresses of Montpellier have given in to our siege and Languedoc falls into our hands. Meanwhile, Lyon is also giving in to our siege.
A French messenger arrives in Milan later that month, taling that François offers us Languedoc in exchange of peace. I greedily jump at the proposal...
Milan is tired, out of money and in need of peace. I am happy that we have survived these troublesome times.
Our territory has expanded nicely during this war. We have taken a total of 3 provinces: Modena, Roma and Languedoc. All reasonable rich provinces, with a nice population.
It is time to calm down now and to cure our wounds.

September 1519

Europe cools down and it is time to go diplomatic again. The German nations of Saxony, Bohemia & Hannover sign a military alliance, forging a German alliance of reasonable strenght.

November 1519

One more alliance is forged. The Russian tzar offers the Knights of St John a helping hand and takes them under his wings and into his alliance. Meanwhile, the Hanseatic League expands its influcne and makes Pommerania a vassal. Last, we conclude a royal marriage with the Balkan state of Serbia.

December 1519

I am promoted to Duke! Wooopeeee! :)

January 1520

Tragedy strikes our nation again. Our noble king Ludovico has passed away this morning, taking his bath. The old man died without a heir, and since I am not qualified to take over regency, the Milan City Counsil is appointed ruler of our thriving nation. The Republic of Milan is born!
The first real European democracy is established.

The first decision of the Counsil is the appointment of a legal counsil in Modena

March 1520

The German Alliance of Saxony expands further, taking the strong nation of Hessen in.

August 1520

Further reorganising of our empire this month. A counsil is appointed in Montpellier - Languedoc
Also, the City Counsil funds the expanding of our fortress in Milan, taking the fortress to a nice lvl 3.

October 1520

Yes, further reorganising.... Legal Counsil in Rome.

Part IV: Milan, a nation on the grow

January 1521

Yes yes yes... here I am again dear diary... It has been a while, but I have been busy doing some tests for the Milano City Counsil. They wanted to test me if I still mastered mathematics, French, English, Latin and the arts of Religion... Paaah... passed all tests
(OCC: Errr, I have been busy with exams)

So another alliance is formed on New Year's day. Apparently the old ruler of Sibir, Aguis Khan, a direct decendant of the once so feared Genghis Khan, and Muhammed Shaibani, king of the Uzbeks, signed a military alliance on a New Year's reception in Istanbul... Twas a gattering of Moslems of all over the world.

May 1521

I get news from my Austrian friends. It is a letter from the noble king Karel V himself. The Knight of the Golden Fleece declares me that the infidels in Bavaria have launched an attack on his country. The man however also says that we musn't worry, since his nation is backed up by the likes of Wurtemberg, Baden, Thuringen and the Palatinat.
I grin a bit... Why is it that small nations always try to throw off the yoke of the gigantic nations ruling them... Ohh, right... That's what we did. Ok then

July 1521

It has been a while since we heard anything from France. However, the 3rd of July blesses me with information on France. The detoriating French alliance, consisting of just France and Lorraine the past few months, is once again expanded. The recently broken free vassals of Denmark, Sweden seeked refuge with the French crown to aid them against the possible attacks of the Danes.

August 1521

Oohh, most sacred month. The growing power of Milan is confirmed when we offer vassalage to the Scottish king James V, and the man accepts... Haha, Milan is now an established power with a vassal of meaning, not like the pittiful Genoese in the past. I also send a messenger to Moscow to offer the tzar a royal marriage. Vasili happily offers one of his daughters to a member of the Counsil.

September-October-December 1521

Quite boring months, my beloved diary... Only events worth mentioning are the numerous alliance forged in these months. The first one, in September, consists of Poland-Lithuania and the Netherlands.
I am most pleased to hear of this alliance, especially since it blocks the French out of an alliance with Poland. Their relationships seemed a little too good lately.
The second, in October, a minor alliance and of no interest to us currently, in Germany Kleves and Cologne, two small states to the North of France decide to work together. So do the Teutonic Order when they get into an alliance with England in December.

January 1522

The preachings of the heathen Martin Luther are spreading rappidly through the Holy Roman Empire.
Both cities and villages in the countryside convert to his belief. The disgusting protestantism florishes. In a try to establish his country once again, the king of Wurtemberg, Ulrich I, decides to convert to that belief as well. Aaah, may the dog burn for this. Pittiful man, can't even suppress some small uprisings.
I guess I have to teach him the 'Rules of Rebel Suppression' sometime, rules created by the most intelligent ME, while suppressing Genoa. :)

May 1522

Hmmm... Let's see how the country fares. Milan has grown quite a lot, but one thing troubles me. Our second most biggest city, Rome, is isolated from the rest of our lands... In between lies the nation of Tuscany. A nation without allies, consisting of only two provinces, Luca and Florence. These would make nice addings to our gentel little empire, not in the least since Florence is a nice city.
So the declarance of war leaves for Tuscany. I do not call for our allies, we are confident of our army's capabilities.

The day after the declarance of war was sent , our armies are already on their way to Tuscanian territory. Our beloved general Sforza III has set march to Pisa, the capital of Luca... Under his command: 15000 men infantry. The other army, under the command of colonel Fibonacci is on its way to the Tuscanian capital Florence and consists of roughly 15000 infantry backed up by 40 cannons.

August 1522

News reaches me from the Portuguese court in Lissabon. The citizens of the newly conquered Portuguese province Granada has declared its independance again. Portugal immediately sends half of its active army to bring the Moslem population once again under their just rule.

September 1522

After a few months of war, the agression of Bavaria seems to have cooled down. Reports reach me that Bavaria has signed peace with all its enemies, all under different conditions:

  • * Thuringen: White Peace
    * Baden: gets 130 ducats and Ansbach from Bavaria
    * Austria: gets 250 ducats
    * Wurtemberg: annexed completely by Bavaria
    * Palatinat: receives the remainder of the Bavarian treasury, a wopping 18 ducats

October 1522

The sieges in Luca and Florence are not going as planned... The small garrisons of both cities were easily driven out of the city and it seems they have both fled to neighbouring provinces. The lack of cannons and manpower slows down both sieges, especially the one on Pisa.
I immediately commision the recruitment of 14000 fresh recruits out of our capital provinces, and 30 cannons are also built.

January 1523

France is strenghtening her alliance further, however, only small nations seem to join the alliance. This month, Holstein decides to back up France in the future.

Halfway through the month, I get a letter from the old Father Benedict. Aha, what does he have for me now? Ooh, more alliance news, disappointing, but anyway. After a lot of buttkissing, Brandenburg has joined the alliance with Poland and Holland.

February 1523

The Russian tzar is also further expanding, on the diplomatic front that is. The small nation of Pskov, has agreed to the vassalage offered.

June 1523

After just over a year of war, Pisa has surrendered and the Milanese flag flies on the city walls. Festivities are however forbidden by me and I command the noble Sforza to guide his troops to Florence to aid the ongoing siege there. The man immediately sets off and leaves a small detachment of 1000 men in the city. On the 30th of this month, he is already in Florence and immediately takes over command of the siege. Florence however is showing signs of breaking. The city's food supplies are blocked for over a year now and the fields surrounding the city burned. This lack of food would ultimately lead to their destruction.

September 1523

Rumble on the Steppes! Vasili, the powergreedy tzar of Russia declares war on the remainder of the great Mongol Horde, the Golden Horde. The lands of the Horde are rich in gold and the tzar has found these provinces most suitable to finance his wars versus Poland. All I know of this Horde is that their are very skilled horseriders and they could be a pain in Russia's ass.

October 1523

A letter bearing the Sforza family sign is delivered in court today. The noble general states that Florence is almost down for the count and that the city should fall within a month. I hope so... But the Sforza family has never let me down, so I have full confidence in his thoughts.

November 1523

The man was right... Florence falls on the 2nd of this month, even faster than expected. This leaves Tuscany in our hands, and the general himself is commanded to complete the annexation of the Tuscanian lands. On the 3rd, Tuscany exists no more...
Milan grows mightier yet!

http://www.geocities.com/eu_aar/Milan/annexedtuscany.htm

January 1524

I get news from the Russian plains. Tzar Vasili has concluded peace with the nomads of the Golden Horde. The brave horseriders of the Horde were soundly beaten on the battlefield by some huge infantry armies. After their defeat, the Horde leaders have ceded the province of Vorones and 250 ducats to Russia

May 1524

More news... This time from the Iberian Peninsula. It seems that Portugal has gained control over the situation in Granada again and has once again annexed the infidel Mores.

July 1524

I get news from Austria again... My friend Karl V informs me that he succeeded to add the infidels in Bavaria to his alliance. Quite surprisingly after some wars, but anyway.

In a private meeting tell the Counsil that we desperately need to strenghten our borders with France. I highly suspect more French agression in the future. They will want their land back of course.
However, we can't allow that. 3000 infantrists are picked of the country around Grenoble and 7000 noble men are recruited in Torino, Savoy.

Our relationships in Europe are also improved. I arrange royalmarriages with Hessen, Thuringen and Saxony.

August 1524

After our recent conquests, revolts were to be expected and in this month, the province of Luca revolts.
The citizens of Pisa are low on morale however and are quickly driven back to their homes.

May 1525

Another revolt... The wine-producing region of Languedoc has risen against the almighty Counsil. The garrison in Montpellier is strong enough but after a short meeting, the Counsil agrees in sending another 5000 men to Languedoc to strenghten the garrison.

July 1525

The threat of France is always nigh and therefor more soldiers are recruited. The garrison in Grenoble is given the order to recruit 3000 cavalry and 20 cannons in its province of Dauphiné.

August 1525

And yes, another revolt...
The peasantry in Corsica revolts... After a few sturdy guerilla fights in the mountanious province, the rebels are surrounded and wiped out. This is how we deal with infidels.

The major event this month is the letter that reaches me from my informants in Istanbul. The letter informs of the fact that the Turkish sultan Süleyman I, a most capable, smart and brilliant leader and tactician after my informants, has declared a state of war and that the people of Persia are his victims.
The sultan demands for support from Wallachia, Nubia and the Hedjaz and they all honour their alliance.

January 1526

More and more nations give in to the dispicable preachings of Martin Luther, that German monk.
Hessen has just converted to the new faith. We don't even consider converting to that heathen belief.

March 1526

The Persian ruler Thampasp has invited the nation of Georgia to his alliance and the Georgians have accepted...

June 1526

I send a messenger to the English court of His Majesty Henry VIII. The messenger carries with him a proposal for a royal marriage. The king happily accepts and the handsome daughter of Counselor Matteo Grazzi, Francesca, is wed to the king a month later... The delay was of course because of the divorce procedure between the king and his ex-wife.

January 1527

Holstein, Thuringen and the Palatinat have just converted to protestantism... Ugh, if only we could defend Christianity now.

The best news however are the 3 colonists that have reported in court today. The brave men and their families are eager to set of for the new world. So asked, so done.
They are sent to Chesapeake, Martinique and Puerto Rico, areas rich in sugar and tobacco.

February 1527

Another war breaks out on the Moslem peninsula. Oman and its allies Algiers and the Hafsids has declared war upon the small nation of Aden.

July 1527

A revolt breaks out in Modena, but is very quickly suppressed.
To make sure the peasantry calms down a little, I order the appointment of a legal counsil on Corsica. They are to closely monitor the behaviour of the locals.

I also get news from my colonist that was sent to Chesapeake... He is sorry to report that he failed to establish a trading post there, because of the hostile natives. Half of his crew was slaughtered and he says he will return home ASAP. I however don't forget Chesapeake... We will return there to claim those nice fields of tobacco when the time is ripe.

August 1527

Rejoice... Our colonies in Puerto Rico and Martinique are both firmly established! Let the money come this way.

Also, the two protestant German states Hessen and the Palatinat forge an alliance between them.
We in the meantime conclude royal marriages with the Hanseatic League and Baden.

September 1527

After a wise debate, the Counsil has agreed in promoting me again. I am now to be called regent !
How a lawyer can fare...
To celebrate this I send a messenger to Poland to conclude a royal marriage with Zygmunt Stary, the noble Christian king of Poland.

December 1527

The first victims of the Persia <--> Turkey war fall... the Hedjaz, after being beaten soundly by Persia a few times, beg for the white peace, and the Persians accept, busy as they are with the Turks in the north.

April 1528

Florence revolts... Ohhh, these revolts make me so tired...

May 1528

Corsica revolts... The counsil in Bastia has however quickly calmed the crowd down and the revolt was suppressed with minimal loss of life. 4000 fresh horsemen are recruited afterwards from the Corsican nobles.

June 1528

A new letter from Istanbul arrives in court. Apparently the Turks have signed peace with Persia. It is Persia however that is beaten. turkey takes Kirkuk, Kars and Nuyssaybin. The Turkish stain is still growing.

August - September - October 1528

These month are used to strenghten our arlies throughout the land. 4000 infantry is recruited in Genoa, 4000 in Luca, 6000 in Florence and another 6000 in Rome.

November 1528

Heeeeey, a letter from Father Benedict! It tales of how the Russian tzar is moving his armies towards Georgia and Persia, to support his allies in Crimea who have declared war upon the Georgians.

January 1529

Sweden and the Hanseatic League have just converted to protestantism.. .Has the whole Holy Roman Empire gone mad??? Where is the Holy now?

March 1529

The Counsil has agreed to initiate a trade embargo with all other nations for the period of 33 months. No matter how hard I object, they stick with their decision. Ah, well, we will use it establish our presence in Genoa more firmly then.

April 1529

Vasili has succeeded in adding Pskov to his alliance with Crimea.

June 1529

More alliances are formed this month. Denmark joins the alliance with Russia, Pskov and Crimea. And later that month, the princes of Pommerania agree in joining the alliance with Venice and Portugal.

July 1529

After a long war, full of attrition, Oman and Aden sign a white peace, exhausted... Fighting wars in the desert can be truelly terrifying.

August 1529

The garrison on Corsica is strenghtened with 20 cannons build by the locals.

September 1529

Alliance mania this month. All that is done this month comes to making and expanding alliances.
Saxony and Hannover start one by example. And a few days later, Bohemia joins the alliance with Austria, Baden and Bavaria. The Knights join the Russian alliance and France joins the alliance with Poland-Lithuania, the Netherlands and Brandenburg.

December 1529

The dreaded Turks have once again declared war upon their enemies in Venice. The Dogue has called for Portugal and Pommerania, while Turkey gets the Hedjaz, Wallachia and Nubia in the war.

January 1530

The Counsil has ordered the formation of an army capable of defending our capital whenever necessary and therefor 10000 infantrists, 6000 horsemen and 50 cannons are recruited and built in Milan. The total cost of this: 543 ducats!

Meanwhile, the Turks are still fighting ... And to their west, the Hafsids have seen a chance to grab some land. They declare war upon Turkey on the 21th. The Hafsid Empire is backed up by Oman and Algiers, while Turkey drags in its usual allies.

February 1530

We need to expand our alliance. Right now, it is rather small and we need more nations that can hit France. Therefor, the Counsil has sent a messenger to Lorraine. The king of Lorraine happily accepts. Hah, we can now hit France from four direction: From our possession, from Spain itself, from the Spanish lowlands and from Lorraine.

In the north, the Hanseatic League and Holstein forge an alliance.

March-April-May 1530

A revolt breaks out in Luca and 2000 infantry is recruited in Corsica.

December 1530

4000 infantrey is trained in Luca

March 1531

Corsica revolts... Aaah, why don't they stop pestering me.
Also, Crimea and Georgia sign peace. The Georgians have paid 39 ducats to the Khanate.

Great work. Good use of humour in the storyline.

Part V: France awakens once more: 1531 - 1541

(OOC: I am going to speed up some till I get to the more interesting passages)

March 1531:

The peasantry in Corsica revolts once more but is crushed once again. Meanwhile; the Christian kingdom of Georgia has signed a peace treaty with the Crimean Khanate, ceding the Moslems 39 ducats.

January 1532

Lutheranism is still spreading, and the heathen is converting villages, cities and countries all over Europe. I feel that in the future, the heathens will pay eventually. The Holy Catholic Church will always prevail in the end. This month, the Netherlands have converted to the heathen belief.
The English crown in the North has meanwhile joined the alliance of Portugal, which further consists of Pommerania and Venice. The so-called 'Alliance of Traders' welcomes a new, strong, member. In the Far East, the distant empire of China forges an alliance with the even more unknown Dai Viet. In India, the Mughal Empire makes an alliance with Hyderabad.

November 1532

More alliances are forged. The dreaded French king, François I, forges a strong European alliance with the king of Poland. And in their conquest of standing up against the Spanish yoke, the Netherlands invite the city state Cologne in an alliance.

December 1532

More and more reports reach me from the countryside... the peasantry in our growing empire seems to be quite unhappy with the wars lately. They are poor and are hungry. The risk of revolts has risen dramatically cuz of this
(Revolt risk +5 for 12 months)
However, we succeed in sueing the crowd when we declare that our noble nation has finally succeeded in forging a strong Christian alliance. Austria, defender of the True Faith, joins our alliance. The Greater Christian Alliance has been forged. Meanwhile, France drags Bohemia into its alliance.

February 1533

We further strenghten our military. In Milan, we commission 2000 horsemen while in Languedoc 5000 infantrists and 3000 horsemen are added to our local army.

March 1533

The Russian tzar is eliminating the gathering of small states in his surroundings. This month, Vasili has succeeded in diplo-annexing Pskov. I send the noble Christian son my regards on his newest accomplishment.

June 1533

The smites in Languedoc are ordered the building of 40 cannons to give our garrison a bigger siege capability. Meanwhile, a letter from the beautiful city of Florence informs me about the revolt that has broken out there. Baden and Bavaria, two of the smaller German states to our North forge an alliance.

July 1533

After the bloody suppression of the revolt in Florence, the Counsil demands the immediate recruitment of 7000 new soldiers in the region. So is done.

September 1533

The friend of Milan, king Carlos I of Spain has sent the Counsil a letter, informing them that his country has gone at war against the rich Aztecs in Middle-America. I wish him best luck. Although I am quite confident that he will succeed. I send a letter back to Carlos asking him for some maps of his. The maps land on the Counsils table two weeks later. The same is done with Portugal. This gives us a nice view on the world. A pity that we aren't capable of colonizing this far.

November 1533

The infidel Languedoc revolts but is quickly put down.

December 1533

I receive a state letter from Russia, informing me that the old tzar Vasili has passed away. The Counsil sends its regards up north, together with a big bunch of flowers.

January 1534

The new Russian tzarina, Elena Glinski, has declared war upon the Golden Horde. The nomad Horde drags Astrakhan into the war. Russia sides with Crimea, Denmark and the Knights of St-John. The tzarina clearly wants to win the hearts of the crowd by showing them the Bear is not asleep.

We, meanwhile, are behaving peacefully. We agree royal marriages with Pommerania, Bavaria, Venice, Bohemia and even France. Let's hope this secures our back a bit.

September 1534

Up North, Kleves joins the alliance with the Palatinat and Hessen. This makes a strong German alliance.

October 1534

The Turkish sultan Suleyman I signs peace with the ruler of the Hafsid empire, Al Hassan. Al Hassan cedes the rich province of Tripolitania to the mighty Turk.

January 1535

10 January... A day of tragedy. The last member of the noble Sforza family, Fabrizio, passes away. A state funeral is organised for the noble man. His whole family will live in the hearh of all Milanese forever.

More royal marriages are organised. This time with Hannover, Cologne and Kleves. Brandenburg joins the alliance with Hannover and Saxony.

February 1535

Tzarina Elena has succeeded in bringing the Horde to reason and has annexed their lands totally.

April 1535

The Spanish war against the Aztec empire was a short one apparently. I receive word from Madrid that the Aztec ruler Cuhautemoc, a brave man, was killed in combat, and that his demoralized troops were either killed or taken in custody if they didn't flee the battlefield. A few days after the slaughter, the Spanish conquistador Córtez marched his troops in Tenochtitlan, the proud capital of the Aztecs, a city that according to legends was made out of gold. The Aztec Empire was no more.

Meanwhile, our peaceful nation concludes royal marriages with the courts of Brandenburg and Denmark.

October 1535

After the annexation of the Golden Horde, Russia was still fighting against the nation of Astrakhan. This fighting comes to an end on the 7th. Aq Köbek, the leader of the Astrakhan peopl, offered the tzarina 176 ducats and the control over the province of Volgograd. The tzarina accepted the offer, and the north is quiet once more.

I receive another letter from Spain. In his hunger for conquest and gold, the Spanish king Carlos, has declared war upon another tribe in South America, called the Inca Empire. This empire apparently is a lot bigger than the Aztec Empire and is more difficult to take, due to the amount of mountains in the area. We'll see how this war fares.

December 1535

December 20 in the year of Our Lord 1535. I am ill, caught a cold, and now I have severe fever. Winter has also caught up with the Northern parts of Italy. Snow is falling from the sky and temperature is low. In a whole, a truelly terrible few days. But my duties are still on me and I still have a responsability to take. I slump out of my room, covered in a fine-tailored blanket and wiggle to my office. I open the huge door, and go to the window. I open the curtains and a bit of light illuminates the room. When I am at last in my chair, I take my pen and start writing my weekly report to the Counsil. "Dear Counsil Members, I am pleased to report that everything in our small empire is well and that..."
It is then that a messenger storms in. "What know?I yell"I am already bad mooded so make it quick young man."
The youngster unfolds the letter and starts reading it for me:

"Dear Mr.Penen and all Counsil Members of the Milano City Counsil. It is with pain in the heart that I have to call for your help. The peaceful times in Europe have come to rude stop. Although the Milanese Republic and the kingdom of Spain both tried their best to live in peace with its enemies, the infidel French king, François, has declared war upon the Kingdom of Spain. I highly suspect the man to do it out of jalousy for our recent expanding in the Americas and the huge amounts of gold we got from it. France has the suppory of her allies in Bohemia and Poland-Lithuania.
So, it is in this time of need that I call for the support of the people of Milan. Our friends in Scotland, Lorraine and Austria have already promised me their support. I want you to do the same

My honored greetings
Carlos, King of all Spaniards

I send the messenger out of my office and stare at the floor for a few minutes. This was to be expected of course. This way, France can claim back what it had lost in the past.
I hurry back to my room and dress myself. I ask for a carriage and I srt off to the Counsil building in the centre of the city.
Two days later, armies of Milan are on their way to the French provinces Lyonnais and Cévennes.

January 1536

The heresy of Luther is still gaining followers. I get reports that the rulers of Hannover, Kleves and even England have changed their state religion to protestant. Milan will stand as a defender of Catholicism. More troops are send to France, to invade Guyenne.

February 1536

Guyenne is invaded this month. The province is pillaged and the capital has come under siege of our troops. Meanwhile, Lyon is surrounded by our troops and the proud city is lain under siege. The mountainious Cévennes are also under attack.

June 1536

The sieges of Lyon, Guyenne and Cévennes are going as planned. Only Cévennes experiences a bit of slowdown, due to the difficult access possbilities of the province. Reserve troops are sent on their way to Cévennes.
On the 30th I get news that the city of Lyon is falling and that it shouldn't take our troops more than six months before the city falls. Most pleasant news that is. My old heart is filled with hope for an even bigger Milan.

August 1536

A letter is given to me with the news that the French crown has added the small state of Lorraine to its possessions. The power of France grows stronger but we shall continue to stand up against their yoke.

November 1536

As expected, Lyon hasn't held long. I get a report that Lyon has fallen. The citizens of the city have let our troops into the city and our generals dine in the city hall. I immediately carry the news to the Counsil. All members are very pleased. I also am happy that I can report that Guyenne is also giving in to our cannons.

December 1536

I realize that the Milanese possession haven't come under attack from France lately, although we are at war. The French seem to concentrate on their archenemy Spain. The Spanish provinces Roussilon and Helvetia are under siege. In Helvetia, France is backed up by a big detachment of Poles, 20000 men strong, under the command of the able general Tarnowski. The siege however is still under the command of the French commander Guise.

January 1537

Brandenburg turns protestant. Although we regret this but we can't be bothered now. We are still in heavy conflict with France.
A conflict that is slowly being won by us. Guyenne has fallen and our army is already on its way to Gascogne.

Halfway through the month, I get a letter from Spain. Carlos is displeased but again asks for the support of the people of Milan. The infidel Netherlands, backed up by their pittiful ally Cologne, has declared war upon Spain. Carlos gets the support of the Milano City Counsil, the Scottish crown, and naturally from his possessions in Austria.

February 1537

The recently converted state of Brandenburg joins an alliance consisting of the Hanseatic League and Holstein this month.
I am informed by my spies that Helvetia has fallen to France and that the French armies currently stand their ground in the province. They seem to be gaining breath for another attack. This war has to end quickly. Although we have grown hard both in terms of money , military and possessions, we still can't stand against France.

April 1537

The infidel protestants in Thuringen have joined an alliance with the Palatinat, Hessen and Kleves.
The ongoing sieges are still proceeding as planned. Our army in Lyon is send Béarn.
June 1537

Although we haven't got involved really, in the North, Spain is still fighting against the Netherlands and Cologne. As expected, Cologne wasn't up for a battle with the strong Spanish forces. The small city state is annexed by Spain this month. The brave Spanish general Bourbon is moving his troops up north to teach the Dutch a lesson.

July 1537

Rejoice people of Milan! The Milanese war machine has won another battle against the inevitable French. The siege in Cévennes has finally come to an end and the Milanese flag is present in the province. Hurray!

September 1537

Another summary from the Spanish court. Spain has signed a peace agreement with the exotic Inca tribe. The Spanish conquistadores gain 250 gold coins from the Incas and the command over Lima and Ayacucho.

November 1537

The Russian tzarina Elena is still thursting for blood. I am informed that her Royal Highness has declared war upon the kingdom of Sweden. Russia has the full support of Denmark and the Knights of Saint John in the conflict.

On the 24th, I once again get news from Spain, and once again it is bad news. Spain is already at war with both the French Alliance and the Netherlands, and this month that list is extended when Philipp I, king of Hessen, declares war upon Spain. Of course, we lend our full support to Spain and wish them best luck. Our other allies all honour the alliance.

Gascogne is meanwhile giving in to our siege.

March 1538

Another infidel nation smells Spanish blood. The dispicable state of Kleves declares war upon the Spaniards. Once again Spain is fully backed up by its allies.

May 1538

Hahaha! Take that damn frogs!
I am so pleased when I hear that Gascogne has also fallen to our siege. My old heart bumps up in down in my chest. Meanwhile Béarn is also falling.
Maybe it is time to negotiate peace with France and claim what is ours.
However, on May 29th, the Counsil just has a meeting, a French messenger storms into the chamber.
The letter he has for us bears the sign of the French king himself.
The contents of the letter are clear. France offers Milan the control over Guyenne, Lyon and Cévennes if we immediately stop our attacks on all French possessions. The Counsil negotiates and one hour later, the messenger is sent back to Paris, peace agreement with him. Two days later, Milan is considered commanders over all three provinces. All our armies are called back from duty and stationed in those provinces.
We also commission the appointment of legal counsils in all three provinces to keep the locals at bay.

June 1538
Spain is still fighting heavily against both France, the Netherlands and Hessen.

June 1538

So, Milan is at peace once more and we once more expanded our empire. Goodie! :)
Meanwhile, Spain is having a hard time. After having lost Helvetia to France, Spanish troops are once again besieging the mountainious province to take it back. In the North, the infidel people of Hessen are attacking Spanish Luxembourg.

July 1538

After our recent war, our military force needs rebuilding. 9000 infantrists are trained in the newly conquered province of Guyenne, while 3000 fresh recruits are added to our army in Cévennes. Also 50 cannons are commisioned in Lyon.

October 1538

I get news from the Spanish court. The armies of Hessen, under the command of their king, Philipp himself, appear to have taken Luxembourg from Spain. Their army is already on its way to Antwerp (Flandres). Meanwhile, Zeeland is also under Hessian siege.
Spain is losing even more in the North. Dutch armies have taken the Hague and have sent armies to Zeeland to co-operate in the siege of the province.
A few days after this report, I get another one, stating that also Cologne has fallen to the attacks of Hessen.
I pray to the Almighty that he will make Spain victorious.

On a personal note: I feel bad, an old man, sick and I feel life slipping away from me.

November 1538

I get news from the Trading Alliance. The distant empire of Mysore, in far away India, has joined the alliance of Venice, Portugal and Pommerania.
The Spanish Wars are still raging. French armies are besieging Franche Comté and Spain has retaken Helvetia. In the North, France has taken Artois from Spain.

I feel even worse and it is time to pass my duties to my successor. It is my oldest son, Luca that will take over my responsabilities starting December 1. The Counsil is informed and I can now retire and enjoy the last months of my life.

December 1538

Hi there! I greet you. Father has passed his duties on to me and it is I, Luca, that will govern the nation of Milan from now on, together with the noble members of the Counsil.

I am introduced to my new job with rather bad news. In the North of Europe, Spanish Zeeland has fallen to the troops of Hessen. I swear to God that they will pay for the insulence they have paid our nobel Christian ally. I guess I am just a little more agressive than my father...

January 1539

Protestantism spreads further. The Knights of the Teutonic Order have also converted to this 'True Faith'. Baah!

February 1539

Tragedy! Our Spanish ally isn't able to handle its wars, and Flandres has fallen to Hessen. Later that month I am informed of the peace treaty signed by Philipp and Carlos. The kingdom of Hessen receives 57 ducats of Spain, and the command over Zeeland and Flandres.

May 1539

Let's see. With whom is Spain still at war. Aha, they are still at war with France, Kleves and the Netherlands. I wish them bestest of luck.
Meanwhile, the beloved Austrians have signed peace with Bohemia, taking 250 ducats, Sudeten and Moravia.

June 1539

Ah good. Spain and the Netherlands have signed peace. The Netherlands have taken 250 ducats and The Hague from Spain.

September 1539

In order to suppress possbile revolts, 6000 horsemen are recruited out of the nobility in Rome. By keeping the nobility close to us, we hope to keep the crowd calm.

October 1539

Thuringen and the Palatinat sign an alliance.

January 1540

Saxony turns protestant also.

April 1540

A messenger from Kleves arrives, offering us a white peace. Not wanting to lose valuable resources in a pointless war, the Counsil accepts the proposal.
In Russia, tzarina Elena has signed peace with the people of Sweden. The Russian crown adds Karelia and Savolaks to its possessions.

June 1540

War is upon us again. I get news from both Istanbul and Madrid at the same time. My informants in the Turkish capital inform me that the Turkish Empire has declared war upon the Kingdom of Spain and that Turkey has the full support of its allies Wallachia, Nubia and the Hedjaz. The letter from king Carlos asks me for support in this war. We honour our alliance, while Austria does the same. Scotland has the guts to disshonour the alliance.

On the 14th, a deputy of the Milanese businessmen reports in court. The man informs the Counsil that the local businessmen have donated 400 ducats to the national treasury. We thank the man and send him home.
The money is immediately used. 11000 infantrists, 5000 cavalry and 50 cannons are either build or trained in our capital. Should the Turks invade, they will get a warm welcome.

July 1540

Naturally, the Turks will invade by sea. Therefore we commission the training of new recruits in our coastal provinces. 8000 infantry in Provence and 3000 infantry in Nice.
To our immediate north, Franche Comté has fallen to the French siege. However, Spain has succeeded in taking back Artois.

December 1540

As expected, Turkey has made a move... A small Turkish detachment of 4000 men strong had landed in Provence this months, but was soundly beaten by our Marseille Army. We suffered minimal casualties.
In the north of Europe, the Hanseatic League forges an alliance with Brandenburg.

January 1541

Revolts break out in Cévennes and Guyenne, but both uprisings are smacked down. Spain loses control of Cologne to rebels and a few days afterwards, Cologne declares its independance once again.

February 1541

Holstein and Sweden forge an alliance, hoping to stand up against Denmark in the near future. Newly independant Cologne joins the alliance of the Netherlands, Hessen and the Teutonic Order.

Meanwhile, Turkey has signed peace with the Dogue of Venice. Having lost quite a lot of battles, Turkey has to cede 250 ducats to the Venetian Republic.

On the 20th, a major revolt breaks out in Florence. 40000 brave men gather in the streets at dawn and set arch to the city hall. Our magistrates are killed and half the garrison wiped out. The other half succeeds in escaping to the neighbouring Rome. Oh they will pay. Immediately after we receive the news, severe preparations are startes in Rome... Rebels will pay eventually.

May 1541

After more then a month preparing, our Rome Army, 32000 men strong sets of for Florence. Upon arrival, a siege is started.
On the Russian steppes, Sibir and Astrakhan forge an alliance.

June 1541

6000 cavalry is trained in Rome

July 1541

Peace is signed between Poland and Austria. Poland takes over Moravia from Austria. Blast them!

September 1541

In order to further expand our naval capacities, transport ships are built in Marseille, Nice, Modena and Genoa.

November 1541

Once again, England goes at war with Scotland. Ethiopia and Persia sign a military alliance.

December 1541

War is upon us again! The Dogue of Venice, with the approval of all his senators, has sent a declarance of war to the Spanish court. Both Venetian allies, Portugal and Pommerania, honour their alliance.
I ensure Carlos that we will be there to help him out. Austria does likewise.

Immediately afterwards, our army stationed in Milan, under the command of colonel Buzzoni, is sent the Venetian Mantua...
