Then what do you call the areas in the former county of london?

Inner London?

I don't think many people around today know or care about the former County of London...

So, there is the City of London, which is inside Inner London, which is inside Greater London, but any of those can be called "London" if you feel like?

London is just the general conurbation around the river Thames. People outside local government don't really care about administrative divisions.

The City of London is always referred to as the City, never as London.

There is one London: London Town. The other "Londons" that you are confused about are just administrative divisions that have changed over time. I don't get your problem.

Now I went down to London Town,
To have some fun on the Underground.
The ladies turned their heads around
Saying, "Donald, where are your trousers?"

Let the wind blow high, let the wind blow low,
Through the streets in my kilt I'll go.
All the lassies say, "Hello!
"Donald, where's your trousers?"

Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner, that I love London so
Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner, that I think of her wherever I go
I get a funny feeling inside of me, just walking up and down
Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner, that I love London Town :D

It's when I learned that Middlesex County and London County existed at the same time that I lost my mind.

Ugh... I know. It was even worse for me after I read this sentence on the City of London entry in wikipedia: "About 1130, Henry I granted a sheriff to the people of London, along with control of the county of Middlesex: this meant that the two entities were regarded as one administratively (not that the county was a dependency of the City) until the Local Government Act 1888."

I'm sorry, but if the City/Corporation/County of London was given control of Middlesex County how was Middlesex County not a dependency/vassal? If you are able to appoint the sheriff who enforces laws and collects taxes and such, how are you not the overlord of that county?
