I'm playing as the USA and it's 1876, and my economy is coming along nicely. Capitalists are building lots of factories in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New England, which is exactly where i want them, since these are the most densely populated regions. However, so many factories are being built that I'm actually starting to run low on workers. California is a possible solution to this, since almost every province of california has a POP of at least 7,000 Craftsmen.

These POPs have been there a while now, and they haven't migrated to the East, and I want to know why. California has no factories, and there are no factories West of Texas, so it's not like there's much opportunity out there. Is there any reason the Craftsmen would not want to leave California?

If any of you have advice for how I could get all these workers to move to New York, Ohio, etc., I'd greatly appreciate it. Keep in mind, I DON'T want to build factories in California. I'd much rather have the workers come East. Is there any way I could do this?

Migration has been tweaked in ViP and other modifications. If you are uninterested in playing ViP, than I'm pretty sure there is a mod that tweaks the craftsmen/clerks without changing the game.

In Vanilla, it can be real frustrating in which Craftsmen and Clerks simply will not migrate, unless you starve them into submission.

I'm actually playing using VIP, and migration has worked fine everywhere else. I've been able to turn farmers or laborers in rural regions into craftsmen and they will quickly begin moving to an industrialized region like NY, Pennsylvania or Ohio. That's why I'm so confused by California, and how the Craftsmen won't move themselves out of the state.

Could the reason the craftsmen arent moving be due to the fact that California is fairly far from the industrialized East Coast, or is it due to something else?

Yankee are short-range POPs, so it may very well be that California is too distant for East Coast migration (it also would explain why so little migration happens to the Plains states in part).

Best to create a capi POP in California and start industrialization there.

Ah ok, that makes sense. I wasn't aware that Yankees were a short range culture.

I know that POPs from California were able to settle in Texas, so they're able to go at least that far, but do you think Midwestern states like Missouri, Ohio, and Illinois are all too distant?

That said, would POPs that migrate from California to Texas then be able to migrate to Missouri or Illinois, and maybe Ohio (if it's close enough)?

Distance is measured in number of provinces.

So you can get from CA to TX in as few as 4 or 5 provinces. However with the greater density of provinces moving eastward, it probably is more than the limit to get much further than Texas

I see. Is there anywhere in the game files where I could see what the province limit is?

I've never really been that successful with cross-country migration with the USA. A few states, yes, but from the West to East coasts, no. Just try and draw more immigration from foreign countries. Also, you could conquer a few provinces in China, and with full citizenship convert them to craftsmen so they migrate to the US.
