So mid-game in Stellaris I will have an issue where my system will crash. I don't freeze or get a BSD, I crash hard. My screen goes black, music turns off, system fans max, and the power button doesn't work. The only way to shut down is to unplug the power supply or flip the switch. I'm running at 3950x, 32GB Ram, 2070S. I also have used the -opengl launch option to no effect. I don't have any issues with games like Fallout 4/76, CS:GO, or CIV6. I played CIV6 for five hours yesterday but when I booted into Stellaris today to resume my latest game, It crashed within 5 minutes. I have also done a 30minute stress test on Prime95 and 10 minute Cinebench R20 loop with no issues. I have deactivated all mods and reinstalled the game prior to this latest crash.

Any help would be much appreciated it.

That sounds very much like overheating. Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 10 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install
SPEEDFAN http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php


And DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

If that is his cause I doubt it'll prove to be mine - mine isn't time based at all. Starting a game I can play for hours, but if I load up my latest game, I'll be crashing within probably 5 minutes.

As a follow up. I ran the game in Observer mode at 2325 and it crashed. Had it in windowed mode with MSI Afterburner and Ryzen Master running. My GPU was at 32 and my CPU at 59 (I had booted into the game at 2325 in order to replicate the crash).

You are running the game in openGL mode - why is that please? That's usually only used as a diagnostic measure, not for permanent use.

Do you still get these issues in regular DirectX mode?

I was running it in OpenGL based on recommendations from both Steam forums and Reddit for similar issues. My system was crashing before I switched to OpenGL and still crashes when I switched back to DirectX.

That's an odd recommendation as openGL is slower and less stable than DirectX for these games!

Anyway can i get new files taken after another crash under DirectX, thanks.

People run with the strangest things sometimes, I just didn't know any better. The files are attached. These files are from a game where I started fresh with mid game set to 2400 and Endgame set to 2600. It crashed in 2383.

I know, that's fine! I just meant it was odd for people to recommend to you a setting which is less stable to fix a stability problem :D

but no crashes recorded in the game itself. That tends to point somewhere outside the game. I am surprised that it is not temperatures! You might check for updates to that Razer driver though.

In the Windows Event Viewer are there entries that correspond with these crashes? Aside from LiveKernelEvents which we expect whenever there's a hard restart like that.

Has this problem happened ever since you've had this game, or only since what change or update? I assume it does not happen with CK2?

I don't think the wider community knows its less stable. lol.

I use watercooling for the CPU and my GPU is blower style. I can disable the Razer Audio.

That said, I pulled my power limits back on my Motherboard (disabled Precision Boost Overdrive for my AMD processor) and that seems to have fixed it. I had one crash yesterday after but no crashes today. got to 2371 in a mid-game 2300 play through before getting steamrolled by Marauders.

Wouldn't know on CK2, I don't enjoy the layered fuedalism. I just don't play much.
